Roma looked like dross from the start, no idea how we managed to fall behind, some really good performances from Bruno, Pogba and Cavani, no idea how Mctominay wasn’t subbed off or why Rashford wasn’t taken off earlier but Roma was so woeful it didn’t matter.
They had two decent attacking moves all game and somehow came away with two goals.

But yeah, they were pretty rubbish. Credit to the lads as they really stepped it up in the second half, but the football that Roma produced has no place in a European semi final

Get in United!!!!

Still buzzing this morning. What a terrific game that was, and what a performance - I gave Cavani my MOTM, but it could easily have been Pogba or even Bruno. Sensational football at times.

Thought we started the match really well, too, and that first goal was just top drawer. The strength and skill from Pogba, the vision from Cavani and the movement of Bruno. Top class. We were all over them at that point, up until the dodgy penalty. I say dodgy knowing that the rules suggest it ought to be given, but personally I'll always believe the rule is wrong; the only way to avoid that is not to slide in, which defeats the purpose of the sport.

Was horrible to watch us lose our heads after that decision, and it reminded me of Nani against Madrid all those years ago - kept thinking we're gonna succumb to another iffy decision. Thankfully, this time around, we lost our way before half time and were able to use the break to collect ourselves. Even at 1-2, I felt we would score more if we started the second half the way we did the first. Didn't think we'd score six, but in the end we could have had seven or eight!

There were some weak points - Fred and McTominay didn't have their best games, Rashford struggled on the right and De Gea's distribution with his feet was poor - but overall it was a tremendous comeback and, though I don't want to jinx it, I'm absolutely chuffed to see this squad and this manager get a crack at a final.

Couldnt agree more with this post.

How on earth we conceded two goals is baffling - I admit I had a feeling of dread when we went behind.

The penalty was is what it is - it's a penalty in todays game. We'd be screaming for one if it was the other way round. Pogba was unlucky, but when you lunge last ditch it's always a bit risky.

Our penalty was also a little bit of it is what it is. Heard people calling it never a pen etc but it's one of them - you make the tackle you run the risk.

Weak points are also bang on. Fred and McTominey are never going to be a perfect pair - best we can hope from them is "decent". When the other option is Matic or a defensively naive Pogba - it's probably the best we can do until new signings are made. I'd personally give Donny a run of games now Pogba seems to be playing further up - but it doesnt seem to be happening. Rashford is always a bit inconsistent - but he's worse off the right hand side. Gives us a dilemma playing Pogba LW, rashfords best position. But it's better to have dilemma's than not. Pogba looks a better player off LW then CM to be fair

Comes to something when the biggest negative from the game is we didnt score more, especially seeing as we banged 6 in. Cracking result. The semi curse is well and truly broken .

Cavani showed real quality - what a player.

Roma have lost one game out of the previous 6 EL matches, beating out Ajax in the quarter final.

One again we make a good cup team look like Rochester.

Roma were abysmal! Unbelievable to see such a decline of one of the Italian giants. They'd struggle to stay up if they were in the PL.
However not taking the credit away from our lads. Feck the 1st half. Just a blip. It happens!
So many players stood up: Bruno motm by a pinch. Although Shaw at present is at world class level. He's so direct in everything he does. The way him and Pogba teamed up on that right flank was a beauty to watch.
Fantastic performance!

Obviously a fantastic second half and I did say within a few minutes of the start that if we got the ball to Cavani in the area he'd punish them (although of course some Captain Hindsights like to highlight other things I said).

But that 45 minutes doesn't negate the fact that in the first half, yet again, we were awful. No pace, no tempo, almost looking disinterested, no width, very little movement off the ball except for Cavani, and giving the ball away constantly. And yes, Ole must take some of the blame - it happens too often and he very rarely changes things when it does and certainly doesn't drop those responsible. Worse still is the continual playing players out of position.

This summer is huge for the team and the manager, if you ask me. If he fails to address the problems (and I include failing to get backing from the suits above him), we are going nowhere. People can keep telling me he's doing a great job - to which I answer: this is Manchester United. Going out of the CL at the group stage is not acceptable, losing at home to the likes of a terrible Sheffield United is not acceptable. Don't forget that the Europa is the League Cup of the European competitions, not the FA Cup. I keep hearing he know the DNA of the club - now he needs to prove that.

Given all that, no one can deny that the comeback (admittedly against a very poor team) was brilliant and enthralling. Credit to pretty much everyone but Cavani has shown just how much Rashford and Martial are not centre forwards and we need one who pretty much guarantees 20+ league goals a season.

One criticism I don't agree with is those saying DDG should have saved the penalty. I prefer Hendo in goal but if David had kept that out, it would have been an outstanding stop.

