Portugal Discussion | Roberto Martinez resigns

Imagine if he somehow pipped Zidane to the France gig, would be the biggest head scratcher of all time.
He wouldn't even get it before Luca Zidane. I can see him doing a world tour of smaller nations to fill his bank account.

Because he's slow as feck now and can't maintain even his slow terrible speed for more than 20ish meters now.

Running from here:

Is completely different from running from the centre circle as in the example you showed previously:

Ronaldo has routinely been caught when put through because he doesn't have the pace anymore - and that's why this situation you cited earlier is not actually a threatening one in any way, shape, or form:

Are you even looking at what you’re posting? The pass against Uzbekistan had him start from behind the defender and over take him as the ball was played.

The one against Spain would have had him have a head start. Yeah he’s nowhere near as fast as he used to be but you’re exaggerating a bit here.

Also, you’re essentially making excuses again for the other players. You’re now implying they don’t play it in open space because they already have it in their mind that he won’t make it to the ball. When in reality they don’t even look for the pass.

Come one. He's a net negative to the team and shouldn't be in the starting line-up.

Yeah I can agree he shouldn’t be starting every game and even was impressed that Martinez could take him off against Croatia. I just find the posters saying he’s “the root of all of portugal’s problems” very illogical.

It has to do with distances he has to run, silly. Against Uzbekistan (lol) he's 25 meters closer to the goal and can sustain the burst. The runs against Colombia and Spain didn't/wouldn't go anywhere because he can't run fast over long distances.

He had a huge head start vs Colombia and was caught up very easily.

It's not "making excuses for other players", it's correctly pointing out that they are having to slavishly cater to the whims of a has-been who doesn't contribute to the team at all beyond taking shots and complaining when he doesn't get the ball.

He is the root of all their problems because he is a black hole of possession (zero chances created for teammates and 99 total passes despite playing ~480 minutes), is a liability defensively, doesn't stretch defenses, and insists on occupying the same space as Portugal's actual best attacker. And on top of it, he acts like a petulant child when his teammates have the audacity to take shots of their own or to pass it elsewhere - and very very obviously takes no accountability for his failings.

Portugal's chances to win this tournament went in the shitter when Ronaldo's suspension was overturned. Shame really

Yeah, pretty much. I’d be fuming if I was Bruno. Just won POTY and broken the assist record in the toughest league in the world; the attack should be built around him.

Instead, the team is setup to get a 41yo to score despite said 41yo clearly having been well beyond his best, and the level required, when he was 37 at the last World Cup.

Bruno is 31. Might’ve been his last chance too, ditto players like Dias and Bernado Silva. Their chances all burnt on the altar of Ronaldo’s ego.

They probably do need a manager to come in and do what Tuchel’s done and make some difficult decisions on certain players.

They have some players that seem perfect for a transition team and others that just seem like they’d be right at home in that Spanish side (endless passing).

Obviously...? But they were better going forward once Ronaldo was off, which is what we're talking about.
Doesn't matter. They were literally much worse a unit. Should have been at least 4 down by the end of that half yet its not like they blew Croatia away. So the 'better with CR7 off" narrative is grossly over exaggerated.

Erm, not to be rude but I'm not sure your recollection of the match is correct here. Ronaldo only came off in the 82nd minute and the point is Portugal were immediately better.

All of the chances you're thinking about were ironically right before Ronaldo went off.

feck Roberto Martinez and his resignation. Too little too late

Don't think he had to resign. He had already mentioned at the start of the WC that this was end of his contract with Portugal and he wasn't planning to stay beyond the WC

An absolutely useless football manager who squandered an embarrassment of riches in the past 10 years, first with Belgium and now with Portugal. If any other top 10 ranked nation even thinks about giving him a job, they'd be certifiably insane.

100%

Useless manager, how he's consistently landed these top jobs is beyond me. Thats got to be the end of him managing any decent teams now ...teams like Iran, Uzbekistan are his level.

He must be gutted that big Ange got the Al-Nassr job instead of him.

He won't be able to always play Ronaldo no matter what anymore.

I still remember the day this Wigan ex manager took over a prime Belgium team and I was wondering how the feck did he land the job. Needless to say I was shocked again to find that he was managing Portugal in this world cup.
Talk about failing upwards.

Maresca's successor at City perhaps? ;)

Him preferring to play Ronaldo over the team tells you everything. Maybe he is good at sucking up to the correct people inside the club/national team so that he lands the job.

This is a rehash of the myth from the last world cup. Where every detractors swore Ramos 'instantly improved Portugla". Then he started against Morocco and Portugal remained just as terrible. Just like last time the true disease lay else where

Yes because them smashing Switzerland 6-1 didn't happen?

