From managing Real Madrid to managing Newcastle all in the same season. Would have got good odds that happening at the start of the season.

Crikey! If he can keep them up he could be a very good manager for them.

Great appointment for Newcastle. Massive step down for Benitez. But fair play to him for taking up this challenge. Newcastle fans would be idiots to not welcome him with open arms. They will never get a better manager than him at their current state.

They'll still go down. They're shite. That defence is championship level.

Don't think he'll be able to arrest their slide in a few months but easily their best option available from a football standpoint.

However he's notorious for falling out with owners when funds aren't there or asking for one player and ending up with another. How long before Rafa and Mike Ashley are having a sumo wrestling match?

Good appointment, would have never thought they'd be able to pull it off. He did a decent job at Napoli and was not that terrible at Real Madrid despite the sack. He's good at grinding out results which is exactly what Newcastle need now. Credit to him for accepting this challenge too.

Well, that's interesting.

If we land Maureen, we'll have him at United, Pep at City, Klopp at Liverpool, someone interesting at Chelsea no doubt, old man Wenger presumably still at Arsenal, the increasingly reputable Poch at Tottenham - and FSW in the mix too. Not bad. And who knows what Everton might pull out of the hat.

From McClaren to Benitez. That's quite the upgrade. I think he'll save them from relegation, but it'd be remarkable to see him manage in the Championship less than 6 months after managing Real Madrid.

There's no way Newcastle would sack him even if they get relegated.

Genuinely interested to see how this one turns out. Appreciate that someone who has actually won something is taking on a real challenge.

Newcastle are save now. Benitez isn't a top top manager, but he's a fantastic manager to get for a club like Newcastle, after all he's won two La Liga titles, three European trophies and the cups in both England and Italy. Goodbye Sunderland, Norwich and Villa.

Erm...fair play to him I guess, it's gonna be a challenge to keep them up and an even bigger one to push them up the table next year. I hope he does well enough to keep them up as next season is already choc full of big characters managing premier league clubs so throwing Rafa into the mix is only going to add to it all. It'd be great to see some good rivalries struck up next year.

Great appointment for Newcastle.

I haven't wanted a team to go down this much since... well since Shearer took over at Newcastle
