Gaming PlayStation 5

Bit racist innit.
What having African people...in Africa?. Nah I'm a big fan of Chris Redfield, feel like it's so different from the rest that doesn't have the same formula that all the usual RE campaigns have. Like New location, Sewer and Lab in the others. Other than the new trilogy with Ethan.

I just got my 50th Platinum playing Resident Evil Requiem. Brilliant game. Prop either my 3rd or 4th favourite of the series. RE:5, 4 and then 2.
Original RE2, RE1 and RE4 in that order for me. The latest RE game just arrived. Gonna start it tonight, let's see if it can break into my top three.

I’m one of those weirdos that loved RE code Veronica and it’s a shame that I can’t platinum it because of the differences between UK and American versions of the game.

I also have fond memories of Code Veronica.

I thought CV was universally loved? What stops you getting the plat?

What was the Resident Evil game where it gave you scenarios and you had to survive them? Like I vaguely remember one where it was in a diner and you could pick which person there to play as, like the police officer, waitress, etc… and it would play out differently each time. Had co-op as well which was sick. Unless I’m misremembering.

Think that was Outbreak 1 and 2

It was loved on its original Dreamcast release but then players who joined the series at 4 went back and found it very rough. Also certain sections/dialogue have admittedly not aged well.

The UK/EU version runs so much slower than the US version meaning the time-limit related trophies are almost impossible.

Wasn’t CV meant to be 3 but Sony had exclusive rights to the numbered series and so CV was deemed a spin off?
Sort of, it wasn't just the rights issue because it was timed more than anything, they also got cold feet on the style change. So 3 became what was originally supposed to be a spin off (early form of DLC you could say) for 2. Which is why it's so similar, but short.

Same reason 4 actually has various versions of the game and what was released was a kind of "best of" of all the half finished earlier versions.

I still have my US Dreamcast and modified Snes (I built a switch onto it to flip, because the innards were the same rather than cope with our tv system they just restricted it) because of the age old 50hz issue. Mario Kart and Star Fox at 60hz was hilarious with my mates who were used to 50  What a time to be alive!

Handheld is supposedly going to release next year alongside the PS6.

That would be pretty daft wouldn't it? Realise a £1000 new PS6 console and then get the same fan base to splash out on a £600 - £700 handheld.

Besides no dev kits for PS6 have gone out to game developers (according to EDGE magazine) so I wouldn't put any credence in a PS6 being released next year. Also you don't release a new console you can't play GTA6 on immediately. That's madness. Also with GTA6 coming out at end of year, that's a console seller in itself and that will shift PS5's by the bucket load. You'd want to maximise those sales for at least 18 months. Then get a upscaled version for the new PS6 to get even more sales.

PS4 came out a month after GTA 5 and the PS4 version a year later.

They apparently can’t delay it because the contracts have been signed and delaying it would cost them money. They will most likely release it at a super premium price, and probably make sure this time that they don’t need to keep upping the price later. Sony released the PS5 during one of the toughest periods in the last century, I don’t think they care about the RAM crisis. They will just add that tax to the customers.

Developers don’t need dev kits to start making games for the PS6. They can start on a PC and then scale back according to the specs. PS5 dev kits went out in 2019, but the development for those games started way before that. Edge magazine is pretty much clueless these days.

Just started Cairn.

Climbing game where you move each limb at a time and have to manage resources as you go up this enormous mountain. Looks beautiful and the atmosphere is so calming. I’ve fallen off a couple times so far but not died yet. Requires a lot of patience!

Yep, I played the Cairn demo and it requires a fair amount of patience. I'm not sure I'll buy the full game, I'm not sure I can give it the time it clearly requires, but the visual design is right up my street.
Always more willing to give games like this a try based on its refreshing design mechanics and its look.

