Once again I'm screaming at them to stop trying to play out from the back at goal kicks. I don't need the stress.

Nice goal by Matic.
Nothing from Lingard.
Lindelof is a lightweight.
Williams is terrific but is not getting forward enough - too hesitant.
Martial can trap it further than I can kick it.
AWB has telescopic legs.
The rest were average.

This must be a fluke, how the feck an amateur manager beat the world's best manager?!
By out scoring them like before xmas. As for this nonsense "world''s best manager" really based on what ?

He hasnt seen a CL final since he left uefalona, took over treble winners BM in a league at the time no different to SPL and got his arse spanked 4-0, 1-0 in semi's, following year yet again spanked in SF and this time his tika taka seen his side, oh yeah not one shot on target in the game.

Good effort, little quality. Nothing unexpected really, apart from somehow winning the game.

Why in Earth did Fred take that free-kick at the end though... bizarre.
Because Mata isn't a strong enough character to grab the ball and say I'm taking this, step aside Fred you wouldn't score in a whore house.

So proud of the team, and MANAGER, to go to City, who apparently have won 7 of the last 8 trophies available in England over the last few years which kinda suggests they're pretty good, and win twice this season, deservedly so as well, with a shite Manager, a loads of shite players, and more than our fair share of deadwood, is a friggin phenomenal achievement - beat your chests with pride girls and boys there's life left in the club yet, despite the rumours.

Honestly I think this might've been the last straw for Lingard.

Probably wrong but we can hope.
Won the match, lost the tie, so this was my favorite moment from the night.

Jesse lost the ball that led to one of the best scoring chances of the night. Ole showing his eyes are indeed working. And letting Jesse know hes just not been good at all.

We won, but it could have easily be 4 or 5-1 to City.
Ridicilous mistakes by our defensive and midfield players. Players who are paid not to make mistakes are making COSTLY mistakes. Not mistakes that might lead to the goal, but mistakes that should be punished with direct goal! Come on team, what's going on!? Can we sort that out? I know we are not that great up front, but you can't combine that with careless mistakes!

I've only seen the highlights but it looked like we were very poor and City should have won by 4 or 5. Is this not a fair reflection?

Quite surprised when I saw the positivity on here.

United did well to make a match of it, just missed a bit of quality. Matic shouldn’t have been sent off either. 2nd yellow was highly questionable.

These City players were taking about moving on in the CL after the game. The have no chance. They have dropped so far in performance in last 7-8 months. They looked scared at the end of 10 men at home.

I would say they will be out of the CL in short order.
So weird that they're favorites to win the CL. Liverpool are streets ahead.

My thoughts exactly... Just saw a 20 minute mini match and City could have scored 4 goals in the first 15 minutes and at least 10 during the whole match. Effin miracle we didn't get demolished. Beyond me how we actually won.

Tbh for chunks of the game City were nowhere.

I'm sure a stat flashed up at some point in the 2nd half that said shots at goal before 23 mins City 9 - 0 United. Shots since 23rd mins City 0 - 3 United.

We could have and I think lost expected us to get bounced but with our best player, our most in form player and our most improved player all missing we still won the game. They were able to bring 1st team players on as subs while we have sod all.

That game is a clear example of our entire coaching team not being on the required level. What's rule 101 for dealing with an opposition's high press?

CB's split very wide, DM drops in between to receive from keeper, FB/WB's push higher and wider (as a diagonal out ball) CM drops into place where DM was (for an out ball there).

Granted we played with three in CB, but the principle still goes. Two CB's split wide, Shaw moves forward into DM as Matic drops back between split CB's.

What did we see? Matic and Fred holding position in DM (covered by City player). CB's holding position on the ball. WB's not pushing high and wide. Which resulted in the same clearance down the line from Shaw and Lindelof to either Martial or James.

We don't have tactical specialists involved in our coaching team. It doesn't take world class players in every position to tactically plan for playing out of a press.
for those tactics to work, you need players who are confident with passing the ball. Our defenders are anything but. They never put the right weight and spin on the ball. It's almost always behind the receiving player, who has to break stride, pause, take half a step back, receive the ball, think over his options and then pass it backwards. It's so infuriating.

Mostly how we win big games under Ole. Everyone seems to lap it up, but I don’t see it being successful long term.

Even the slightest positive is a huge deal under Ole, apparently. A few weeks ago we won the lost 2-0 to Liverpool prize.

