They did the same to McTominay. When they come into the team I am pretty sure they are under instruction just to keep it simple, keep possession, until they get over their nerves and get used to the speed and physicality of the game. Then, like Scott, they can start to express themselves more.
They're expecting them to be teenage Fabregas when he's an exception not the rule. Can't remember many other young CMs, in the last couple decades being as good as a young him. Wilshere?

Throw away match really, it should be a given that we beat teams like partizan by 3 or 4 goals with ease and that's with a 2nd side let alone what we had out there today which was about as strong as we could play.

I dont quite get the purpose of field such a strong side, we sure as hell ain't winning the Europa league under Solskjear considering the possibility of teams like Dortmund, inter Milan, red bull salzburg and Valencia dropping down into the competition from the champions league.
Might as well not even bother trying in the matches then I guess.

The idea of fielding the strongest side is very understandable. The result tonight is not the important factor in beating Partizan. It is for Sunday. Now we must play positively on Sunday but I am still worried about the easy way Partizan cut through the midfield. I think with Young not playing it may be better on Sunday. But we need to take our chances and we missed more tonight than we scored.
I am puzzled by the fact that Lingard gets to play while players like Gomes doesn't. Lingard should not be near the squad either. I thought Mata was the worst when trying to defend. Lingard is worse. He always jogs behind the opposing player when trying to get the ball. At least Mata goes at full speed and if he cannot he tries to foul the player and stop him. With Lingard it is just escorting the opposing player.
Gomes is injured. He has been for weeks now.

....and Solskjaer has won it!
Good first half. McTominey and Greenwood were the two standouts for me, although all the front three (bar a few wasted chances by Rashford) plus Mata did well too. Except for his near costly mistake I thought Fred did well in keeping the ball moving. The only 10 goes to the singing section doing it all by themselves; with a 9 for the away corner who were still singing when 3-0 down.

The key issues for me was our forward passing often being way too easy to read and thus intercept; (possibly not helped by) a lack of movement in the team for large periods, although Mata's forays into the box were a positive; and I'd also.like to see more aggression when out of possession, not that you can touch anyone these days.,

Rashford was the star of the show imo. He missed lots of chances but he also created a lot. His assist for the first one was world class or lucky. I'm not sure he meant the ball to go the way it did. Also I was surprised he didn't take any of the 2 freekicks.

Martial scored a brilliant goal, pure instinct. World class goal

It was a decent win, 3 nice goals as well. Just out of curiosity what level would Partizan be if they played in England? Championship? League 1?

Obvious things from tonight
Rashford and martial scorers of great goals not great goalscorers
Mata 10 times the player Periera is
Greenwood ... get a forward in short term but this guy will be our CF for years to come
Let’s give Ole credit for sorting the defence out
Lindelof and Tuanzebe are injured. He deserves credit for not picking Phil Jones, though.

Rojo was a real surprise. I don't remember him playing that well since his ACL injury.

Good result but what We've done so far, overall is still not good enough.

Can't see Ole keeping his job if this keeps going. We should not wait till Astana/Partisan or Liverpool/Chelsea/City/Tottenham to be able to win or play some decent football.

We only turn up against terrible sides or top sides. Nothing in between (which is like 70% of the season's matches).

I think Ole is the first manager to finally figure out how to use Phil.

He's a very good defender, just not for more than a couple of consecutive matches because he'll get injured. So keep him on the bench and play others ahead of him. Players like Rojo who can put in a run of 10-15 games before injuries become more likely.

I do not understand why Ashley Young keeps getting 90 minutes game in, game out. It's a good day for him when he's just mediocre instead of being an active hindrance. Brandon Williams has looked impressive every time he has played, and I understand Ole wants to protect the lad but for feck's sake you have to give him games EVENTUALLY if you want him to develop.

Other than that, decent performance. First half was dynamite and it could've been 5-0 at the half, Rashford and Martial looked great and Greenwood threatened too. Took our foot off the gas pedal for the second half, and then the inevitable arrival of the likes of Lingard killed off the rest of United's attacking threat. I really really REALLY hope McTominay didn't mess up his ankle too bad because if he's out, United are well and truly fecked.
Ashley Young is suspended against Brighton. Williams will get his first PL start at Old Trafford this weekend. He would have gotten minutes last night if not for McTominay hobbling off.

