I think Ederson and Tchouameni will be it.

Could see a Joao Palhinha loan if we can't get Tchouameni. He looked pretty slow and he can't really pass but one season wouldn't kill us and he would provide some of the leadership, defending and set piece threat Casemiro gave us. Probably wouldn't be much better than the Amrabat or Sabitzer loans but makes more sense than coughing up 50M for Berge (not a bad DM, 50M would be fine if he was 22 and not 28) on deadline day. Then spend big on a Scott or Wharton I guess with the money saved.

Most of the time we'd have a responsible veteran next to the kid we expect to make up for their lack of creativity. Can use both young players against weaker teams or when we're chasing a game.
We're never not going to need a player of Wharton's style. Mainoo and Ederson don't provide his line-breaking passing, and maybe post-Bruno we end up looking like Wharton-DM-Mainoo with the hope being it looks like Kroos-Casemiro-Modric stylistically with Wharton as the Kroos passing #8 who sits and gives you a block of 6 defensive players against counters, a new DM to be our Casemiro (no idea who this would be, hadn't heard of Casemiro before he went to Madrid and was loaned to Porto) and Mainoo expected to create and get some freedom like Modric did as a sort of #8/#10 hybrid.
I haven't seen much of Smit or Stiller but they seem to be discussed as similar passing #8 types who don't need to run out of position to progress the ball?

My kingdom for Tchouameni along with Ederson. My money is on Ederson, Scott and a C-list (Adams/Berge).
The two midfielders will be “great value in this market” and “bargain”.
Maybe Granit Xhaka. But considering how our board is performing, even that might be too positive prediction. This summer will be a massive fail.
The club has lost their main two targets + Tonali and that after promising the fans huge investment in CM. Tchouameni is the dream signing. He's a big name signing a French international/Real Madrid player and a great replacement for Casemiro. United can overspend on him without looking silly. Though it much depend on Real wanting to sell. Alex Scott is the most realistic target of the lot. He probably wants to move, we're the only one capable of offering him regular football and his step sister is already in the house. He's the type of signing that our spin doctors can work with. Baleba isn't liked by the fans and Brighton won't nudge on the price. United can't spin the guy as the marquee signing. Berge makes sense tactically but god knows if Fulham would sell on a realistic price. If I am a betting man I'd say Scott and then someone between Tchouameni, Camavinga or Kone ie someone the club can spin as a big signing that fits the INEOS philosophy
Tchouameni and Natan De Cat would be my wishlist after missing out on our other apparent targets. De Cat would be a great understudy, he's that good.

Every piece of data I’ve seen, combined with the eye test, points to Aurélien Tchouaméni as the best possible partner for Mainoo. He has almost the ideal profile.

A fee in the region of £100m and wages close to £300k per week would be justified if it means signing one of the world’s very best in his position. Players of that calibre rarely become available when they’re entering their prime at just over 25 years of age.
Regardless of our reported interest in Fernandes or Tonali, I struggle to see better value for money than Aurélien Tchouaméni.
If we were to sign a third midfielder as well, my first choice would be Bruno Guimarães, although I fully appreciate how unrealistic that is. My second choice would actually be Sander Berge. In my opinion, he’s a very underrated team player with the age, experience and mentality to be an excellent third or fourth midfield option in a top squad.
Based on previous comments from INEOS, neither Bruno G nor Berge are likely to be realistic targets. But if you put age and resale value to one side and focus purely on building the strongest possible squad capable of competing on all fronts, I think both would fit that role extremely well.

- calm and composed in the build-up
- a very good passer without needing to dominate possession

Isn't Mainoo and Tchouameni a poor combination? Both are quite slow and they don't cover a lot of ground. At least Ederson has pace and is more aggressive. I think Mainoo and Scott is a decent combination.

I don’t know what world people are living in here. The only reason we’ll get either of them is if Madrid think they’re both washed.

This is what I've been thinking too. Bit of a risk paying big for Scott with his injury record, but he is a class player. Berge a solid choice and an under-rated player.

There's a lot of talk about Real not wanting to sell Tchouameni or that he is a Mourinho type player. If Real can get £80m and get Rodri with spare change, they will absolutely take that. The problem is: can Tchouameni be convinced/happy to play for us. We don't want another De Maria situation, I don't think he ever wanted to come to us.

Seems like he wants over £350k per week, so it's a non starter. But without my rose tinted glasses on, I really struggle to understand why he would choose to leave Real and come to us. We're nowhere near challenging and I struggle to imagine we are an exciting prospect for top players right now. So the only reason he'd come here, in my opinion, is if we were the best choice of any club that was willing to pay the huge amounts of money that would be involved. Basically a potential Di Maria situation, as you said.
If he goes, I think he'll end up at PSG or City if they sell Rodri.

No where near challenging? Our form for the last 17 games of the season was the best in the league (granted we only played league games) and beat the league winners at their own ground amongst others.
If this had been any other team in that form (say Liverpool), we'd have been worried about them for the upcoming season. Especially if (big if!) they add someone like Tchouameni.

I’d say Tchouameni and Scott would probably be favourites but given the prices probably involved I wonder if Ineos would rather gamble on the likes of Camara, Sangare, Bouaddi ,Smitt, DeCat, Manzambi, Yirenki or someone like that.

Yes but we’ve done that before with DiMaria, Varane and Casemiro. Two of them were disasters.
