Starts the new season the same way the only one finished. Brighton after hammering United in May get their first ever Old Trafford win and truth they didn't have to play that well to earn it with just 36% possession and scored twice from 4 efforts on target.

An eye opener to lack of talent Erik has to work with many of them too flaky to bring the required improvements.

If we don’t get a new midfield, this season will be more or less the same as the previous one. You can’t win games without a midfield which we clearly don’t have. Scott had a terrible game and it happens too often for him to ever be a first choice cm for us.

Hope, We Lose
The only positive is that we subbed both Fred and McTominay off. Doesnt rectify starting them though

I expected some bumps this season but not that early. We played better second half but it was all too late.

Brighton seem to always play well and yet finish 12th every season.

This is going to take time and we’ll have worse results than this. I think it feels more frustrating because it’s the first game and all that new season excitement just dies.

Disappointing as the second half was quite good I thought with lots of promising signs. Gave ourselves far too much to do though and Brighton are a very well disciplined team so was always going to be tough to get back in it.

First half was really poor though bar the open 5-10. Bruno should have scored and the game could have looked a lot different.

Fred careless is possession again and ideally need to upgrade Dalot as he switches off far too often.

Looked much better with Eriksen playing the deep lying playmaker in the second half and can fully see why a player like De Jong would transform us.

We’ll be lucky to finish in the top 6 if McFred is our midfield pairing for this season. Simply not good enough, never has been and certainly never will be.

One point behind Liverpool, come on!

In all seriousness, everyone bar both our CBs were wank. Don't think the starting XI was wrong, but I guess ETH expected more from our wingers. Dreading the Liverpool game in 2 weeks time.

Also, DDG could've actually intercepted Welbeck's cross.

Those three subs at the 89 or 90 minute mark pissed me off. Why even bother? Splendid way to kill momentum (or whatever you want to call it) and waste time for ourselves.

This team is such a waste of time! New coach same old problems. No dedication to fight and work as a team. Just sell these players lika CR7, McFred! Sancho shined in the friendlies, dissappeared in the match of the season. And a board has to go with these players. No striker signed, no DM signed, but ETH should battle for the 4th place. It is a absolute joke.

We. Needed. A. Complete. Overhaul.

It can't be stressed enough that many of our players will never recover mentally from the constant humiliations they suffered last season, they need therapy. No coach in the world can help them.

The result was predictable

If you start with mcfred you want to lose the game

Mcfred worked only for 3 months 3 yrs ago after sacking Mourinho

I hope ETH doesn't have blind faith as Ole. Maguire is a slow as feck, he will lose every foot race. Please use Varane and Martinez. Rashford is done as a footballer, stop wasting our time please take Garnacho as left winger. McTominay and Fred, what did they good for???? Please shelve them to the bench.

5 minutes does nothing for Garnacho. Nothing. You don't even get a touch. Not one! When someone like Rashford once again plays a full 90 minutes whilst performing terribly what is the message we're sending out?

"We want you to challenge Rashford, but we want you to do it with 1% of his playing time."

We really stack the cards in favour of the status quo by removing any chance of anyone else challenging for their spots with reasonable minutes.

McTominay awful.
Fred not a 6.
Bruno frustrating.
Eriksen better deeper.
Rashford some signs of improvement but he should be understudy to Sancho on the LW until he proves otherwise.
Ronaldo not the problem.
Probably need Varane in the backline or runs in behind will be a constant threat.

Take a look at the fixtures. Legitimately a tough start from the get go. Already shot ourselves in the foot with that start and we played absolutely abyssmal. Plenty of reasons based on the game today to worry even if its so early.

Where's the Europa league thread? We need to be camping in there as it looks the only route through to CL football, unless something changes drastically

But he actually fails to score with nobody around him. Shot it at the keeper ffs.

Where is his head at? fecking lost it with all his non football bullshit. Needs to shut all that shit down and focus on his career, because its about to go down the toilet.
Yeah right, when the chance fell to him he was probably too busy thinking about food banks

Stupid comment.

Agree with the rest mind you.

Ten Hag got what he deserved for starting Maguire, Shaw, McTominay and Fred.

They played at their level again today.

Malacia and Varane should have started today and they better had in the next game.

