This is typical Benitez behaviour though.

Joins club, then manages to turn the fans against owners. In this case more against Ashley. He always has falling out with owners. Not sure what he was expecting with Ashley. But he’s played a blinder as he’s convinced Newcastle fans he’s some loyal martyr when all he’s done is run off to China for easy money, which to his credit anybody would have done. I just hate how he spins it he wanted to stay and all that.

So maybe we should hire him for a month against the Glazers.

Also those saying he’s world class. He’s not been world class for a long time now. He is suited to a club like Newcastle. But his style of football isn’t suited to big teams anymore. Even if Klopp leaves Liverpool, I doubt the biggest Rafa fans there would want him back as his style of football is antiquated compared to Klopp. It worked back in the day like Jose’s but now it doesn’t.

Tbf, he’s worked with some difficult owners. I know it’s a lotta dough and he’s getting up there age, but still surprised to see he’s called it a day and moving to China.

I think Rafa has played a blinder and has been able to do so because Mike Ashley is viewed so negatively. He has managed to walk away from a club he claims he had grown attached to for a huge pay day in China and has been able to steer the narrative in his favour. Compare the reaction to the usual almost villifying of players that go to China painted as cold blooded mercenaries.

Rafa is smart and I don't think his affinity with fans at his clubs is ever 100% genuine. I think it's in part at least a ploy to simply get them firmly onside as it gives him more power in the politics games he loves to play with his employers.

He's (or was) an elite level manager and done a great job as interim with us and I actually thought fan behaviour towards him at the time was fairly pathetic and at times embarrassing.

His liking for engaging in club politics and PR battles is probably what has led to him heading to china a few years earlier than ideal. For modern day owners I think he would definitely be viewed as high maintenance.
Not denying he’s always had problems with owners (maybe he’s just generally picked shitty clubs with shitty owners?) but bizarre comment re: fans.

Valencia love him.
His family still lives in Liverpool (real fake!)
Newcastle fans obviously love him (let’s face it he could have left any time or not even gone there...)

Napoli are ambivalent. Madrid and Chelsea fans obviously don’t.

I'm not saying fans don't love him, they clearly do. I'm saying I don't believe his relationship with fans has ever been purely organic but something he has orchestrated for self-serving purposes. That's not to say either that he doesn't get attached (Valencia and Liverpool at least he clearly was)

Does seem rather suspicious timing really doesn't it? For our favourite interim manager....?

He'd actually be a pretty good match for Chelsea right now actually.

It’s not gone that well for him in China, and with new rules blocking big-money signings from Europe, it’s probably best for him to leave.

Then again, Newcastle or Chelsea could be looking for a new mid-season hero...

I can't see him going back to Newcastle.

They didn't like his waiting skills over there? He should have read up on chopsticks etc. Volume-heavy failure

We really dislike him here due to his stint at Liverpool but I still think that he is good value for money in a market where good stable coaches are hard to come by. He has a problem with rotating too much but I think this season it would have reaped him good rewards in the PL. He can definitely find himself coaching a club at the level of Everton who have ambitions to break into the top 4.

Can't really see it but one they'd actually get away with BCD for pretty much rest of the season.

Can remember it getting pretty toxic from his first game when he took charge years back and Chelsea fans never really changed their feelings despite them ultimately meeting the season objectives e.g winning something and making top 4.

I agree but I think he would be better as a short-term solution. Ultimately, wherever he goes, he will eventually end up wearing out his welcome with the ownership / directors.

Agent Bruce's job was to nick points of the dippers, which he did.

Why? Unlike Newcastle Everton have money to spend so aren't in that 'just lucky to have him' phase. Their fans are massively anti the appointment as well so again to compare to Newcastle Benitez would be against it from day one like Bruce has been

Everton should be aiming higher than Benitez

Disagree. You only have to look at what clubs Benitez has managed and what he has won in the game to understand he's a massive coup for Everton.

He would be a very good signing for them, and quite a boring one at the same time.

Like who? Who is a big step up from Benitez that they could realistically sign? Doubt Conte is interested and there's hardly hundreds of great coaches around at the moment just beating down the door. Look at the Euros - best coaches in it are probably Mancini and Martinez, these are strange times on the coaching front.

I do not see the appeal for a club like Everton.

Yes he is tactically astute and a good manager, however, he seems to be a complete and utter hired gun these days.

I would have thought they'd want a manager that's going to sign the right players given they're happy pumping the money in, build them up into a more interesting side, and maybe stay there for a good period. Somebody really ambitious. An ex Liverpool manager that's been floating around doing random jobs just seems off note to me.

Newcastle and Dalian Professional?

Really not sure the point here, as he's been done for awhile and has turned into something of a relegation specialist.

Everton are a cracking little club, hope they get him. It feels a little like the Rodriguez signing - where you can’t quite believe it could happen for them. Would put them on the map though.
