Potential signings for defense?

It's a funny one, because you can only show you're top class by joining a top team but you can only join a top team by showing you're top class.

I don't want to be one of those posters who scours Fotmob for players with decent stats and pretends to be an expert about them. My only point is that no team can seriously challenge at the top of the PL or CL without an S Tier centre-back. Whomever that may be, we need to find the next one before he joins a rival. Someone like Gabriel, Saliba, Pacho, Marquinhos, Van Dijk, Dias or Upermacano.

The best idea I had about it was Lacroix before he joined Chelsea, but that's off obviously the table now.
You are basically describing Yoro and maybe even Heaven

PS: wasn't meant to be critical. You just mentioned that both have potential to become A class. And then in your next post you said we should get a talent before they reach top tier. So that's what I meant and I personally believe Yoro can become S tier if he fulfills his potential. He's got everything, just needs to be more focused. I do agree though that we gotta sign one more CB with S tier potential and I was hoping for Luka Vuskovic before he joined Brighton (but I guess wrong timing).

We have been linked to Edmond Tapsoba, he looks like a good CD.

Physical, Elite Ball Progression,Composure Under Pressure, high Recovery Pace & Mobility.

Yeah maybe we finally firm up interest next summer

Totally agree there is zero budget for a CB this summer less they can play LB as well. Which as we know, there aren't many and none available.
Baleba even filled in at CB last season when Van Hecke injured, little bit like Shaw has done before

Yeh, I expect to see Baleba to be used tactically or in an emergency as a left back. There's definitely a tactical advantage to be had in certain games to have a player who can transition from fullback into central midfield. Lewis-Skelly, O Reilly, Valverde, Slobzs have shown the benefit.

I think he is not a clear upgrade on any current CBs. If we go for a starting CB next season we'd need to go after a better player. As a suqad option, totally fine.

Who would be your ideal CB signing?

I don’t know much about Tapsoba but the bar is just not that high.
De Ligt and Martinez are usually injured, or maybe suspended, so no need to think about them. Then we have two inexperienced youngsters in Heaven and Yoro, talented but inexperienced youngsters nontheless.
As far as experienced starting level cbs go, we only have Maguire atm. He is good but not crazy good. We can only hope that Yoro and/or Heaven grows fast and has a breakout season

I am confident we can find a couple next summer

There are some rumors that Scalvini is available for 40-50m. Newcastle, Spurs and Chelsea around him. Would love to get him.

CB probably not a priority vs LB but would be great to sign him.

Robert Renan is the best young CB in Brazil and precisely the profile we need. He also spent around half of his youth career playing in LB.

He's my #1 choice for CB that's both gettable/affordable and not premier league proven.

Will never happen unfortunately.

De Ligt was our best defender before injury. I don't trust him to be ready and back to his best anytime soon but maybe he can be like a new signing.

All depends how De ligt and how his operation went, if it was successful and by all reports it was then that could be the end of the back issues and that is what kept him sidelined.
I would be all up for getting a 24/25yo athletic CB in and get a decent price on Lisandro to facilitate that though.

Only way we get one is if they are LB who can play CB too

Ousmane Diomande was available for £35m and we let him go to Forest. For a club that loves a market opportunity we sure seem to miss out on an awful lot.

It's the whole PL proven thing, it's definitely a take the board is sticking too. Plus we thought we'd have time to get another CB. Martinez and De Ligt can't get back fast enough. With them two back Maguire becomes the 5th option.

This would be the perfect kind of signing, he could develop at LB, with the view of moving to CB when he's ready. Covering both positions. Is he fast?

Oumar Solet who plays at Udinese. He's 26 years old, he's 6ft4 and. He's got 1 year left in his contract. He's very fast, he's decent with the ball and he's good in air.

But Martinez and De Ligt arent that good either .

I think for RCB, we have both Yoro and De Ligt for long term. De Ligt did very well last season. If this season De Ligt can stay injury free, I think we might be okay for RCB for next season.

For left footed CB, keep eye on Bastoni as his contract expired in 2028. If he doesn't sign new contract until next year, he could be available.

Dream signing who cost lot will be Willian Pacho.

I haven't watch Muharemovic, he's a left footed CB just signed by Leeds, he will be in my watchlist.

No new incomings till we get rid of the ones here. Most likely Maguire, Licha and De Ligt (depending on recovery) next summer.
Really hope we see more of Yoro and Heaven as a pairing this year.

Yeah that explains the lack of links to any this summer

None of our current CB or FB options were “prem proven” when we signed them except Harry and Shaw.

Might have saved us a few mismatches tbh.

Crazy that a team that wanted to play three at the back can’t even pull together a reliable back 2 with experience and the required qualities for the Premier league.

I really hope we see some improvement out of these two.

Yeah, not really sure what people are seeing currently. I'm a big Heaven fan as well, but I don't see either of them as first teamers right now - certainly not starters.

We need some experienced CB's next summer

Both Maguire & Martinez are OOC next summer.

De Ligt will depend on how his season goes, probably moved on or stay for 12 months depending on his fitness.

I think we will sign 2 CBs next summer, maybe 3 depending on Yoro and Heavens performances.

We will renew Martinez after a few good performances towards the end of the season

Would seem like we are on track for replacing the backline next season, very strange approach to do a different 3rd every summer

We have an option on Martinez's current contract that we will 150% exercise to protect his value if we cant agree a new deal. Personally, i would just exercise it now, see how he does and if its another injury prone season....sell next summer.

It's one of those for me, we clearly needed an attack after that season where we finished 15th.

Our midfield was non existent at time last year, doesn't mean we couldn't sign a fullback or two, sadly we have 5 CBs on the books already would just be a huge amount of wages on one area.

Hopefully we are planning for a back 4 upgrade next year, then can plug any previous holes we have.