Hm, i can clearly recall 4 shooting chances for them in the second half: Walker long shot, which troubled DDG; Sterling great 1v1 chance that he botched; Maguire misplaced pass in the penalty area , which they managed to miss as well; and one Aguero shot, which went dangerously close into the side netting.

And that is not mentioning the 2 offside goals (only throwing them in there because both were very close calls), the terrible Lidelof pass around the 40th minute and some minor situations the could have led to a goal.

On the other end, bar the Matic goal, I can only recall 1 header by Maguire.

Also, the injury situation is our fault. We have 3 players injured (be it our best performing/talented) and no adequate cover...

I do tend to agree partly.

I am so sick of us getting absolutely dominated by City, it’s quickly becoming the norm, we honestly need to improve this squad and be able to stand toe to toe with them if we want to call ourselves a big club.

This was Ole's opportunity to bring up City's persistent tactical fouling. Until someone speaks up and makes a fuss, refs will keep letting them go unpunished.
It was the first thing he was asked about and he went on a rant about it before catching himself.

I'm not sure why they cut that bit out. This was the only vid of it I could find in Twitter.

We’ve beaten City away twice in a couple of weeks, and I’m super pleased with that.
Can’t understand people moaning about being dominated, out of the cup etc. City have been much much better than us the last 6 or 7 years, but we’re finally catching up. They will always dominate the play, as long as they have Pep, just like Barca did when we played them. Doesn’t mean we can’t beat them over a season or in a knockout match.

Looking forward to the race for fourth and next season!

Just need to improve our home form against them! Swear we've only won twice against them since Fergie retired.

In fact, from the start of 2010 to now we've only beat them 4 times at home! Twice in the league cup and twice in the PL. We've drawn once and and lost 7 in that time. Embarrassing really, we need that rectifying.

On the other hand, we beat them 7 times away in that time. Drawn twice and lost 5 (not including 1 win and 1 loss at Wembley).

It's the lack of urgency when doing it that kills me.

If you're going to play out from the back, do it quickly and before the opponent can set their shape. We wait for them to get into position and start pressing us, then start rolling the ball around our own box.

In general it was a committed, well organised performance. Lingard and Martial were absolutely brutal but most of the others can look back on their performance with some real positives.

Would love to get City’s foul count v yellow cards from the 180 mins.
Maybe Ole should have called the tactical fouling before the game last night to put some pressure on the ref? It was too late after the game.

It's absolutely wild how Old Trafford is almost a guaranteed win for City while we regularly win at the Etihad. It's the most bizarre thing in the post-Fergie era (and of course they even won the last two league games against Sir Alex at Old Trafford).

He did that last season I think.

It didn't make a blind bit of difference

How many times do we have to lose the ball before realising we can't play from the back? I'm in panic mode every time I see that.
And happy to see Ole finally shout at someone!

Decent game against far superior opponent. Just wish Pereira had taken that free kick. Yes, Mata is better, but I think it was more suited for right foot.

These city games made me think of football practice. Two teams picked where one is much better. The better team plays around and do not finish there chances properly and the poorer team are eager to show that they can hang with the best players.

The most annoying thing about last night apart from the overall result of course is the red card for Matic. He was our best outfield player and I would have liked to have seen him alongside Bruno on Sunday. Nice to see him on form again.

Let's not kid ourselves, we may have won the game but we wer as poor as ever in some departments. Never strung five meaningful passes together (City's ability to do so saw them through to the final), gave the balla away constantly, often in dangerous areas, the midfield crated very little and the forwards were static as hell: I have no idea why Ole kept Matial and Lignard on and took Greenwood off. The Plan A tractic of playong on the break got us nowhere again and there is still no evidence of a Plan B. The win will be used as a raeson for prolonging the inevitabel: Ole isn't up to the job and we need at least three new midfielders and a real goal scorer. Meanwhile, Lingard and Martial should be shipped out. Positives: DDG looked sharper than in recent weeks and I thought Lindelof had a good game. Matic was pretty good too...

Had some obligations and I watched the second half. I have only one question. What the f... is Fred doing taking a free kick (basically the only chance we had in the second half) when there is a healthy Mata on the pitch?

Mata mentioned that Fred was doing really well with free kicks in training so he let him take it. Wish he didn't.

Are cards from the cup transferable to the league?