I do feel AWB is caught out of position far too often and, for me, that's why he isn't going to be playing for England any time soon (permanently) and his ability to make last-ditch tackles won't always save him. I really want Fred to do well but I think his time might be up. I'd keep Scott ahead of him because he does make more important tackles and with the right coaching could become a very good (maybe not great) DM.

I feel Pogba is beginning to string good performances together, rather than just now and then - and, again, disagree with those blaming him for the hand ball. What happened to the rule that said if the ball bounces up off your body on to the hand that it is not handball? That said, doe he want to stay? I'm finding it hard to tell. Some of his passes were almost as good as Lindelof's for Rashford's goal against Granada (joking).

Bruno's passing was (mostly) excellent, Luke Shaw had another really good game but Edison was MoM for me - and not just because of the goals.

We have to presume we've done enough to go through, although they did pull that surprise against (was it) Barca not long ago. I really hope we play Villareal in the final, simply because I hate finals with two clubs from the same country - and is why I'd scrap the rule that they can't be in the same leagues earlier in competitions

Great evening, thanks for that lads.

That being said no reason to get carried away. Roma was probably shocked how the hell they turned up 2 times in our half in the first 45 minutes and scored 2 goals. They looked like a very average side, one has to wonder how they managed to reach the semi final.
And they were quite unlucky with the injuries.

We were too slow again in the first half, the passing sloppy. And our defense plus McFred is just not good enough to warrant 2 places in the starting 11.

But yeah, let's get the pot and hopefully build from there in the summer.

You s**t Man Utd should have lost 5-0. Over hyped and over marketed EPL and Man Utd. Over hyped and over marketed EPL and Man Utd. Over hyped and over marketed EPL and Man Utd. I can't believe you believe the s**t they sell you. HAHAHAHA Serie A is the best league in the world. The EPL is a beer league. If you like watching drunken fools run around with no purpose - the long-ball along with kick-and-run football - then you watch the EPL. If you want to watch quality players use there minds and technical skills to beat their opponents then you watch Serie A. You English fans are stupid alcoholics - you just don't any better. It's mindless entertainment - the lowest form of football. English mothers drink when they carry their children and as result you all have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome - all retards. The classic argument that you use is that the EPL is the most entertaining. Watching little kids play football is also entertaining, but it doesn't mean it's the best. Most of the best players from countries that actually have good players play in Serie A. This includes countries that actually win at international competitions such as Italy, Brazil, and Argentina (not overrated countries that never win eg. England and Spain - you guys are s**t). This is because the South Americans along with everyone else in the world hate Anglo-Saxons - the people are miserable, the country stinks, the weather is terrible, the food is a disgrace, you have no culture, and the EPL is horrific. Italy World Cups-4 vs. England-1 (fixed). Italy Euro Championships-1 vs. England-0. Italy Under 21 Euro Championships-5 vs. England-0. Total Italy-10 vs. England -1(fixed). England is s**t in more ways than one. Spain's record is even worse. The numbers speak for themselves. Serie A has dominated for 50 years, and now that people are starting to pay attention to that sh** football played on that miserable foggy rock you call England you think you're the best. Finally, if want a measure of the quality of European leagues league then look at the Champions League statistics. Once again, the numbers speak for themselves - Italian teams have been in the final 24 times and English teams have been it 13 times. THE NUMBERS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES - YOU GUYS ARE S**T! Italy is the king of FOOTBALL, fashion, art, culture, history, design and architecture, cars, motorcycles, food, wine, luxury items, opera, ballet, etc. Italy has La Dolce Vita. England has the S**t Life. England is the king of nothing - GARBAGE DIRTY PEOPLE. I'VE BEEN IN YOUR HOMES. I know some stupid English person is going to comeback with argument about violence and corruption in Serie A, but don't be so naïve - take it from me - it happens in all leagues, including the EPL. Why do think your keepers are so bad - they take bribes from gangs and officials. HAHAHAHAHA (P.S. get used to this one because I'll cut and paste it until every member of your garbage race sees it).

please note this is a copypasta from 2007
i know this is tongue in cheek but this seems to be a sentiment still in many Italian football forums i chance to visit. I don't get what Man Utd at least has done to be hated so much, just the commercialism can't be it surely?

Getting back to the match i know everyone is saying that the first half wasn't good but that first goal is exactly the kind of football and type of goal that in my mind people complain that we don't score enough. It was that good.