At least a little bit excitement and some chances created from open play.
Partizan are a poor side but I give them some credit for not just trying to defend for 90 minutes. If they had just stayed back we would have had trouble again to break them down and create anything.
I am pretty sure we will see the same old crap on Sunday.

We played similar to the first half against Bournemouth. High penetrative forward passes down the middle of the field. This time, we actually scored goals.

There's no better player at this club with their first touch and tight space control as Mata. Despite his athletic limitations, I love him as a small #10.

Rashford could have had a hat trick really.

Lingard depressed me. He's just so out of tune with effective football right now it's laughable.

The only positive thing about last night was that there is no new negative thing to worry about.

Picking up positives would only make the upcoming suffering even harder to take.

Very good first half. Like the good old days. Second half was what we've become used to the last few years.

Only real negative was Mctom coming off injured. Looked like either a kick to the ankle or he possibly rolled it a bit whilst stretching for the ball. Unless he sprained it, I think he should be ok. Seems the type of lad that will strap it up, take an injection and soldier on.

Really pleased to see Greenwood score again, when he's in front of goal he seems pretty lethal. Very clever finish, everybody was expecting the curler (Especially the keeper).

Amazingly we still only have 5 different goal scorers this season (Rashford, Martial, Greenwood, James and McTominay) and we are well into November.

I don't know how one would check that, but it must be some sort of record.

Did you come to the post match thread to say that the win wasn't good enough? We won, what else could we possibly do for this match? "Not good enough"? I'm really not sure there is a way to argue that the forwards gaining confidence is a net loss, but here we are.

Bunch of miserable bastards. Just enjoy the win. Our football was highly entertaining. If you can't enjoy that then perhaps this isn't the game for you.

I checked. In the EPL we only have 4 goalscorers this season. (Greenwood has not scored in the Premier League)

There are some teams with only 5 or 6, but MUFC have the fewest individual goalscorers so far this season.

Unsurprisingly Liverpool top that stat with 12 individual goalscorers.

More interestingly, Marcus Rashford is 9th in most shots with 30, Agüero tops with 37 shots.

Next MUFC players on that list? Andreas Pereira and Scott McTominay with 19 each. (shared rank 35). We need to get Haaland in the January window.

For once very few negatives so barring Young and Fred starting ahead of Williams and Garner and Mata showing that he’s finished at the level we require I don’t have anything bad to say.

The front three of Greenwood, Martial and Rashford was very balanced with Greenwood being a left footer, with their pace and guile I think having a playmaker and Pogba in the team could see them flourish.

We were positive from the beginning and produced enjoyable football for the majority of the game, so I'm very satisfied regardless of the quality of opposition. I think the relatively early goal was important, if we'd continued to waste chances I could see us having retreated into our shell but to put them away before 50 minutes with goals of very high quality (particularly Martial's:drool:) was very pleasing. I'm sure no United fans whatsoever are getting carried away with that but enjoying it for what it was, qualification in the EL and an entertaining performance, is fine.

Good result but (what We've done so far, overall) isn't enough. Edited my post to make it clearer, sorry I forgot to include it.

Give Mason number 11 and we're all set.
Mata showed the importance of a playmaker tonight. We need Pogba back ASAP.
Mata was hardly involved. Slow, off pace. Probably our worst outfield player by some distance.

We need a Playmaker yes, but Mata is not that guy.

I like many, enjoyed the first half and bored with the second.

The game was won, happy we saw it out without conceding.

Lots of positives, some traits in this game further illustrate that certain players aren't the future but we work with what we got and try and make the most out of it.

Positives.
Rashford:
Misses a lot of chances, misses easy passes in threatening areas, often runs down blind alleys highlighting poor decision making. BUT he is always a threat, loved how he played on the turn and ran at players. Deserved a goal, should have took both free kicks. Bit annoyed he wasn't screaming for them after his strike v.chelsea. A decent night for him.

Greenwood:
More game time and the better he will be. Looks at home on the left. One of them players you know, if given a sight of goal, he'll hit the target. He's clinical.

Martial:
Good hold up play, worked well with the other forwards. Cracking goal.

Mata:
Poor night. Way off pace. To me, didn't get involved much and when he did was wasteful

McTom:
Absolute work horse, wins the ball back and plays with drive and determination. On the ball, his passing is wayword. Frustrating to watch mis placed passes. Definitely an area of his game to work on

Fred:
Done ok, ticked over well. Passing again poor on times. Two noticeable wayward passes which put us in danger. Seems to be holding back, he often charges to close down then just backs off when you feel he could win the ball. Doesn't carry the ball forward enough for me.

