Why are we looking at cbs that are worse than the ones we already have? If we're getting a cb we should be targeting quality, not just squad depth.
I'm not sure if we're deliberately doing it that way, or if it's just because of how contracts and needs have happened. Last season we HAD to completely rip up that atrocious attack and completely rebuild it, which was also helped by actually having options to sell those attackers. Then this season it's obvious that midfield had to be by far the biggest priority due to Casemiro's contract expiring and Ugarte basically playing himself out of even sub appearances (and now being injured for most of the season) leaving us with only one real midfield option. Then next season Shaw and Maguire will be out of contract, we'll have a better idea whether De Ligt has been able to get over his injury and whether Yoro and Heaven look like they're ready to step up, so it does appear defence will have to take priority.
This is absolutely nonsense. We ain’t signing a CB when we can’t even get a LB. We will rebuild our defence next season… they will cost us a lot this season but it’s unfortunate that we needed a midfield rebuild at the same time.

It's the fullback for me that I feel shouldve been addressed alongside the attackers as we have all the prem proven attackers up there now with no support from Shaw or Dalot, but i agree the areas we have strengthened needed it, just wish we had of been more forward in getting a starting Left & Right back
Do you feel like we'd have done more if we had sold more? Its completely criminal we are in the position we are with poor squad depth and having to buy in only 3 players at a time due to poor management of transfers in seasons prior
Think I saw in a podcast we are rumoured to be looking for a CB that can play LB. Which would line up with the Lukeba links. Vivel pushing it and rumoured to be 55 mil euros.
I’d probably prefer him as a CB option but guess he could be a back up incase Shaw folds until next season and look for a proper LB and use him and put Lukeba back to primarily a CB.
I thought it was the other way around as we have Shaw & Martinez who can cover LCB, but neither are good enough for LB

Chelsea have shown time and time again that if there’s a good offer for an academy player they’d take it and although I’ve only seen a little of Acheampong I’ve heard he’s potentially very good all round as he’s big but very quick and good on the ball
Sign someone who can play CB and LB
Dalot's final ball is normally poor but he does support the attack quite well in terms of his runs, positioning and his build-up from deeper areas (where he does make the occasional mistake but overall he's much better than many people make out). It's why his goal+assist tally is normally decent (not great, but decent) despite his bad final ball, as he gets in those positions more than most. If he ever actually sorted out his end product he'd be a real attacking weapon, but he's at the age now that I doubt that will happen unfortunately.
I don't think we have poor squad depth over most of the field other than leftback. We have plenty of options across the attacking positions, we've rebuilt the midfield, we have plenty of options at CB and we have two decent options at RB (maybe three if Yoro's preseason performances are anything to go by). In an ideal world I do think we would have switched out some of those current options for others that would bring a better balance in attack, there are question marks over whether the first choice in some positions is good enough, and at CB we have a strange group where they are all injury prone, too old or too young. But we do have the depth to cover each spot.
Even leftback we technically have the numbers, but I'd say the quality of those options all the way from our first choice all the way down the list is a real issue.
We still have a few days left of the window before I judge it. I'd like a better option at striker, but with Sesko, Mbeumo, Cunha and Rashford (with other quality options able to play their normal positions) I think we can handle another season without one. Likewise at CB, where if we did buy somebody in their prime we'd probably have to loan out one of Yoro or Heaven for them to get gametime. The one position I am most worried about is LB, but that's also the one that we're most rumoured to be looking to strengthen. If we get a good option in at LB (either a straight up first choice pushing Shaw down the pecking order, or a good second choice who can be trusted to play a lot of games) I'll ultimately be happy with what we did this window with the funds available. Well, perhaps I should say I'll be happy with the general plan of this window in terms of positions prioritised; I do have a nagging worry that we got the midfield balance wrong with not enough athleticism but I'll wait to see how that plays out.

Completely agree....weve two top cbs with injury issues, two of the most promising young ones in europe and a very experienced one.
Think these stories are nonsense anyway. We wont be buying a cb until next year, its not even about budget and prorities.
Maguire will go, we will be assessing if deligt has a future here from injuries, assesing the same with martinez and if he gets another contract. Also assesing if yoro and/or heavem have progressed enough to be our first choices....a lot to consider for deciding what we wish to sign....one thing for surw, as you state none of these names improve us at all

He's said that often. He wants a centre back who can also be deployed at RB. Scholes wants two new centre backs, straight into the first XI. This will be the focus this season, as midfield has been for the last couple of seasons. And it will be evident soon that we need two starters, unless either Yoro or Heaven truly excel this season.
That’s what the pundits and commentators will have to say this season. Before last season, they say our attacks is not good enough, the last season the midfield is not good enough, the legs are not there, and now we have defensive problems. Everyone that watch United knows that we have many holes that needs upgrading and fixed, everyone knows that we can’t fix everything at once just a matter of we fixed multiple areas one window or just one big area one window. We have done the multiple areas to little to no avail. So change to what we seen from last season. Oh, and everyone should know and noted down on their head now that, yes, we are broke, the club is broke because after 10-15 yrs of wasted, neglected, reckless spending. We have to learn how to think twice before committing to singings as our room of making error is small. Our owners don’t want to spend much of their own money and they are just less rich compare to other owners or just less prioritised than others.
Would say they are awful combo of less cash rich and less prioritised unfortunately. We are completely broke due to ownership and as you say 10-15 years of spending money on the wrong players. I guess all we can do is pray for a miracle this season and next summer we sign at least 1 CB
It is what it is, I have made peace with that. Most of the choices, we made were the wrong ones and it lead to what it is today. Right now, we have Ineos at least try to do it right, whether they will keep making good and right choices, remains to be seen. We have no other choices but be restraint and using our finite resources wisely because of our ineptitude from years ago. Changes takes time and efforts. Rather than moaning and complain every minute in every posts, we should just chill out a bit, go out have a nice beer or two with friends. There is more than football especially with all the shenanigans inside football right now.
Yeah his top speed is registered at 34.8 km/h making him one of the fastest CB's in the league. For comparison Yoro is 33.9, De Ligt 31.9, Maguire is 29.7- Among FB's Shaw is 34.4, Dalot is the only regular defender who has a higher registered top speed at 35.7.
Put's up great numbers but no top club wants to touch him due to having a terrible attitude apparently.
If we cannot sign our first choice LB which seems to be Hall and the club is committed to going back for him next summer then it makes perfect sense to sign a LCB if we can this window.

Wild goose chase. We're not buying a CB when the vastly greater need is LB and it's not at all clear that we'll address that vastly greater need.
Another player who would have fit this LCB/LB hybrid profile nicely was Honest Ahanor who is on his way to Chelsea (via a very weird loan at Palace this season by the looks of it).
Sounds good, but isn't he on loan at Vasco de Gama from Zenit until December?
It is quite peculiar that the club does these briefings. Will it help them in the market? Hardly. It didn't help this time around and we've given every other club looking for centre backs (and left backs, possibly right backs too) a heads up that we're in that market.
Anyhow, I hope we go for Kayode at right back, Hall at left back, and a monster CB who can play 45-50 games per season and organise the defense, take charge of it. Bastoni will be 28 next year, but I'd love for us to sign him. Scalvini is highly rated and fits the profile, but he's had one or two significant injuries. Rafa Marin is also highly rated.
