The football authorities have a hard-on for hyping up VAR and every little sensor known to man.

If the ball had snicked a wire, they would have shouted about it from the rooftops as proof of how good their technology is. There's no chance the ball hit something and the 4th official didn't intervene.
 
No way is the FIFA tech entirely trustworhy, it simply can't be in my opnion, but I'd like some true expert analysis of the specific tech independent of FIFA (who I'm surprised people blindly trust so much).

Who cares about your opinion? It's like saying you don't believe the Covid vaccine was on the level, and we ignore those people as the nutters they are. You're the one making a claim here. Present some evidence to support it.
 
What a privilege it is to watch this England team get to another semi final. After growing up with so many disappointments from the golden generation, the last 8 years have felt like a fever dream. Bellingham is an unbelievable talent - gutted we missed out on him, but maybe he wouldn’t be the player he is now if he’d come to us instead of Dortmund. Hopefully he’ll do a Varane/Casemiro when he gets bored of Madrid - particularly if we can get our act together by then!

That said, this tournament feels like the last Euros - we’ve never quite looked like a dominant team but we’ve done what was needed to get us to the next stage. Argentina has given me a similar vibe - let’s hope we can edge it on the day.

I really don’t get the ‘controversy’ tbh - it feels largely manufactured. The ref got the Anderson foul right - the fact they’re not always given doesn’t mean it’s legal to shove people over in the box. I suppose the inconsistency is frustrating but we’ve been asking for that stuff not to get overlooked all season in the prem. The spider cam thing is pretty laughable given the (lack of) evidence available. Thought it was also a clear penalty for Spence and can’t believe VAR intervened on it - so I’d hardly call the referee biased.

The whole thing smacks of the Coventry game - people annoyed at correct decisions because it wasn’t the outcome they wanted. I suspect theres a lot of overlap in the Venn diagram of people who didn’t like the Egypt goal being chalked off for going back too far in the build up, and those who want the England goal to be chalked off because of something that (allegedly) happened in the build up.

It's a moot point. From video above I can't see it hit anything. Even if it did hit anything ball was back on the field at halfway line. As the referee didn't blow the whistle you play until the whistle. Simple as that. Everything else is clutching at straws in this case.

He asked what should have happened by the rules if it hit the wire. That's all I explained.

That said, it did hit the wire, nobody called it out in real-time because most players are not ballwatching in the sky and you play to the whistle, plus it could/should have been defended properly after. Had it not led to a goal nobody would complain after that the play should have stopped. But it did and per the rules an error leading to a goal. You see this all the time after goals where something happened that could disallow the goal but wasn't egregious enough in real time.

The Norwegian players expected the ball to go further up the field and were positioned for that, instead England gains possession further up the field than they would had the wire not been there.

That said, even if it felt unfair we didn't lose from that situation alone. All we want is consistency. If the shove on Anderson was enough to disallow the goal, then the shove on Berge probably should be a penalty.

I'm English so no that doesn't fit. I worry about these things being trotted out to placate fans. How reliable is this technology?? I have serious doubts about it, but I'd like to know more.

I love the World Cup but FIFA is doing a lot to harm the faith in the integrity of it. This is just one part of it. My preferred outcome is to be entertained and everything be as fair as possible, with rules applied consistently, and let the best team win.
