Gonna be a shit World Cup off the pitch, that's for sure.
roughly 75% of the world dont have their teams on the world cup. But yet everyone enjoys the world cup. The idea to have your own adopted national team is normal for countries that has no representation or countries that knew they wont make it beyond group stages.
You should see world cup festives in Asian countries... It's amazing... You have groups supporting most of big nations all over.
I believe you can fill 60k stadium with German fans alone in Indonesia. That and simply being able to watch a proper national team live... Might as well pick a team and support one for the night.

Yeah, like I said above, the fan thing is actually...a thing.Just seen some videos of Argentina training in Abu Dhabi. Loads of Indian fans in attendance, decked out in Argentina tops. Surely Qatar aren't paying for those too

If those fans can get some enjoyment out of the general shitshow that is Qatar 2022, then great. It's probably their only chance to experience something like this first hand. So, good for them.

Maybe inauthenticity is a blessing here. It would have been slightly surreal to have a crowd of Indians serenading the England team with “No Surrender” and “10 German Bombers”.
Few parts of India like Kerala, Goa and West Bengal has equal number if not more of football fans compared to cricket, and they go crazy during World Cups. Middle East has considerable amount of population from Kerala which is one of well to do groups there. So them supporting Argentina or Brazil is pretty normal

Indians supporting England is fairly expected. India watches Premier League, stands to reason many fans of English players. Back in the day Beckham was huge. Not a surprise at all.
Watching Oman vs Germany and never thought i hear something worse than those wuwuzelas in 2010 but today is the day.
What's a bit surprising to many is that some fans identify as "England fans" rather than fans of English clubs (I suppose they probably have favourite clubs as well, but they clearly think of themselves as England fans).
Again, though, this isn't shady or suspect in itself - it's just a different fan culture. A very interesting phenomenon, actually.
its blindingly obvious that Im not including Japan's own WC in that but note it was TWENTY years ago and this is only the 2nd Asian WC ever and this one is better placed geographically in terms of fan access
You might assume fans of African countries had it easier when the WC was in South Africa but you'd be wrong - for the North Africans Qatar is actually much easier and even for the likes of Ghana travel time is similar

You are absolutely right its not a serious football country but then neither was USA in '94. Still that doesnt mean there arent tons of football fans in the country and region so I dont see that as an issue at all.
My actual biggest issue with the whole thing is moving it from summer and fecking up the usual season, so Im with you on that at least
This is definitely what seems most logical. Think when the tournament begins then there will be more groups coming from various locations around the world.
And it will be much more than TWENTY years between the times it has been in proper Europe. Every 20 years in Asia would be a joke, every 60 years would be appropriate.
One in every 15 world cups should go to Asia which has half the worlds population?

Don’t hold back Massi. Let it all out. 60 years is too often. Ban World Cups outside ‘proper’ Europe. Hold them in the “footballing nations”, the perfect Western democracies with flawless human rights records. Maybe have 1 WC in the US every 50 years so the Germans can make their “haha Americans” jokes. Otherwise, keep football for us, not “them”. Am I right?
I dont know about “fans” being paid and all that, but I can guarantee that people from Kerala are very very passionate when it comes to football, be it club or country. The Brazil v Argentina rivalry in Kerala, as weird as it may sound, is unbelievable. So yeah not all “fans” you see in these videos are paid to do what they do.
There might be a lot of issues with a World Cup in Qatar, especially if it wasn’t righteously earned. And our regular footballing season got interrupted because of it.
But there are a few positives too that many of you are ignoring.
Yes Qatar is small and probably irrelevant in footballing world. But it’s location gives accessibility to a big population of football fans from Middle East and Indian sub continent. And as a few people pointed out in the thread before the craze for national teams like Argentina, Brazil, , Germany and Portugal is immense. I’m from Kerala a southern state in India and I’ve seen/ heard of fights that happen between Argentinian and Brazil fans that has lead to injuries and hospitalisation more than once. After reading a post from someone who was involved in atleast Brazil fan celebration on Reddit I can say that it was mostly a fan organised event with maybe support from Qatar FA. It was by no means fake fans. And I know many fellow Indians who has bought tickets to watch WC and Infact still searching for more tickets to go.
I’m going to watch my first World Cup with family. This might not have been possible if I wasnt living just an hours flight away from Qatar.

My genuine question is what happened to these stadiums AFTER the World Cup? Qatar barely have any futebol players let alone any clubs and even if they do have a league it is borderline amateur level so I doubt they would even fill out 5% of those stadiums. Seems like a huge waste of money. I doubt many even knew they had a national team.
My guess is on minor sports like Tennis, Horse races and Boules. Perhaps Qatari Ninja Warrior (men's edition) is an option too. Also, why not host FIFA meetings there; Gianni's living nearby, so...

Not to take the situation very lightly, almost all the high rises in middle is like that. Look at the tallest towers, the big oil and gas project construction phases etc. and this is not down Qatar FA or govt alone but the construction companies owned by expats the supervisors, hsse standards etc. this is from my last few years living in Middle East.
I’m not ridiculing this argument but just saying that the living and working conditions in Middle East is different from a modern developed country.

Good post. The whole "fake fan" none sense is pretty annoying to see but I am not surprised. Just another case of folks in the west (in this case football nations) not understanding fan culture in the east.
This happens in Asian countries for every big tournament. Asian countries don't have their own teams so they pick a side and support. Big deal.