Must admit at half time I was yelling at the TV and agreeing wholeheartedly with Scholsey and Hargreaves, why was Rashford wide out right, why Fred and McTominay together Fred were having another nightmare moment when he let the Roma player run off him for the second goal?
Was Ole yet again making a miscalculation in a cup semi with his line up, and on top of that my wife was telling me to shut up, it was only half time.
Second half, the sun came out (not literally), the goals went in, Gods in his heaven all is right with the world. Ole's men shut me (Scholsey and Hargreaves) up...so did the wife!

Great win lads!

Attacking football. Exhilarating, sensational genuine attacking football. Even in the first half, when we weren’t great by any stretch of the imagination, we probed and dominated, and did not deserve to be losing. They sat back, had 32% possession and scored from their two chances. Our attackers were still fine, while our defenders (bar Shaw) were shaky.

In the second half though, we played our best game since Fergie retired. Not a single team in the world could have bettered that second half performance in the semi final of a European competition. We absolutely dominated them and probably should have scored more than 6, considering the amount of times we cut right through their defence. In the second half alone, we had a 3.19 XG to their 0.13. We monopolised the ball and played some brilliant, fast and fluid stuff. Pogba, Bruno and Cavani played 10/10 games and are truly 3 world class players. If we manage to tie down the former and the latter this summer alongside 3 new signings (CB, DM and RW), I’m convinced we’ll win the league next season.

On to Pool now. Need to beat them more considering the game is at OT. I love Maguire, but he wasn’t great last night, particularly in the first half. Pool have three mobile forwards, so it could be a blessing in disguise that Harry will miss the game as he thrives against the more physical strikers (didn’t against Dzeko, but he’s been so good this season that it wouldn’t be fair to slate him). Bailly is the type of defender who if he plays well, can help to shut down the Pool front three.

Best performance of the season so far. Against Pool, I want to see us attack them and dominate again. Be careful and play McFred by all means, but Ole needs to stick with the same tactics he used tonight. Full credit to Ole too, who set us up to attack and press high, and managed to get a result in a European semi final that none of Moyes, LvG or Mourinho would have got.

The outcry at half time was over the top imo. Yes that's easy to say in hindsight but I can't think of any managers that make multiple subs and system change at half time when 2-1 down in a close game.

Considering Ole's United have a brilliant record of coming from behind to win games, people need to have more faith in him and the team.

So would you say you're allowed to slide through the back of a player if the ball isnt near?

Also, it was never 2 seconds. It was the same action. Cavani went for the flick as Smalling went to ground.
Don't think he touched him until well after the ball has passed, and also after Cavani had fallen of his own accord. Whether you call for contact if the ball isn't near is perforce a situational call. But in this case, Cavani had missed the ball, and was in the process of falling over the line before Smalling touched him, so there was AFAICS no question of taking away his opportunity to be in position for rebounds etc if the play continued. As I remember it, though memory is a fickle thing in these matters.

Bad defending for the first (Fred), and the second NEVER a penalty.
The first is never on Fred. He cannot follow Pellegrini and break the offside line, no idea what Scholes is thinking there.

The BIGGEST issue was Mctominay not taking the foul on Pellegrini in their half in the first place. AWB has run out of position offering an overlap, so he has to realise we're in danger. Instead of taking the quick foul he jumps out of the way allowing him to run at Lindelof. Lindelof then decides to do nothing but jockey him (as usual) and they advance to our box. From that point Mctominay again is slow to get out to Mkhitaryan and put him under pressure, then gets nut megged.

If that was Liverpool/City they make the foul before the attack starts and get back into position.

Man Utd 1:0 Roma - Bruno (9')

Man Utd 1:1 Roma - Pellegrini (15' pen)

Man Utd 1:2 Roma - Dzeko (33')

Man Utd 2:2 Roma - Cavani (49')

Man Utd 3:2 Roma - Cavani (64')

Man Utd 4:2 Roma - Bruno (71' pen)

Man Utd 5:2 Roma - Pogba (75')

Man Utd 6:2 Roma - Greenwood (86')
You can see something emerging, 2 players and hopefully Cavani stays one more season and we will be toe to toe with City next season. Just need to emulate second half performances in the 1st half and teams will fear us again. Great Job Reds

That's all fine but it leads to this question.

Are you allowed to slide into the back of anyone in the football pitch?

My argument is if you slide into the back of an attacker in the box, it's a penalty. The ball being near doesn't mean a thing. Otherwise you could just slide into the back of people before a cross comes in, or even after the ball had gone?

If you go to ground, you're running a big risk.

I think Roma themselves looked genuinely surprised to score the second goal. It’s like they knew they were rubbish but somehow they couldn’t believe their luck. Even that goal Dzeko appeared to be losing his balance and only bundled it in with his left leg. Class told in the end

Chalk and cheese between the way we've got to the final this year and how we stumbled over the line under Mourinho. Shaw, Pogba, Fernandes and Cavani were all superb.