The OG remake on the Gamecube is still the masterclass in how it should be done. Absolutely no need for them to redo it in the newer action style.
One of my favourite GameCube memories was playing through the Resi remake. I have memories of popping home from school during a lunch break and playing a few minutes of that, which sets up the scene of it being in the middle of the day because I was a total wuss and playing that game at night made me shit my pants. I was in that corridor just off the dining room on the first floor, where you first encounter one of the dead for the first time. In that corridor, I swore I could hear some sort of thumping sound. I couldn't tell if it was a washing machine going in our kitchen on the other side of the house, or if it was in the actual game. So, I stood still and just waited. The thumping sound got louder. Then, I realised it wasn't thumping, but running, and it was the first time I ever came across a crimson head as it fecking obliterated me. I remember screaming wtf, getting the 'You Are Dead' screen, and then promptly turning the game off. Didn't touch it again in days.

What a game. It was my first experience of the series and it's a brilliant introduction. Thought it looked wonderful. We were spoiled having that and Eternal Darkness in such a short space of time.

Speaking of resi, I don't feel the soundtrack gets enough love.

The save area track from #4 has this melancholy, haunting quality that is pitch perfect for setting up the atmosphere:

Almost at the end of Res Evil Requiem. In a nutshell, two different games put together as a single campaign. The first person view with Grace in the sanctaorium is the highlight of the game. It's like Capcom didn't have the strength of conviction to release a shorter game ala Amnesia The Bunker. The tension is there throughout her campaign.

There's stuff introduced in Graces campaign that isn't used at all in Leon's. It's bizarre. Leon's campaign is the RE 4-5-6 heavy on action, bullets and guns. A complete contrast to Grace's campaign. Thing is games like Days Gone have done some of this action stuff better.

There a certain beige-ness to the levels Leon's in and it misses splashes of colour. I get the effect they were going with but it's drab.

It's a 7.5 for me as a game.

Anyway we have Scottish fishing village first person perspective Silent Hill out later this year.

DLC

Got the platinum for ‘The Council’ -one of those old telltale like games. These games are sort of a guilty pleasure of mine in that we all know the gameplay isn’t great and we don’t have as much choice as we think we do but they can still be fun. Wonder what the best regarded game of this type is? I imagine Walking dead series 1 would be a lot of people’s favourite.

Starfield out on PS5 today with the Free Lanes update. The new DLC is optional extra if you get the base edition of the game. Apparently the reviews are good so far.

It's a 150gb download with the DLC story packs.

Edit: Premium edition physical copy is sold out everywhere, so for once I've gone down the digital only route. Premium edition. This should keep me busy for awhile.

Warhammer Rouge Trader will have to wait now. Got that in sale last night.

The lack of an open world map really kills my enthusiasm for Starfield. That’s the best thing about Bethesda games.

Still doesn't do what it should have, and they openly teased from the start.

I'll try it again one day, but like Cyberpunk (and Bioshock:Infinite if we go back) it stings just how much they cut/fecked up and what could have been.

Cyberpunk has been massively improved since launch. I haven't played the last 10 hour long DLC they released but it's a very good game now.

Personally really enjoyed Bioshock Infinite as well.

They have added maps into it, in one of the updates.
Sorry I don’t mean a map to see locations of stuff, I mean the single sprawling open world of Skyrim, Fallout, etc. As I understand it all the locations are chopped up and separated by travel via menus.

Then when you do get to a planet, it's single cities are tiny with the rest of the world procedurally generated with what becomes a very familiar set of assets.

Ugh, Starfield was the biggest disappointment by far for me in the last couple of years. Bland stuff. Do they have mods on the PS allowed nowadays at least?

Starfield doesn't hold your hand does it?

First gun fight and I didn't even know the controls or how to crouch.

5 mins later I'm in a spaceship. Here is some of the basics. Ok, abit overwhelmed. "Enemy ship has located you and is firing". Right.....

Wtf?!?

Survived that. Two more ships turn up. Sigh. I still don't understand the hud of the screen of my spaceship nevermind the controls....

Finished Cairn. Really enjoyed it.

Tough at times and climbing the Peril section was brutal but it feels so rewarding at the same time when you make progress. Made it to the top in 21 days with 13 deaths which I think is decent.
