Portugal Discussion | Roberto Martinez resigns

The style of play with Portugal was disastrous, and we know why that style was chosen. They should have won more games this WC and gotten the better side of the draw.
Yeah, I agree with that. They really should have won their group

It’s shame Portugal didn’t go further. The depth and quality of squad they have is enviable, but obviously they were never going to achieve a lot given the system played was as much about accommodating Ronaldo than anything else. They may as well have had Roy Hodgeson managing them with Martinez in charge, another poor error of judgement on the Portuguese FA’s behalf.

Even they had to accomodate Ronaldo they could have done it better.

Problem was their wide players being inconsistent mainly. If they had better there Ronaldo was less of a issue.

You joke but that was a genuinely amazing result. Beat Brazil on the way

Seriously Belgium's golden generation got massively overhyped. It was great, but it wasn't better than losing a tight match to France in a WC SF

And that was the only tournament Martinez got with the golden generation. After that Hazard was a ghost, De Bruyne was injured, Nainngolan gone, Witsel and Fellaini old, Kompany, Alderweireld and Vertonghen old, etc

Qatar was terrible to be sure, but it's also hardly his fault if Lukaku manages to miss 5 open goal tap ins...

I don't rate him at all, but I hardly think he was bad with Belgium

With Portugal they won a nations league. Which they apparently care about. Euros weren't very good but they went out to France on penalties. Not winning their group here was a failure and you can make up your own mind about playing Cristiano no matter what, though I strongly suspect the FA had a big hand in that...

Only half-joking. I agree with you on his time with Belgium.

Who said it didn't happen?. What happened against Morocco when the stakes were actual with a semi final chance? How many did Portugal score with Ramos started upfront?

Switzerland game was 1/8 round of the world cup, the same round they exited this year. Is this some sort of a dead rubber with zero importance? He still scored three goals and they won resoundingly.

This Ramos hate is absolutely crazy, I am feeling bored so I added up the stats:

Ronaldo over the course of last three major tournaments: 1217 minutes, four goals of which two were PKs.

Ramos over the course of last three major tournaments: 214 minutes, four goals.

As they say, the numbers speak for themselves.

Jorge Jesus has been confirmed, contract until 2030.

Considering he's scored 4 times as many knockout goals than Ronaldo and literally infinitely more non-penalty knockout goals, it sounds like he's the better option - as long as we're continuing to draw conclusions from small sample sizes

Good choice. Now if Ronaldo would be a bench option, they would be my favourites with France for 2028

Dear god no, it’s time to cut the cord once and for all. Ramos should be the starting striker for Euro 2028 as he at least knows how to play with that midfield, and then hope they develop a better striker over the next 4 years for WC 2030. Only place Ronaldo should be is watching from the stands.

He'll be watching from the 18 yard line.

Considering all the super talents that Portugal have produced over the years, it’s quite amazing that there’s not one striker exactly in that bracket. Pauleta and Nuno Gomes were as far as I could remember and they aren’t exactly elite but reliable

This is mathematically incorrect by the way

Hugo Almeida!

Ronaldo has never scored a non-penalty knockout goal. 4 divided by 0 is impossible; mathematically the simplest way to evaluate it is that it approaches infinity (albeit without actually getting there; perhaps I was too liberal with the use of "literally")

That's....wrong. The way you're going about it

Ramos has scored a finite number of non-penalty KO goals. That number is 4.

4 is literally 4 more than zero

Ramos has not scored infinitely more non-penalty goals. He has scored 4 more non-penalty goals

Fair enough. I should have said literally infinity times as many non-penalty knockout goals

Or they could focus on developing the best team and move on from the guy who will be 43 at the next major tournament

That's still nonsense. Even if technically correct(which it still isn't. 0*4 is 0, not infinity). It's just a nonsenical way to frame it

Came for some Portugal bashing, stayed for the mathematics education

The system was played to accomodate Ronaldo. The system wouldn't accomodate anyone. Just negative, nothing football. Starting Ronaldo obv is the wrong option. But if you start him, atleast play to his strengths?

