I’ll play.

I’d want us to start by being a bit brutal and getting rid of anyone who doesn’t play, doesn’t fit the manager’s system and doesn’t want to be here, and also have no ludicrously expensive bench warmers - DDG, Darmian, Valencia, Rojo, Herrera, Pogba, Mata, Lukaku, Sanchez, Bailly

I’d also like us to reduce the size of the squad and only sign players who are excited to be here and aren’t wannabe galacticos as I’m sick of the egos. And definitely get in some attaching players who can score / create

GK: Romero, Pereira, Grant (Henderson back out on loan)

FB: Dalot, Shaw, Young, Another right back, possibly Meunier who seems to be linked a lot just now

CB: Lindelof, Smalling, Jones, Tuanzebe, An experienced leader at the back - Alderweireld if he’s still keen

CM: Fred, Matic, McTominay, Pereira, Garner, At least one more who is comfortable on the ball and can dictate play, maybe Tielemens

AM: big reinforcements needed here. Lingard, Chong and Gomes and then who? Maybe Pepe, Bergwijn, Van de Beek?

ST: Rashford, Martial, Greenwood

Definitely no title challenge in that team but would go some way to rebalancing the squad and being able to play to Ole’s alleged preferred tactics of energy and pressing.

He had a release clause at Leicester. He would have gone for a lot more if he didn’t. £32m was not market value for him, and everyone knew it. You cannot use that as a barometer. Following his move he went onto win the league, and generally acknowledged as one of the best midfielders in the league, if not the world. His form hasn’t dropped, he’s been played out of position.

Utd wouldn’t be able to get Kante for anything under £60m. Chelsea faced a backlash over selling Matic, they would be very reticent to do so again, especially for such a popular player.

Profit/ loss on a player is irrelevant, what they previously sold for is not a barometer of their future worth.
We’d maybe have to hope Sarri wasn’t paying much attention to Kante before he became Chelsea manager, and doesn’t really see him fitting into his system.

Alternatively, if we really want him it might be worth paying what it takes within reason.

Interesting to look at Kante though. Turned 28 in March and he has 4 years remaining on a £290K/week contract (media estimates) I’d love us to get him but it is pie in the sky when you look at the facts.

However, should Chelsea struggle balancing the books it’s an extraordinary wage he’s on, but again only recently signed so it’s unlikely to change.

Also worth remembering Sancho left City to get a starting spot, so he's more likely to move to a team where that s still guaranteed.

Rashford Felix Sancho
Pogba Rice Herrera
Shaw De Ligt Lindelof AWB
De Gea
I'd be praying for this line up if I was a Utd fan! Playing felix as a false 9
I've never seen Felix play so can't comment, but if we were to play with a false 9, then I'd want more of a wide forward than a winger. Sancho, as good as he's been, tends to drift wide to cross it when he's on the right. I'd personally be looking for more of a player that has that makes more runs in between full back and centre as illustrated below. Also, I'd ideally prefer someone who is left footed.

I like Rice and think he will go on to be a fantastic defensive midfielder, but to me, we should be targeting a deep-lying playmaker. If say we were to get Rice and have Herrera as our box to box with Pogba playing in between the lines, then who out of Herrera and Rice will set the tempo of the game? It's too defence orientated and would often mean Pogba dropping too deep to create.

Having a deep-lying playmaker would allow us to control games better and create chances from deep, thus meaning our forwards + Pogba can focus on runs in behind or playing in between the lines.

Is setting the tempo of a game really a thing though?

Or are there a few players who can set the tempo of a game by virtue of how they play and how they’re used? Ordinarily there isn’t one guy in a game controlling the speed and nature of a football match.

Your ‘dream eleven’ has a centre back playing at right back? And has Matic in it? And Rojo is still in the squad?

More of a nightmare really

If you look at our current options, there's a lot of work to be done.

The players we have that are good enough: De Gea, Shaw, Lindelof, Pogba...
We have players with potential: Martial, Rashford, McTominay, Dalot, Bailly, Peirera
Then we have some experienced players who at one point were the required standard, and can contribute, but not for a full season: Matic, Mata.
Kids coming through...

I don't know if we can be sure about signing enough of the first bracket players to make the difference this summer.

So I'd suggest signing potential, and a few experienced players who can contribute.

Let go: Lukaku, Sanchez, Rojo, Valencia, and unfortunately Herrera.

Bring in: Wan-Bassaka (£40m), Tierney (£40m), Godin (Free), Kai Havertz (£60m), Hector Herrera (Free), Rabiot (Free), and if we could get our hands on any of Sancho, Felix, or Sane... of course we go for it.

Line-up:

De Gea, Wan-Bassaka, Lindelof, Godin, Shaw, Tierney, Rabiot, Pogba, Havertz, Rashford, Martial

The question here is predict reality rather than what I want isn’t it?

