Doubt we'll for Rice as he'd be extremely overpriced.

Shaw can be good on the ball when he's in the mood, but I think the RB position needs to be addressed. Dalot and AWB won't cut it.

Ideally it'd be good to invest in a Right forward, a RB, 2 CMs, and a CB. I know it's too much, but considering the expected exodus I think it might happen. It'd be great if Hannibal can make it.
Rice is a Glazer target you just know it, whether we like it or not. Shaws attitude stinks and I dont think Ten Hag will put up with him tbh.

Realistically, I hope he can work with players currently at the club. Perhaps Amad on right winger, Sancho on the left. Bring VDB back into the fold. Utilise Dalot's crossing ability. With the right coaching, tactics and a motivated squad. 2-3 players should be good enough. 1 establish DM, 1 striker and CB/RB/CM. Hopefully Rashfod get rejuvenated with ETH. Drop Maguire, let Varane and Lindeloft partner in defense. Laird, Gardner and Hannibal gets a look in for XI including Pellestri. Lastly, clean house. There isn't a need to have so many players.

Think this is a realistic summer. We need to realise transfers and squad changing is going to take much longer than 1 summer regardless of who comes in, but especially if ETH comes in as expected.

New striker - Nunez/Jonathan David
Midfielder - Konrad Laimer
DM - No idea but not spunking over 100m on Rice
DC - Timber

RW - If there is any money combined with sales, maybe a new rw this summer or next
RB - Not sure if it will be this summer or next
LB - Not sure if it will be this summer or next
 new DM not Rice....still thats not a bad shout cheers

I like Laimer too.

Wheres your academy player?

Nothing outrageous about that. Telles isn't very good, nor does he possess the capabilities Ten Hag wants in his full backs, who essentially act as play makers when Ajax are on the ball. Though ultimately I don't think ETH would fancy either of them since their positional discipline is naive at best. But I agree, I feel he'd persist with Shaw at first.
Yeah over time he'll upgrade over Shaw but it won't happen in the first summer. I wouldn't be surprised if ten Hag has Shaw playing at the level he played at last season. He has the qualities to thrive in ten Hag's system.

You dont think he will take anyone from Ajax? All the talk from the tier 1 dutch lads is that he wants Timber and Anthony
I think he will, both are very logical options but Timber wouldn't be a starter for example. He's a high potential player but he's only 20. He'd be probably rotation at RB or CB along with Lindelof. Antony would be a starter at RW, but the price quotes at the moment are huge for him, so hard to say he'll be moving this summer. I'm sure we'll try though.

Like I said, I think we'll have a new starter at ST, DM and possibly/hopefully RW. I don't think we really urgently need starters anywhere else, we have players who mesh with each other stylistically everywhere else and I think they can just be coached to improve collectively, assuming we do actually get a ST/RW/DM. My hopes for those 3 would be something like:
  • ST - Gerard Moreno. Yes he's 30, but he's a fantastic ball playing forward and he's excellent with his link up/hold up play and would make us a better footballing side for a few years while we continue to evaluate the position.
  • RW - Antony. Will be hard because of cost, but profile wise he seems to tick all the boxes.
  • DM - Boubacar Kamara. A RW and ST won't be cheap. Balance that out by getting a high potential player who is ready to come in, but on a free. Leaves pressure off him, and if still a problem then spend big on Rice in 2023 when we are more settled and Rice is cheaper.
Past them, likely just squad players. Henderson is likely gone, so i think we sign Johnstone to be backup. Or if Henderson is made started then De Gea is made backup. Someone like Timber as a depth/future option for CB/RB. Being realistic, I can see this being the main 11 and backup 11 next season, with the rest essentially being sold/loaned/released or some youth just being added depth.

Gerard
Bruno Sancho Antony
Fred Kamara
Shaw Varane Maguire Dalot
De Gea

Martial
Rashford Van de Beek Elanga
Matic McTominay
Telles Lindelof Timber Wan Bissaka

Garner, Amad, Laird, Mengi, Pellistri need more loans. Hannibal maybe to stay to be a creative depth player. Can't see Martial leaving for a few reasons (no buyers, no striker depth anyway, Ten Hag might like his hold up play and get a tune out of him). Ten Hag will keep VdB for 1 more season at least. You're right. Players like Timber, Dest, Mazraoui only made starting XI because of injuries/absences. They may have made the first team on talent, but that's not the reason they play. Ten Hag is a bit too "loyal" to his starting XI. But those injuries will happen, youth players will get a chance, more than they do now. But he's not that youth focused, may only seem that way because the Ajax academy produces first team players every year.
Thats how most youth players get their chances though. Its the sticking with them that counts surely?

I have this horrible feeling for Donny that even with his old manager in charge he wont be up to it. I hope im wrong but I guess we shall see.