How many crosses were sent into the box when we weren't chasing the games? Any manager with a brain sees the mismatch in Ronaldo and Cubarsi in the box. Try to exploit that.

Don't really have much hope with Jorge Jesus either. But anyone would do better with this team than the bald fraud.

Well you can't just reverse the equation to say 0*4=0 because you've broken the law of inverse operations, since you can't calculate 4 divided by 0.

The better way to think about it is asymptotically - as the contributions of Ronaldo to goal scoring go from 1 penalty goal to 0 non-penalty goals, that number becomes so small that it has to be multiplied by an infinitely large number to get back to 4. This then also allows for the inverse operation to be true.

Good appointment. As long as Ronaldo has retired from international football, they have a good chance of winning the euros in 2028
Jesus says he's still counting on Ronaldo, so unless the later decides to retire we will probably still seem him wearing our shirt a few more times.

 Forget Martinez running Portugal's golden generation, Ronaldo is doing that.

Ramos should just retire from international football, what's the point?

....This Ramos hate is absolutely crazy, ...
Ramos Hate? What on earth are you on about? No one "hates Ramos". I just don't buy this messiah narrative being built around him. Portugal with the way they were set up and performing in midfield in this world cup and on the wings were still going to be shit with him or CR7 starting, period! What I don't understand is why folks insist on making it about "who starts upfront". Yet the striker department (CR7 + Ramos) both at this world cup and the last one did its job over the course of their tournament games! Being knocked out both times because other departments fell short.

I find it truly laughable folks actually believe a striker who relies on supply like Ramos does would magically have caused Vitinha and Bruno Fermandes to remember they can actually pass the ball forward and switch play quickly. Or make Neto stop running into blind alleys and crossing consistently away from the man he was aiming for. Yet he'd have actually been more frustrated than 40 year old CR7 because he can ACTUALLY get on most things.

Worst of the lot was Martinez. He insisted on starting the under performing trio of Vitinha, Bruno and Neto yet he had the talent and options to replace all 3. Insisted on hardly giving Ramos enough minutes. Insisted on a setting up with 40 year old leading the line withh no runners getting beyond him. But people would rather just blame CR7 for the exit or pretend Ramos is a god.

Has Ronaldo actually confirmed he's retiring?

I'm not being funny, I really see him being in the next WC squad. I don't think he should be but I'm just saying!

Better option to do what? Play with a midfield supplying zero bullets and a dead right flank? Or you imagine he'd morph into Eusebio and run that game for them when the midfield is under performing?

The way you talk one would believe for the last 3 years of international football Ramos has had no minutes played. When his elder team mate has been the sides's top scorer.

No, but he said this was his last World Cup and that he would make a decision with his family to retire from the NT now or not.

The better option if Portugal want to play as a coherent team, obviously, and not setup to constantly try and assist the grandad upfront

Better option to do literally anything than the corpse of Ronaldo?

The midfield supplying zero bullets couldn't really do so when Ronaldo lives offside because he's not fit for purpose anymore. You keep going on as if the midfield underperformance isn't directly tied to them playing 10 v 11 in buildup and defensive phases. When was the last time you critiqued the midfield of a team for not being creative enough after a red card? It's completely disingenuous to blame the midfield when they are effectively playing down a man.

Also huge congratulations to Ronaldo for scoring against the likes of Armenia and Hungary. Pity he flopped at the Euros in 2024 though

Yawn.
The so called corpse has been their too scorer in competitive matches over that last 3 years of international games.

Idiotic excuses. I bet you are a Messi fanboi.

I 'go on" Because it isn't. They do not need the striker in build up of moves. No one ever has as long as the sport has existed. They do not need him in defensive phases either. How this idiotic myth that you need 11 men to defem
nds persist is beyond the pale. Argentina literally won a world cup defending with 10. And are possibly set for a another semi final with the exact same set up.

Look forward to people whinging about him for another year or 2.