Prediction:

Romero
Young - Lindelof - Smalling - Shaw
McTominay - Matic - Fred
Lingard - Rashford - Martial

“No value in the market” will be the catchphrase for this summer. Unless your Real Madrid, who’ll find some great value signings in our squad when we let them have De Gea and Pogba for relative peanuts.

Sell Sanchez, Pogba, Lukaku and Martial. Let Herrera and Mata leave. That's a bit more than 250 mil freed up.

With that money, get Van de Beek, Bruno, Rice and Felix.

I would go get Pepe (70 mil) from Lille, with the help from the sale of Bailly, Rojo, Darmian and Jones which comes up to about 50 mil.

For the backline, get Manolas, Toby, and Meunier or AWB, which would cost around 100 mil. Manolas and Toby are cheap but better than what we have.

If we sell De Gea, get someone cheaper like Cillesen, Onana or Navas, and get an extra attacker.

Ah, forgot to mention that.. With .2 itb, any big upgrades are not happening.

Did Foster -> Guaita.

Is this a prediction, or a wishlist? 9 new players in the starting XI?

Romero - Looks more than capable to be our No.1 if there's a decent defence infront of him.

AWB
Toby
Lindelof
Shaw
-- We can get Toby on the cheap and give him a 2-3 year contract while we steady the ship. AWB, Lindelof and Shaw looks to have at least 5-6 years in them but of course they might not stay that long.

McTominay
Fred
Tielemans/Maddison
Pogba/Neves
-- Ole seems to favor a diamond MF , or 4 in the middle like the United teams he played in. Cant see any RM or RW that is reasonably priced and willing to come though. So McT at the bottom of the diamond, Pogba or Maddison at the top. Cant see Leicester letting us have both Tielemans and Maddison though, so if Pogba decides to leave then we should get Neves and Maddison. Good FK specialist as well.

Rashford
Dybala --
A little tricky here for me as i dont see Martial and Lukaku being in Ole plans. Martial doesnt seem to have the right attitude while Lukaku is... just Lukaku. Might give Lukaku the benefit of the doubt and could be useful if we want to mix things up a little.

Subs
Henderson/Pereira - Henderson as 1st choice back up if he is willing play the cup games
Dalot - cover for rb/lb and also could use him in a RW if needed.
Smalling - still decent enough to be on our bench
Pereira
Lingard
Lukaku

It's funny that 90% of the teams posted here are arguably as bad or worse than our current one.

Shown how unlikely it is we will have a good summer or season. Depressing

Team won't change much. The club will spend all summer chasing unrealistic fees for our deadwood. It won't work. We'll be forced to hold on to players we don't want and the bean counters will therefore stop us signing replacements. We are screwed.

Tielemans is only on loan at Leicester so he would be coming from Monaco.

I love Ole, but he is showing all of his tactical weaknesses by continuing with a Diamond formation in the PL. The team becomes incredibly narrow and relies on width coming from the full back positions who both must have incredible high energy levels.

The creativity needs to come from the No 10 and you need more goals from midfield. In short we simply do not have the personel to play this formation. We would need to buy Ben Chillwell and Cancello to compete with Dalot and Shaw just for the wing back positions. United would then need at least one new Elite CB like Koulibaly who can cover the left side with pace when the wing back overloads. We would also need a new starting enforcer like Declan Rice, Idris Guyue or N'didi and 2 mobile box to box no 8's that score 20 goals between them and track back like Fernandez or Tielemans.

Finally the club would need to recruite a marque player like Felix or Dybala for the No 10 role and then you would need an out and out quality Centre Forward like Cavani as well.

So this type of major overhaul, even with Pogba, Herrera, Sanchez, Rojo, Darmian, Mata, Martial, Valencia all leaving and maybe recouping £240M would still mean that club would have to spend another £200M because 6 or 7 players of that quality would cost £420M+!

More and more it's starting to seem that Ole is still playing Football Manager and although he only has our best intentions at heart, Woodward is just telling him what he wants to hear while the snake that is Ed Woodward is already looking at recruiting his 5th Manager in 7 years!!!

First 11 Europa League & Cups
De Gea S Romero

Cancello* A Tuanzebe
Linderlof C Smalling
T Audweireld* E Baily
Shaw D Dalot

D Rice* N Matic
Y Tielemans* Fred
J Lingard S McTominay

P Dyballa* D James* / A Gomes

E Cavani* R Lukaku
M Rashford M Greenwood

This is much more in line with what might actually happen with over £240M from player sales recouped and an investment of approximate £320M so the net spend is less than £100M. The squad wage bill will be culled with only De Gea and Cavani on over £300k per week and Rashford, Shaw, Dyballa, Auderweireld and Lukaku on over 200k per week. Seven players coming in would not have been the plan but with Herrera, Mata and Pogba all leaving plus the deadweight it becomes necessary.

We haven't had a guaranteed starting eleven since Ferguson left, we're not even sure what Ole's favoured system is.