Don't get me wrong, i'd love Rice! I just think he will cost an extortionate amount and stop us from making other signings that we need because of the price, I feel there are cheaper alternatives. If you could guarantee we get Rice and it makes no impact on the rest of our spending i'd take Rice anyday

Got Hannibal, Garner and Laird in there, toyed with the idea of Garnacho but not 100% sure on that. Maybe Fernandez at LB?

Tbh I think we'll be a bit fecked if Ronaldo stays next season. He's never been much good up top, and he's too old to be a LW now. Has way too many problems to his game and I don't think we can actually get a good harmony in a rebuild with Ten Hag if he stays. Like of course he is a good player to look up to with his professionalism about the sport, but he's not going to be content during a rebuild process that he doesn't fit into at all. So if Ten Hag comes in and has to force Ronaldo in the lineup... It's already a bad start IMO.

Yeah, it's a pretty normal way to go about it, very few managers are like Van Gaal who just throw in random youngsters and stick with it. Even Sir Alex. He had the class of 92 break through, and since them, who were the best United young players to break through (who weren't purchased to be a first team player like Rooney or Ronaldo)? Brown? Fletcher? O'Shea? He stuck with Neville/Giggs/Scholes over some others probably too much in some cases. So I don't have a problem with it really, but it just can't be Mourinho level where the youth or any young player even if proven is a complete disconnect.

Can't see us spending more than £50m net this summer so some of these lineups are a bit fanciful unfortunately.

I can see something like this for 22/23:

Sancho (Rashford) - New Striker (Ronaldo) - Rashford (Elanga)
Bruno (VDB) - Fred (McT)
New DM (Garner)
Shaw (Telles) - Maguire (Lindelof) - Varane (new CB) - New RB (Dalot)
De Gea (new GK)
Then evolving into this for 23/24:

Sancho (Rashford) - New Striker (Youth) - New RW (Youth)
Bruno (New CM) - New CM (Fred)
New DM (Garner)
Shaw (New LB) - New CB (Lindelof) - Varane (new CB) - New RB (Dalot)
New GK (new GK)
As for names, I have no idea - hopefully a load of shrewd signings that don't cost a bomb but do fit into a clear system.

You are all excluding DVB from your lineups for some reason, but I think he will find a way to fit him in. No idea where though, I guess in more advanced CM position in front of a new DM, maybe instead of Fred.

Possibly Antony gets swapped for Ousmane Dembele depending on who the club go for.

I see something like this as being likely. Something tells me Maguire will still be around next season.

Yeah, it's a normal way to go at it for most clubs. But not that normal for Ajax. If a youth player is just better than the starting playing in his position, why wait until an injury comes around. Goalkeepers excluded of course, nobody is going to change a functioning goalkeeper.

But it might just be that i'm used to how Ajax does things that make it feel like Ten Hag is a bit too safe with bringing on youngsters.

He needs to get some real footballers if he wants to play some real football.

One of the first things I’d imagine him wanting is a much more complete goalkeeper than we currently have. Someone like Robert Sanchez, Anthony Lopes or Lukas Hradecky would be revolutionary for the team. We even looked a much better team with Dean Henderson in goal, and he’s hardly world class based on current evidence.

Then we need a right-back who looks like a Premier League footballer. I wish we had someone like Matty Cash instead of the dross we have there. Our left-backs are passable at best, unless there is a new Luke Shaw renaissance.

Our central defence and midfield hardly look convincing either and we need a new striker. And our wingers can’t currently keep the possession to save their lives.

We have many, many players we need to get rid of.

My favourite two Dutch analysts/pundits (Suleyman Ozturk and Pieter Zwart of Voetbal International) agree with me that he's doomed to fail (sadly behind a paywall here: https://www.vi.nl/pro/waarom-de-overstap-van-ten-hag-naar-united-gedoemd-is-te-mislukken in a 37 minute video going through the United squad)

They say that United has too many specialists in particular positions and too little footballing ability throughout. That centrebacks are the one place United don't need to spend money, with Maguire and Varane both having qualities for a Ten Hag side and even Lindelöf having qualities that would look better in a Ten Hag side.

But that Ten Hag would basically need basically a clean slate for the team and a billion euros to spend and even then wouldn't be able to compete with the level City and Liverpool are at, and hence he's doomed to fail whatever he does.

Basically they need, according to this video, 3 new goalkeepers, completely new fullbacks, completely new centremids, and a completely new front-line except Sancho, as well as a new structure at the club

I think I'm right in saying VDB played as #6, #8 and #10 for ETH at different points so you'd think he'd get significant gametime somewhere alright.

I know there are doubts about whether VDB is good enough generally but if you're ETH arriving at the club and trying to get your ideas across then having a midfielder around who has already spent years playing for you is too valuable to pass up.

I dont know why people keep mentioning Fred as a DM. He isn't and he won't be playing there again.

We will sign a CB (Akanji or Kilman or Timber)

Kamara and Philips would be our DM (going by reports)

Sancho, Bruno and Antony/Nkunku/Raphinha.

