Portugal Discussion | Roberto Martinez resigns

Thanks for the excellent feedback. I'll look at Roger when I get the chance. I won't bother you with follow up questions if you're pretty dormant on here, but I'd hope for your sake that you get in a new manager for the national side. Such a shame if this amazing squad does not realise its potential.
No problem at all.

So he will be in charge for the World Cup then.

Part of the reason why I was rooting for Portugal tonight. They have a really scary roster and hopefully he'll ruin them like he did Belgium.

Your team is too good for you to be hoping for other team's downfall like that.

The staggeringly arrogant incompetence to shift Joao Neves to right back when he's literally one of the best midfielders in Europe just to accommodate Bernardo and Bruno in midfield was mind boggling.

Martinez is a fecking terrible manager and has been for years - and in addition to that, until Ronaldo is put out to pasture this team won't win anything of consequence. It's beyond obvious that he's a colossal liability at this point.

Not really, we're really unbalanced. Dont want to derail the thread with France talk, our attack and center defence are loaded but we lack midfielders and fullbacks. And as we all know Deschamps is a decent coach but not a great one. Midfield is too important and Portugal and Spain have the best midfields in Europe and they're more balanced overall.

Yeah, agree with that. I would drop Silva from the first XI. He's not the player he was, while Bruno has actually improved this season. The only thing I think they lack is some more physicality. You could see how much Leao made a difference purely from a strength point of view, the Spaniards were bouncing off him. I'd like to see a beast centre back alongside Dias.

Aye. I'd rather all the teams are at their absolute top level and we have a true winner.

Ronaldo starts by merit. Hes still better than the likes of Gonçalo Ramos and Jota for Portugal. 8 goals in 9 games and topscorer in the nations league against the likes of Denmark, Germany, Spain, etc is no mean feat; especially at the ancient age of 40.

He really doesn't; the team is far far better without him. Ramos got through more defensive work in his first 5 minutes than Ronaldo did in the previous two games combined.

Agreed; Bernardo is clearly the second weakest link in the starting XI after Ronaldo. I was pulling my hair out when the second half starting and the change was moving Bernardo further forward where he was equally ineffective.

True indeed. Martinez is not a good coach, in addition to being a bit of a clown (singing the anthem, etc.). Whilst he and Ronaldo are there, Portugal will not mount a serious challenge for the World Cup, despite their talented squad. Anyone who thinks they will is kidding themselves.

The problem is that they've now won the Nations League again, so they'll sleepwalk into next year, with the same two guys at the helm, thinking that they've got a shot in the real thing. They haven't.

The staggeringly arrogant incompetence of a fecking terrible manager that just won Portugal the European Nations League? That puts Portugal on top of Europe at the moment?

Caution ahead, Football geniuses hard at work!

To be fair Ramos didn’t do much when he came in for Ronaldo, but Neves at Right back just so he can play Bernardo is criminal.

But he won, so he won’t be sacked.

I hate managers who complicate football. Could have easily lost the game in the first half with that rubbish set up he started with. Football is a simple game especially at international level. Put your best players in their best positions and let them play. That is why I fancy this Spain team.

These modern trend of managers picking midfielders to play at fullback and have them step into midfield in the build up disgusts me so much because you know what usually happens when it is time to defend in a back four but you have a midfielder up against a flying winger, or crosses coming in from the other wing and you have a midfielder defending the back post.

He wins trophies, that is what he does. Beat Germany and Spain, what do you want more
We beat them in spite of him, not because of him.

So sad that this golden generation has Martinez as a coach. The nations league win means he isn't going anywhere.

Mourinho would be by pick, feel like he would be the only guy capable of managing CR7s minutes without "upsetting" the harmony in the team. He defo wouldn't play Joao Neves at bloody RB.

Agree 100%. The same with Argentina, Scaloni did so well to select players who compliment each other well and just maximise everyone's ability.

Spain are on top of Europe at the moment, because they are the European champions.

Yeh. We all like to see managers that are rigid with their formations and players.

Surely in knock out football, it is just the result that matter?
Martinez won an FA cup with bloody Wigan, I'd never want him near my club for a league campaign but in knock outs he's proven decent. Belgium got 3rd, I get there was a load of chat about their golden generation but I'm not sure they will ever have the depth to compete with such a huge footballing country like Argentina (who underperformed so long people just revised their expectations of them, versus Belgium who overperformed and vice versa) or France who are just a powerhouse for talent production. Nations league is a bit of a random comp but Portugal beating Germany and Spain is also arguably punching above where they should be.

With Amorim and Bruno here, we need to be picking up the best Portuguese talent over the next few years.

Completely agree with this. It was bittersweet to win yesterday because our FA President already confirmed he's staying for the WC. It's fine winning the national team league cup but Martinez will seriously handicap our team for the WC. Winning a nations league won't change the fact that's he's a mediocre manager.

True.

He should just play Neves/Vitinha in midfield with Bruno.

Bernardo Silva is undroppable for Martinez even though he has always been subpar for our NT. He had a incredible career as a City player but for Portugal he never stood out or is a football reference.

Too bad they will have to play with 10 players during the WC and ultimately fail to challenge for it. They have amazing talents and players.

Yeah for sure, at this point he's just shoehorning him in. It made sense before because of his form at City, but I don't understand why now. Ruben Neves is another player that somehow keeps getting in.

Stepping down after this tournament. Who is in the running to replace him now that Jose is back at Real?

Jorge Mendes will probably just call the first name in his phone who isn't currently at Wolves and work something out.

Can't wait to see Cristiano try to shoot every ball in an attempt to match Messi. Feel bad for the Portugal team.

What job is Martinez the con artist going to bag next?

Already known he is in talks to join al nassr next, and CR7 is part owner there (15-25%).
Of course he would want to please cr7, big fat contract incoming from saudi arabia