We may complain about the team, quite often deservedly so but the football in that second half was of the highest order. Really top stuff. First 15 minutes were good and the goal magical but that second half...

He whiffed and it hit his shin....I could not believe it! That and the dodgy pen, I thought we might be doomed with bad luck. Love Pogba giving a pen when he was actually hustling...haha.

The decision to rest both Pobga, Cavani at the weekend proved to be a shrewd move, both full of energy, running. That was agurably Cavani best game in the United shirt and could easily have scored 4 goals. Pogba really enjoying his football again and more importantly delivering a big impact on games on a more consistent basis.
Very good point. And remember all who slagged Ole for not starting them vs Leeds.

Was never in doubt that we would hit back heavily.

Roma's goals seemed random more than anything. They looked half decent for about five minutes out of ninety - other than that we looked like the far superior side. And the result reflected that in the end.

If United win the Europa League does 5th in the league get Champions league?
No, winning the EL makes no difference if you (also) finish in the top four.

The only scenario where winning the EL could make a difference is a very unlikely one:

If the CL and EL winners both finish below 4th, the team in 4th will not qualify for next season's CL (but will rather drop down, as it were, into the EL group stage).

(The PL gets a maximum of five CL teams - regardless).

Theoretically, this could happen this season:

Chelsea win the CL and finish 5th.

Arsenal win the EL and finish...wherever they're likely to finish.

City win the league, United finish 2nd, Leicester 3rd...and let's say Liverpool then (just randomly chosen - I obviously have nothing against Liverpool as such) in 4th.

Premier League:

1: City
2: United
3: Leicester
4: Liverpool
5: Chelsea

17: Arsenal

CL winners: Chelsea
EL winners: Arsenal

In that scenario, Liverpool would not qualify for the CL (in spite of finishing 4th).

ETA Which would be a terrible shame, of course, for such a great team (best PL team ever, I'm told), but there you go. Rules are rules, etc.

Roma wasn’t that good, we were toying them. It was similar to the spurs game except in this game I thought half of our players didn’t perform in first half but the other half performed very well in second half. I knew we could change the game since our best players were performing in first half and I knew we could come back to win 4-2 but I didn’t expect 6-2.

6-2 was wonderful. At half time I was worried, but we blew them away second half. I know I've said it a million times, but, if we could just upgrade our centre halves, we could be a really top side again. Swallow our pride re Maguire, replace the centre backs and really move forward.

It was a very good performance, just think how good we'll be if we can only stop making those stupid schoolboy/girl errors! Ive been a big critic of Paul Pogbas attitude in the past but against Roma he not only played like the thoroughbred he so obviously is but his attitude and all round performance was superb! Like you I think Fred might be sacrificed as the team improves its all round play; I really like him but next season we have to be more expansive and two defensive midfielders are not condusive to fast, attacking football. It seems that Pogba is finally showing the consistency which has been missing from his game more or less since he arrived and is enjoying his football again and is cutting out the indulgent flicks and tricks and sulks which have for so long marred his game. This is the Paul Pogba I was so looking forward to seeing when he signed and I really hope that next season I'll get the the chance to see that player.

Hopefully it doesn`t come to that as I want to win the Europa League but if we did get beat by the Gooners in the final the above scenario would be terribly sad for Liverpool if they did manage 4th place.

Any one confirm if Pogba was to pick up another yellow in the 2nd leg would he miss the final
Yellow Card rules - at least the way I read it, it is upon the receiving of the 3rd yellow card one is suspended and after the quarter finals all are forgiven. So if Pogba were to receive a second next game, he would not be suspended.

The thing that really pissed me off about this match is the fact WE had to wear our black shorts because Roma didn’t wear/have their maroon shorts.

Everyone is focusing on this ESL shit when bollocks like this is going under the radar.

Looking at the actual wording of the rules, it's an interesting question. Because the ball and any chance of Cavani affecting the play are long gone, it can't be considered 'impeding an opponent with contact.' So the question then is whether it qualifies as 'careless', which the rules define as 'when a player shows a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or acts without precaution.' You could argue that applies to Smalling here but it's definitely up for debate.

you make a good point. Another example is where a defender pulls down an attacker at a corner when the attacker wouldn’t have even got to the ball, or the ball was 15 yards away - it’s still a pen.

it is interesting because there used to be a tendency for pens not to be given If the attacker was kicking the ball out of play, and the ball was no longer under control. Technically should still be a pen, but the convention was often not to give it.

I still think it’s soft, as I thought Cavani landed on Smalling as much as being taken out.

it’s another grey area, that shouldn’t be grey.