Darwin or any new striker.

30 + 50 + 60 + 60 = 200m .

--‐----------Darwin-----------------
Sancho - Bruno - Raphinha
‐----Kamara - Philips ----
Shaw- Akanji - Varane- Dalot

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
To me the full backs are still not up to quality but I think he would pick the two best players on the ball. I cannot see him liking Shaw or AWB at all.
Shaw is absolutely miles better than Telles on the ball.

Other than not trusting his right foot to do anything but stand on, Shaw is brilliant on the ball for a fullback. Probably has the best first touch on the team and is a very good passer, and last season at least he also showed he could be a very good crosser. If he gets his shit together he's literally one of the best left backs in the world. He's one that I'm looking forward to seeing if Ten Hag (if he is the manager) can get into that form consistently, and if not then it's time to write him off.

He offers more than Shaw including the ability to actually cross the fecking ball into the box.
Telles just hits and hopes with his crosses. He puts a huge amount in there but almost all of them are to no-one. He has 2 assists in in 20 matches this season. Shaw, despite being in shit form, has 5 in 27.

Easily. Telles offers nothing. We need new fullbacks.

Shaw has good technique and has shown the ability to progress the play up the pitch well. He is a lazy, passive and seemingly entitled player. Maybe ETH can get the best out of him. No other full back is remotely near good enough, I struggle to see a future for AWB, he should look to move for the sake of his own career and professional pride.

I agree with this. Raphinha won't be cheap if Leeds stay up so not a cheaper option than Antony but Raphinha is PL proven. Nkunku is having a great season and is very versatile but more expensive than Moreno obviously. However, this team will be miles off City and Pool and will have to fight for 4th.

This is what I expect our starting XI to look like but I have no idea who our signings will be at this stage. I've got a feeling that Ten Hag will try to bring Alvarez and Antony with him.

I'm also really surprised by this. DVB was an instrumental part of ten hags Ajax, he was the engine of that midfield.

A midfield 3 of Bruno. Donny and a competent DM style player could work.

I watched a lot of Sporting in the build up to us signing Bruno and he was always much deeper than he is for us. Granted, he is an attacking player but he can play a central midfield role. He's used incorrectly for me - too far up - no emphasis on midfield play etc.

Little changes to style of play and emphasis on player roles could transform us.

2 attacking full backs and a midfield 3 that can work/play and control games and we'd instantly look a better team.

Likes of Kamara on a free can't be ignored for me - but our central midfield is way off for me. Someone like Fred needs to be a good rotation option rather than a starter, McTominey is so far off the standard a squad role looks a stretch. Matic can't run and i'm so sick of the Pogba debates he's certain to leave.

Ten Hag does seem to like a workhorse as a central striker with good hold up play - Eg. Haller. I'm baffled by who we would target there. Maybe Haller? Ronaldo and Cavani can't do it and Rashford/Martial look to be more suited to the LW, where i'm sure Sancho will be the main man anyway.

I'd love for us to just start fresh.

Henderson to be given a chance (DDG is a club legend, he's elite. But he's stale and like cement on his line - we need a modern keeper)
Dalot could come good within the right set up, he can attack to some degree.
End of the Pogba drama. Lingard/Martial gone. Jones/Mata gone. Matic to an extremely reduced role.

I've got a hunch that certain players will come on under Ten Hag,
Henderson
Dalot
Sancho
Donny

Garner could be in or around the squad, Hannibal too.

Literally Cant tell you. Think he will play 433. Think we will get rid of the out of contract players and the crocks - plus anyone obvious like Bailly, Jones. I’d also sell the likes of Dalot and Telles who arent good enough, we wont make a huge loss on and will actually fetch some cash. If we are clever we will sell henderson and make heaton no2 to raise funds, stuff like that. I think we are more likely to fill up the squad with the youth players than sign loads and loads of players. And i think a lot of our out of form guys will be back at the races.

With 3 new starters and a good pre season below wbe an ok start to what will be a several year project.

De Gea
Dalot - Varane - Maguire - Shaw
Bruno - New Signing - Fred
New Signing - New Signing - Sancho
This is what I expect our starting XI to look like but I have no idea who our signings will be at this stage. I've got a feeling that Ten Hag will try to bring Alvarez and Antony with him.
Would love someone like Timber as well to compete at RB and offer back up at CB as but broadly this is what I'd expect.

I think I'm right in saying VDB played as a #6, #8 and #10 under ETH so I guess he'd feature in regularly enough in midfield over the course of the season. I'd be surprised if ETH didn't want to keep a midfielder who already knows what he wants around.

Telles just hits and hopes with his crosses. He puts a huge amount in there but almost all of them are to no-one. He has 2 assists in in 20 matches this season. Shaw, despite being in shit form, has 5 in 27.
We are just going to have to agree that you are wrong mate

This would cost circa £300m+. Maybe over two windows something like this is possible though.
