Review are in and they are gooood.

Warning: Trailer contains spoilers, because of course it does.

I loved the book, it's better than The Martian (imo) - it's best to go into the film completely blind.
I got ruined by the first teaser trailer, annoyingly - i imagine they're expecting the
cute alien to be a major selling point, especially for younger viewers, so felt it was necessary.

it's not really a spoiler, it happens very early on, but as someone who read the book the less you know about the 'cute alien' the better.

It’s definitely a spoiler, even though it happens early. Was a really cool/unexpected part of the book. Will be a great moment for anyone who manages to watch the film without knowing what happens in advance. So annoying that this is apparently impossible these days.

Anyhoo. This looks good. Will watch. Although I think I preferred The Martian. The lighter, more comedic, tone of this (book and movie) doesn’t really do it for me.

I think we may need a book spoiler sub-category here.

Really pleased reviews are good. Absolutely adore the book, especially in audiobook.

One of my favourite reads for a long time and a superb memorable character.

Has Gosling fecked up with his face with surgery ? Looking a bit odd these days.
He probably had to cut weight to match the description of the character in the book,
he is in suspended animation for the entire outward leg to the sun, so like a year and change, during which time the robotized health mechanisms have been e-stimming and exercising his muscles. He wakes up and says he's ripped, like a bodybuilder.
which could've made him look gaunt. Don't, you, dare, say mean things about the greatest actor of his generation.

Ive read/listened to the book several times and I absolutely love it, but I just do not see this translating well to a film at all.

Oh interesting I was wonder why he physically looked a lot lighter. A bit of a big commitment.

My apologies! Tbh you might be right in terms of Hollywood as Gosling is in the strangle middle point(Born 1980). He’s younger than the likes of Joaquin Phoenix and Benicio del Toro but nearly a decade older than Emma Stone(Who’s probably the greatest millennial actor).

Interesting, why's that?

On the contrary on my side, the whole time I was reading it, it felt very cinematic (same thing for The Martian).

Yeah the in media res/flashback structure of the novel seemed very cinematic to me.

Of my two favourite sci-fi novels of the last decade, Project Hail Mary was always infinitely more adaptable than Children of Time.

Book was one of the best hard sci fi reads in recent years. Looking forward to see how they spoiled it.

Just now looked up his age (45) and saw pictures of him that do make his face look plastic-y and "full". So, I see what everyone was saying. Who knows. Maybe they thought 45 was too old to play a single, high school teacher, and wanted him to look 44. There are not a lot of actors I give carte blanche to, but Gosling is one of that select few. I'll see anything he's in because even if the movie is a turkey (Only God Forgives) he's not usually to blame.

Felt like
Rocky wouldn't really translate well to screen and would just seem goofy, making it more of a comedy. Which may be what they have leant towards, but im not sold on it. The book had some wisecracks, etc, but I wouldn't have thought it comedy.

Spoiled this for you as this is the movie thread remember.

I’m more perturbed by you reading the book several times! I mean, it’s a fun romp but can’t see what you’d get out of it on repeat reads, when you already know what’s going to happen. Ulysses it ain’t.

Does a film have to be Citizen Kane for you to watch it more than once?

Agree about The Martian. That film struck a good balance between serious and light. I worry this film leans too heavily into the humour - the fact that the protagonist is a dorky, somewhat humorous bloke doesn’t mean the whole films needs to be centred on that… though I should clarify I’m basing this off the trailers.

Anyone seen it yet? Reviews seem middling.

Oh man. I would love a children of time adaptation but I just don't see how you can make that in live action.

Yeah they nailed it! Very good.

Rocky is such a good character. Gosling was excellent as well

It's tremendous. You'll laugh and you'll cry, you'll fall in love with Rocky, and Ryan Gosling will go up in your estimation.
Gosling is probably my favourite actor! And he never misses, so I knew this would be good...I just wasn't sure how good