The true disease is Ronaldo's influence on the team and the fact that everyone else has to defer to him to the point where they change how they play. He's a distraction and he's beyond washed at this point - there isn't a bigger gap between a player's reputation and output in the world

He makes me irrationaly angry.

He has spent 10 years making two great national teams completely underachieve and has presumably been paid very handsomly for it.

One of the worst things I’ve seen in football. It was like a jim’ll fix it. All those players whose chance to get to the semis was taken from them so 41 year old could play. He could hardly move from 20mins in. Horrific stuff.

That group of players should have won something. Why should you reward failure? I could have taken that Belgium team to their highest ever finish. They were orders of magnitude better than the '86 side that came 4th.

They never had the sort of squad that guarantees winning anything, few teams do.

They were stronger and deeper overall than the '80s teams, but that side had a great midfield/attacking mid line with Vercauteren (one of the best sidemidfielders and crossers/assists men of the decade), Scifo and the beast Cuelemans, which they exploited well. and better fullbacks like Gerets and Grun. A great keeper in Pfaff...they weren't orders of magnitude worse as a starting eleven (that would be some of the '90s/'00s teams), just not as deep.

No, you couldn't have taken them anywhere. It's unbecoming to compare yourself to a colossus like that.

You're calling Martinez a colossus? I've taken shits with more managerial ability than that man.

Just because you have a good group of players it doesn't mean you should automatically win something, in international tournaments there are so many variables. Plus i think the Belgium 'golden generation' is being hyped up much the like England one of the 00's.

Belgium's best team was probably 2018 WC who went out to the eventual winners who imo were the best team in the tournament. The 2014 and 2022 teams were decent but do not automatically scream world cup winners when compared to the quality of the other teams.

In the Euros they admittedly should have done better but were essentially knocked out by an all time wonder goal by a random Welsh player which just shows the unpredictability of these tournaments. Were they better than France , Portugal or Germany that tournament i wouldn't say so. In Euro 2020 they get knocked out by the eventual winners, but at this point their 'golden generation' players are older and not the same players.

On top of this, Belgium don't really have a strong pedigree of winning these tournaments, to expect them to suddenly turn this around is unrealistic.

Curious what the view of him is actually in Spain.

He was a middling player at Zaragoza in the mid 90s and left to go to Wigan when hardly any Spanish players went abroad to major leagues (although Wigan were well down the English pyramid at that point).

Made his name there and built his reputation enough to then get plum international jobs. Yet to best of my knowledge I can't remember any Spanish club side ever offering him a job. Could be wrong there. And not sure what Spanish public would think of him belting out the Portuguese anthem pre kick off.

He's the Spanish version of Graham Potter really. Worked very hard to get where he has due to no substantial playing career and had to go outside his homeland to do that but obviously not top tier as a manager. However Potter has had three good prem jobs now whereas Martinez seemingly not even on the radar of a Valencia or Sevilla unless those type of clubs can't afford him?

Martinez managed Belgium in 2018, 2021 and 2022. 2022 was a failure, the previous two not really.

I think people really see his Belgium stint a bit wrong, he wasn't there in 2016, which is the big failure tournament. They were knocked out by Wales of all sides.

Regardless, what he's done in Portugal is ridiculous, small man management. He spent his whole Portugal stint pampering Ronaldo.

Jorge Jesus looks exactly like a guy that might persist with Ronaldo.

Ex Al-Nassr coach too. CR7 ain't retiring anytime soon

The only hope is he might play more positive football compared to the shower of shit Martinez had us playing.

He took Belgium to their highest ever World Cup place. They should build a statue of him in Brussels.
You joke but that was a genuinely amazing result. Beat Brazil on the way

Seriously Belgium's golden generation got massively overhyped. It was great, but it wasn't better than losing a tight match to France in a WC SF

And that was the only tournament Martinez got with the golden generation. After that Hazard was a ghost, De Bruyne was injured, Nainngolan gone, Witsel and Fellaini old, Kompany, Alderweireld and Vertonghen old, etc

Qatar was terrible to be sure, but it's also hardly his fault if Lukaku manages to miss 5 open goal tap ins...

I don't rate him at all, but I hardly think he was bad with Belgium

With Portugal they won a nations league. Which they apparently care about. Euros weren't very good but they went out to France on penalties. Not winning their group here was a failure and you can make up your own mind about playing Cristiano no matter what, though I strongly suspect the FA had a big hand in that...

The style of play with Portugal was disastrous, and we know why that style was chosen. They should have won more games this WC and gotten the better side of the draw.