Young:
See mata. Understand why he played due to suspension on weekend, but he is god awful. Looks likely to make a mistake every time he has the ball.

AWB:
Done ok, as ever defensively sound. Forward play not great, but done what was needed. Really do need him confident in the attacking third to make a complete player out of him,

Maguire:
Decent, under no real threat, made a mess of some passes but who didn't?

Rojo:
Again looked assured. Didn't do much wrong. Proving to be a decent squad option.

Romero:
No comment, had nada to do.

So on review - the tempo was good, the workrate, the forwards worked ok together and the defence done what was required.

This was a very very poor opposition and the wayward passes would be punished against better teams.

The passing from us as team is worrying, we are extremely wasteful.

If the front 3 play like that in every game though, goals will keep coming.

Good watch. Feels good to have enjoyed a performance. A bit flat in the end - but was expected with Lingard, Andreas and Garner on the pitch at the same time.

Lingard and Andreas didn't do anything to show that they should be a part of the future of this team
Garner?????

First half was very enjoyable to watch, a couple of nice goals in the game which is nice. Link up play was much better than the previous few games as well, just shows if you have a proper number 10 in the team how effective it can be.
Happy for us to take the foot off the gas once 3 up, no point to risk players by pushing too hard.

Only downfall for me was the sloppy passing when we had possession. Maguire and Fred a couple of times gave the ball away needlessly.

Still 3 points and top of the table, hopefully rest a few big players for our next away trip now.

Good game, good performance and the most important thing is we have qualified for the knockout stage!

Oh and the the atmosphere wasn’t to bad either? I moved seats last night for the first time to the TRA section, the lads in there are trying their best to improve the atmosphere at OT.

Young is suspended for the next PL game so Brandon is going to start and play the full 90 against Brighton on Sunday. With Shaw still not match ready it made sense not to risk Brandon tonight and possibly end up with no available Left Back for the league game. If Young had not been suspended for the next game I expect Brandon would have started tonight.
That makes sense! I'd missed Young's suspension, so barring the sudden appearance of Ashley Young in a fake moustache and wig on Saturday this seems like a good move. My bad!

McTominay and Fred did give the ball away a bit too much, but they were moving it forward and playing riskier. That will pay off in the long term. I do love the defensive tenacity that both of them show, pretty much for the entire 90+. Wish Ole had taken McT off instead of Fred, though.

Mata is mature and smart, but slow. And he can only last 60 most games. Garner is learning, and he makes some good moves, but other times it seems he gets a bit overwhelmed. Lingard was a low-risk body to throw out there last night. He can do a job for a few minutes and get someone off the field. Pereira sometimes shows he's getting there, other times he doesn't. I do like his corners. We need Pogba back sooooo badly.

Rashford missed a lot of shots, but he was attacking. If he had the patience of Greenwood, we'd have a seriously deadly front three. And with Greenwood in the mix, we have four front line players. Still need to bring in another creative striker, though.

Martial. What a difference he makes!

It's not what a lot want to hear, but I think we are seeing progress as a team. Nowhere near the level we've come to expect over the years, but Partizan is a team we should have beaten 3-0, or more, and we did.

I did think that Partizan kicked it up a bit the second half, and that's when we dropped into a much more defensive stance. That said, we scored two in the first half from open play, then backed it up with a third goal in the second half and we didn't concede in the waning minutes. Concentration held, finally.

Was interesting to see Rashford dropping deep and playing long balls like Pogba, maybe they are trying to find a solution to "no midfield" problem that we have.

I disagree. I think he showed he's the only real No.10 we have. Lingard and Pereira are willing to run a lot, but their quality on the ball is atrocious.

We should just give up on the 4-2-3-1 altogether. McTominay and Fred have impressed me so much lately, we should switch to a 4-3-3 again when Pogba comes back.

What good quality on the ball did Mata show?

All I seen was him being bullied off it or mis-placing passes or being so slow and off the pace of the game that he didn't make the simplest of runs into space.

Its a big trend to hate on Lingard and Periera right now, and I agree both have faults. But this Mata lovng after his show v Partizan is incredibly difficult to understand. He was a passenger all game
