Potential signings for defense?

What the feck? I've just seen Liverpool are getting Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona. How were we not in for him?
We're steering clear of players on massive wages who don't justify it. It's Liverpools turn to burn through money

We should have signed the guy forest have just signed. Seems like teams can pick up decent players for around the 30m mark. If we want some of them players the quotes are ridiculously high

You been living under a rock? Yes decent but comes with a lot of issues, Notting to be jealous about

Any player that takes like 9 months off for mental health issues because he was finding criticism pushing him over the edge on top of injuries, probably doesn’t have the mental fortitude needed to play for United. It remains to be seen whether he can make a positive contribution to his team in the PL

May not work out, but to me it would have been worth the risk. He is still really good. There are other players that have struggled with mental health issues, Richarlison and Iniesta are two examples. Don't think they really took time off but people are different.

Araujo hasn't been good for years. He's also even more injury prone than Mount, on ridiculous wages, and seems to be in a bad place mentally on top of all that. Even if he wasn't on extortionate wages he'd be a terrible option. If you're going to get upset over us not signing a cb, the signings of Antonio Silva by Bournemouth and Ousmane Diomande by Forest would make far more sense.

I was surprised we weren't interested

We don’t have a spare 30m floating around, that’s why we’re not getting involved. We are seemingly saving for a LB or CM. But not sure how much
Marshall thinks could be another technical CM in £30-£50m bracket probably in mould of Santos

So why did Liverpool sign him on a loan deal? He is still very good, and it's just a loan. If it doesn't work out then he goes back. If he does well, is he still a terrible option?

Antonio Silva who has regressed since his debut season? He wasn't even a starter for Benfica any more. Diomande would probably be solid, but if I remember right, he's not played much with 2 CB at the back.

We have 2 of those in Shaw & Martinez, I'd rather we got a starting LB and left Shaw for cover LB/LCB
Both of which aren't very good in the air and injury prone. We need more aerial presence in the ranks.

I dont disagree at all i just dont see it being a priority for now, but it would be nice to have more presence than relying on Harry to clear the decks, and have another goal threat from corners, especially since Case is gone.

I think at this point I’d rather put that money towards a starting LB. And hope that one of our young midfielders can develop enough to be 4th choice next season. A LB would transform us and take us to the next level. Would also allow Shaw to play and cover at LCB

Because Liverpool are a mess and panicking. Their window as a whole has been awful to this point and have you conveniently forgotten that they're coming off the back of one of the worst transfer windows in history? Over £400m spent and Ekitike the only one looking close to anything ressembling a success.

Araujo is not very good. He was very good 3/4 years ago. He's been consistently poor since then. Barcelona fans will be ecstatic to be rid of him even if just for 1 year.

Antonio Silva might not have developed as well as expected but he's still only 22, was their vice captain last season, and still made the 2nd most cb starts beside Otamendi. Tomas Araujo who played both instead of and beside him throughout the season is also a very good, young cb, so it's not like he was just benched for some average squad player when he was rotated. Not sure I'd necessarily have wanted him at Utd immediately but I expect he'll do well at Bournemouth.

Nothing suggests we're intending to sign a cb this season in any case.

Who would you like to sign other than Hall?

Who would you like to sign other than Hall?
I know we’ve been linked with Robinson from Fulham but I’d rather we went for someone like Raum from Leipzig. He’s quite a creative Left sided player.

Who is the better player out of the two, don't see us signing a CB unless De Ligt or Martinez returns are delayed
I’d sign both if Hall is off the table. Both can play left back but Seys can play right back just as well as he plays left back. He looked very impressive in champions league.
Salinas I haven’t seen, but he’s really highly rated and at 19 has huge potential . Think he had 8 assists last year from left back.

Ousmane Diomande to Nottingham Forest for £34m. Why cant United pull deals off like that? I honestly dont get it about our negotiators.

Diomande and Murillo is going to be a very interesting CB partnership. Big if, but if Diomande adapts to the league it could be one of the best in the league.

Won't they be playing in a back three under Glasner?

True, I completely forgot Glasner was there now. Makes even more sense then Murillo LCB - Milenkovic CCB - Diomande RCB.

Yeah, they look a formidable trio.

It’s been said before, either we have no interest in signing a CB this summer or we do not have the budget left to address another position after CM or LB

Yeah the only way we were ever signing a CB this summer is if we received a crazy bid for one of our current lot. Unlike CM, GK, LB, and to a lesser extent ST, we at least have depth at CB. It will 100% be the big focus next summer along with RB, and possibly LB again if Shaw leaves.

Going into the new season, I think this is where our centre-backs are at.

S Tier:
A Tier:
B Tier: De Ligt (currently injured), Maguire
C Tier: Martinez, Yoro, Heaven

De Ligt and Maguire in their prime are/were A Tier but can you rely on them against every type of striker? Martinez is amazing on the ball but only B Tier at best if you could somehow factor out injuries. Yoro and Heaven have the potential to reach A Tier if everything goes well with their development.

I still feel like we need an S Tier centre-back who can help us play a high line. We have the numbers, but we lack a bit of quality. This summer is probably too soon to address it, though.

Who do you put in those top 2 tiers?
I’m curious about the benchmark and also whether there are options available.

We have numbers, we don’t think we have depth at all.

I think the issue is that we have too many players on the payroll.

That’s why I would bring someone in, and get rid of Martinez. That increases the no of CBs we have by .5 of a player. We still have Magiire who is missing more games (but only a season left) and De Ligt who we couldn’t sell now anyways who misses too many games.

The likelihood of Shaw remaining injury free now we have mid week games is remote.

No good having depth if they can’t actually get in the pitch.

It's a funny one, because you can only show you're top class by joining a top team but you can only join a top team by showing you're top class.

I don't want to be one of those posters who scours Fotmob for players with decent stats and pretends to be an expert about them. My only point is that no team can seriously challenge at the top of the PL or CL without an S Tier centre-back. Whomever that may be, we need to find the next one before he joins a rival. Someone like Gabriel, Saliba, Pacho, Marquinhos, Van Dijk, Dias or Upermacano.

The best idea I had about it was Lacroix before he joined Chelsea, but that's off obviously the table now.

I honestly don’t know the answer. We’ve missed a few PL CBs moving clubs. I frankly don’t have the knowledge outside the PL and top European clubs.

I find it hard to believe we can’t find a player aged (approx 23-29) who is a good international level player, with a good fitness record for £50m?

We cannot get to next summer and need to buy two CBs and a left back. We need some stability in that area of the pitch.

Looks fairly certain we will need to buy 2 CB's then

All of those were from a level or 2 lower so it seems promising.
I think we’ll potentially be looking for 2 CB next year, the ones I could see would be Murillo, Lukeba and Quansah - all attainable for the right fee.

What we do in regards to CBs next summer will depend on the development of Yoro and Heaven. Also if de light and Martinez can remain fit.

I expect Maguire to leave next summer unless the club decide his experience and leadership is too valuable to lose.

I expect quite a few teams to be in for commanding proven centrebacks next summer. Us, Liverpool (VVD replacement), Madrid etc.

Apparently it's one of the most difficult positions to recruit for as CBs are required to be multi skilled. Good enough to receive possession under pressure and pass out. Also to be able to deal with 1 on 1 defending and have recovery pace. It's become a demanding list of requirements.
