EL W Europa League Semi-finals 2nd Leg

Manchester United 4:1 Athletic Club

Post-match discussion

Just got back. Didn’t expect us to do it the easy way and we didn’t.

It would have got seriously nervous in the ground if they’d have got the second. As it was the equaliser was very welcome and a superb last 20 mins after that.

Great win! All we really needed was one goal to get us through but four will do just fine. How did Garnacho miss that shot? No excuses.

Thing is if Garnacho takes one of those chances, especially that second one, it relieves the pressure on the whole team. Instead, we get more and more nervy. This is what unreliable attackers do to the rest of the team, much the same as Onana the other way. Amad has that assurance that Garnacho doesn’t.

Totally agree. Of course the 1st half we were going to be under pressure, and had the chance to end it. All this bad game plan, etc... is rubbish.

We're a strange, strange football team

Went from thinking if they score a second we're in trouble because we were awful for the first hour or so, to looking like prime Brazil after the subs. Two outrageous goals from Mount and Amad makes such a difference too.

Bilbao, here we come!

Can we play Europa league every week?

Also, the difference it makes having actual good subs to bring on.

I'm glad I'm not the only one mentioning this, it's mind boggling how few people seem to realise how much confidence it gives the opposition when they can be confident that our chances will fall to a player that they can be confident will make hash of them.

The Lyon players visibly stood taller when he missed a sitter against them, the Bilbao players tonight similarly got so much confidence from him wasting 2 glorious chances. And the amount of confidence the opponents gain is reflected in how much our players lose. Spurs will remember all too well the glorious chance he had against them in our most recent match, which he blasted miles over.

The only thing I disagree with about your post is calling Garnacho unreliable. He's extremely reliable, if he starts he'll be on the end of our best chances, and he'll make a mess of them, and it'll cost us the match.

The league campaign has been an abomination, yet we could end up with a European trophy and Champions League qualification. Let’s not blow it now. Spurs are having a very similar season, coincidentally. Let’s win this trophy then look at ahead to rebuilding the squad. We really need to win the final, it feels like a huge moment for the club.

I doubt the players were reading red cafe during the game, mate.
Dunno, Amad was clearly checking his phone after the Hojlund goal.

But my point is more around the general hysteria around the squad after every wrong thing that happens. There's very little nuance in opinion, people are either heroes or trash depending on the last thing they did. It's just not redcafe, twitter is even worse.

Does anyone know what the story is with Rio? Is he unwell? I missed him tonight. Scholes and Hargreaves did well. But Rio has stage presence. If he’s unwell I wish him well.
He posted a picture of himself in hospital. But don't know if the details.

So pleased for Mount, another great European game from Yoro and so glad Amad is back. We can play some shit hot football at times. Onwards!

The BT commentators were being a bit jokey about it, so hopefully a good sign it's not too serious.

I assume you are joking.

Bruno was very important in turning the game too after he dropped into midfield. It was head tennis stuff before that. They made it very compact in the middle and Ugarte especially couldn’t deal with the short spaces. Bruno (and Mount) got us ticking and allowed us to get it out to Amad.

Yeah, we've generally looked better with Bruno deeper lately anyway. I wouldn't be against starting him alongside Casemiro in the final, with Amad and Mount as 10s.

Casemiro and Ugarte together is just asking for trouble from the Spurs press.

Yeah, I think so. Bruno has the engine and has been showing good ball winning stats to suggest he would keep up with the physicality of Spurs midfield.
The only reason you play Ugarte over him is for the physicality.

It's really all in the head. For Manchester United, it's not a 50-50, it's closer to 70% in terms of the impact mentality has on the game. Those boys can play when they feel at ease.

Hi.

An Athletic club supporter here.

Just want to say Congrats. You've better in two matches and you deserve the final game.

Just want to wish you all the best and hoping you'll beat the Spurs.

If there us anything I can help you with in your next visit to Bilbao for EL final game just let me know.
Your team was really unlucky to be missing so many key players, and you still gave us a good game.

Can I stay at your house for the final mate

Fantastic win and performance. Clearly not what some were hoping for based on the match day thread while we were losing.

Let’s end a crappy season with a trophy and champions league football. Far better than Arsenal in their so called great season.

Horrible horrible first 65 minute. We looked nervous, messing up simple passes, not pressing, Athletico had full control and attacked at will.

The three subs Mount, Amad, Shaw completely changed the game they were all quality. Mount played with class and skill, so happy to see him score two outstanding goals. Amad is back to his silky best, he makes Garnacho look poor in comparison.
One player who stood out the whole game was YORO, he was class, reminds me of Rio the way he brings the ball out..

Bring on spurs
I see Rio too when he’s moving with the ball

I'm tempted by this too, but is Spurs too athletic in midfield for that? Casemiro has been awesome but with him and Bruno would we be over run in the middle? That's my concern. But, I suck at tactics.

Only tuned in at the start of the 2nd half and boy that first 25 mins was a rough watch. Was stoked when Mount scored as it was clear it'd be a completely different game after that.

Only way for the team to get stronger mentally is getting seeing out momments like this and bringing in more quality.

Bring on the finals!

Tough crowds to please, we won 4 - 1 and people are still complaining? This kind of game happened a lot under SAF, in fact i dont remember any semifinal game where we cruised easily and compare to those games, tonight was like walking in the park.

Seriously. We win 7-1 over two legs and it’s “sell this player”, “sell that player”. “If that player plays in the final we’d surely lose”. Well they just played and we won. And we might just win again. Christ people enjoy this.

To everyone

We’re in the finals and we didn’t do so well in the first half. But we stay positive and we able to pull it off and win it in the 2nd half.

The last 25 mins were fantastic. The swagger with which we played after the subs and our first goal is what I would like to see much more.

The one glaring issue was how deserted our midfield looked the first 65 mins. You could drive a tractor through there. Almost the whole time whenever Bilbao had the ball they had spare men in midfield who somehow had acres to run into with not a single United player anywhere close. Amorim needs to sort that out as it clearly was more of a tactical set up issue.

Anyway, let’s twat those lily whites next and get ourselves into the CL next season :)

Delighted to be in the final, however need to cope with that press better if Spurs implement it. Choked the life out of us for 70 mins until Mount turned into Macheda 09.

Yeah i think some people have this some misconception about their own club. We are not like Barca who suffocated teams for whole 90 mins totally controlling the game, that is not our football, never was and never will. We are a club who values creativity, a boldness to make decision, and that boldness often come with price that is losing the ball and give opposition chance against us.