De Gea
Dalot Varane Martinez Malacia
Eriksen Fred
Sancho Fernandes Rashford
Ronaldo

Eriksen was a monster today covering serious ground because the rest of the team haven't got a bollock between them to get on the ball and make a pass.

Really glad the losers in our team were exposed today. Fernandez, Rashford, McTominay, Maguire and Shaw.

Only silver lining is the club now more urgently have to sign the CDM, Winger and Striker we need in the next 3 weeks.

Shaw shouldn't be starting
One of McFred should be replaced by VDB
Rashford shouldn't be starting ever again, one of the worst players on the pitch.
Never play false 9 again.
Sancho looks great whenever he gets the ball but he never gets the ball. Need to work on bringing him into the game more
Bruno might have been a one season wonder. He's been shockingly bad for far too long.

If we can need to get 2-3 signings in (RB, mid, ST) top four hopeless otherwise

Martinez looks alright. His passing is brilliant. We should let him have a go at CDM. Eriksen was decent as well.

Desperately need quality players in the middle of the park and a proper striker. Pay whatever feck Barca want for FDJ. It is definitely worth it if you consider that millions will be lost by not making it to yet another Champions League. Not that one man will solve all our problems, but at least that will be a start.

McTominay shouldn’t be starting for us.. ever again. Fred isn’t anyway near the quality needed to play as a 6.. should’ve played in the box to box role today. The Eriksen up top experiment didn’t work.. had he started as the 6 it might’ve been a different result.

As for the performance there’s no need to panic. Brighton are a very well drilled team and it showed today.

If we get too 4 this season it will be a miracle.

Imagine that same game today but with a new central midfield player that doesn‘t constantly give the ball away and a new forward that poses a consistent threat to the opposition goal. You know, two of the signings the whole world knew we needed about 6 months ago.

It would be very different wouldn’t it.

Eriksen and Maguire played very well. Martinez was okay, but he had a couple bad moments. The rest were average to bad. McT, Fred, Dalot, Bruno, Rashford, and Sancho were very poor. Worrying first game.

I don't understand the way we set up this game. It looked like an Ole game where the midfield was empty and Fred was playing it alone. McT and Bruno were so far up the pitch.

Its got to the point where I'm not even surprised.

We have signed three players in positions we didn't need to sign them, neglecting positions we did need to sign players. Why should we expect to go forward significantly?

McFred were lucky Bissouma has moved on or today would've been more humbling. Neither are good enough on the ball or off the ball. However, we've known that.

Just like we knew that Welbeck would run Maguire and Martinez ragged. Nice spending £60m+ on a centre back. Wish he had recovery pace...

Look, it is what it is, I'm kinda resigned to where this season ends up. I just hope the hierarchy doesn't blame Ten Hag for it because he's actually a good coach. With a better squad he could transform this team. However, as long as we keep hold of the same players and keep asking the coaches that come in to magically turn them into prime Brazil, nothing can be expected to change.

We played quite well in the second half, but the game management wasn't the greatest with regards to making his subs at the right time. However the main think I took out of that was we don't have the quality in many positions. Better players score goals in that second half.

The willingness to wait on transfers till the end of august, ignored the fact that we could be well out of the race by then.

We are such a comedy gold club it's brilliant. After finishing sixth last season we somehow managed to start this season with an even worse squad. The amount of money needed to be spent this month is not even funny

Oh and as soon as Sky put up that stat of Brighton never winning at Old Trafford...it felt inevitable we'd lose. :(

Cake or Death?
Brighton's two goals were very well worked, not faulting the team for those. Midfield and attack are to blame. Eriksen was good.

I expected a slow start of the season for us, and today's result was not surprising. Disappointing was the passive way we played for most of the first half (first ten we at least seemed to have a game plan).

I thought Maguire was our best player today. He played some progressive passes in the early part of the match. You could see he was trying. Same can’t be said by rest of the team apart from maybe Martinez

Eriksen can hold his head high, Ronaldo/Sancho tried and Lisandro grew into it.
The rest was absolute garbage and Dalot worst of the lot.

Really bizarre transfer window, not addressing the absolutely critical weakness in centre mid, in either numbers or quality and a really poor first half.

It's tempting just to ruck this off and come back in a few years.

Came close to smashing some stuff up when Malachia kept fouling and giving throws away last 3mins.
