Potential Centre Back signing?

I'm still around mate.

The priority for us should be to sign central midfielders who have the ability to evade the press in confined spaces and progress the ball forward while maintaining a good level of ball retention. And then that should be backed up by the CBs and the deepest central midfielder controlling the rest defense out of possession in 1v1 situations.

And as far as the CB position is concerned, I don't think it's a pressing need. I think our CBs could really do with having a central midfield who not only provide the ability in confined spaces but also have the out of possession game, where they're positioned in tandem and in-sync with the CB pairing whether that be playing in a higher line or in a more conservative lower block. This is the key area which will bring about the biggest upside in the team imo.

Good to know mate!

I agree with midfield, but I don't think it's enough. You still rate Diomande that highly? He was linked with both Newcastle and Palace last summer but went nowhere (they're now in the QF of the CL).

Ousmane Diomande is a very interesting young CB talent who I feel has all the tools to be a big success in the EPL. But unfortunately for him, he's missed chunks of the season due to muscle injuries which is always a big worry and a risk for a prospective buyer. He got injured in the first game of the current season and missed 6 games and then missed games again on a few occasions for the same reasons which has disrupted his season. I think for that reason I'm a little apprehensive about us signing Ousmane Diomande.

For me a prospective new CB must carry a big progressive passing threat and if that ability on the ball is then backed up by the physicality, athleticism and pace. Then you have a very strong CB potentially who is either ready to excel in the first 11 or has the potential to excel via the work on the training ground.

Personally I'd sign Castello Lukeba from Leipzig because he has the tools to become a defender who can exell in a team that aims to sacrifice defensive stability for goals.

When we look at our team with Martinez and without, we clearly need someone that can pass between the lines from the back, it gives us a huge advantage.

I’d love us to get Nico Schlotterbeck, he’s like a bigger, faster, more physical version of Martinez for me.

The Belgian guy called Zeno Debast is a very good passer. Can be defend though?

We were linked recently. Some reports Vivell was in talks with Leipzig. He left Leipzig a year before they bought him from Lyon (for not an insignificant fee) but he may have already been on Leipzig's radar back then. He's not the tallest, but given how enormously better we are as a footballing side with Martinez, my main preference is ball playing ability and passing range, pace is vital too. Cubarsi seems to me to be the only complete package I know of, and he's not really the complete package yet, just very likely he will become that.

I think we will need an aerially dominant centre back too. We've seen how huge a difference Lammens has made, but before Lammens came in, we were not just playing with terrible goalkeepers, but we were usually bullied in the air too. Maguire is a hail-mary in my book and should not be a first XI player next season.

As I've already made a point of in the thread, there is every chance De Ligt and Martinez won't be readily available next season, so to plan on them being mainstays is negligent.

I'd honestly favour a guaranteed first XI centre back as first priority after the midfield is sorted. Yes, we need a left sided attacker, but if we can get the spine right we will have raised the floor of the team massively. I also doubt we'll sign two midfielders of that all around qualities that will mitigate the lack of pace in our backline.

Shame about Diomande. Physically he looks so imposing, like an actual centre back.

Should take advantage of the Bastoni situation and get him out of Italy. Tremendous player.

Seems to be some Schlotterbeck rumors.

Could be to get Madrid to pay up or a new contract.

It all started from this. I am not sure how much of good source is this. Can someone please confirm.

Being public enemy no 1 for the red against Bosnia.
No, that’s seen as karmic justice after he dived in the Inter-Juve game to get an opponent a second yellow, which can’t be overturned, then promptly celebrated his cheating like a right knob. He got absolutely torn to shreds in Italy for it. That’s why he’s public enemy number one.

It’s all gone totally tits up for him since then too, culminating in his red card.

Oh, like Beckham in 2002 then. Maybe he too would like the Man Utd protection and have the season of his life.

Didn't know that bit. Still a great footballer.

Seems like there's a bit more to it with the above, but definitely would be a fantastic signing.

I'd pick Scalvini over him, but wouldn't pass up a player of his experience and quality with our defence the way it is.

Don't think we're interested and he'll probably end up elsewhere, but definitely one of the very few defenders that can replace Licha on the ball.

Couldnt care less about signing a center back until we sign a left back and at least 2 defensive midfielders

For a CB we have Yoro, Heaven, Maguire, Licha... Sure two of them are kids and the other two injury-prone, but have you seen who we have for a left back, ffs?

Last summer, the focus was on strengthening the forward line. This summer, attention is on the midfield, with centre-backs becoming the priority in the following window. There’s no immediate urgency to sign a centre-back, but succession planning is important, particularly with a view to eventually replacing both Maguire and potentially Martínez, which could mean refreshing two first-choice starters.

With that in mind, I’d target Van Hecke and Murillo. If the team continues to build in a 3+2 structure, both fit the profile well. Van Hecke is composed, reliable in possession and good in the air, while Murillo offers strong ball progression, especially through carrying. Both are at the right age and align with the INEOS policy.

Schlotterbeck seems a little bit sketchy.

If Carrick stays I can’t see us playing 3 at the back very often

Marcos Senesi is about to choose his next team.

His agents are in close contact with Chelsea, Tottenham, and Manchester United.

The rest of the teams are much further away.

Seems like a no-brainer on a free and with our injury prone centre-back options.

He's been one of the best defenders in the PL this season.

All I saw in the media the last few days was that Maguire re-signing was a shrewd move because of his experience.... Now 3 days later and people realise this now means we're not able to sign another centreback.

I think it's a shame we didn't let Maguire finally leave on a free and sign a durable centreback around 24 years old with solid first team experience.

De Ligt, Martinez, Yoro and Heaven have all had injuries this season. This was lazy planning by the club.

Who's that? I mean, those can't just be the only criterias, they obviously need to be good enough. And considering we're in desperate need for midfield signings, another attacker and likely a LB, we would not have enough funds to sign a new CB who's good enough. There are also CBs out of contract this summer that we could be looking to sign, for example Senesi from Bournemouth. You never know what the club has planned.

We’re not signing a centre back this summer. Senesi will probably end up at Barca because he’s free, they’re skint and they need defenders.

United would definitely sign a CB this summer infact I am more than certain we would actually buy one as a Starter anything else would be sheer negligence .

I agree unless it's a free transfer signing. Even then it's a hard sell. We play with two starting CBs, come join us and compete with the 5 other CBs we already have.

We have more pressing priorities elsewhere ie. potentially 3 x CMs, a LB and a LW. Also maybe a backup keeper if Vittek stays on loan next season.

Yep. I agree, loan Vitek. You don’t want two relative rookies as your keepers; he’d be better served going to a newly promoted side. Spend big on midfield and left back, add low cost depth up front because it’s unlikely we’ll have the budget left.
