That’s what you do on 80 minutes when you’re a goal down, not at half time. For someone who is supposed to be very tactically astute, you’d have thought he might be able to do something better at half time than throwing another attacking body on and hoping for the best.
Something radical clearly needed to be done at half time. And it did improve us for about 20 minutes. Despite continued dreadful individual performances all round. And let’s be honest, our squad is a fecking shambles. You can’t polish a turd.

Fair enough. It’s my view that he hampered the team in the second half. We’ve come back from being a goal down plenty of times in the last few years, we never needed to play one midfielder for any of those games.

His substitutes at half-time basically made it possible to drive a bus through our midfield and we almost lost the game as a result. Naive.

Buck stops with the manager. What has he been doing the past 16 days with the players?! His tactics are either rubbish or the players are ignoring him. In which case he should drop them and play other players. If he keeps selecting the same team expecting different results then Rangnick has to take the blame. The same team got Ole the sack and was shite against Norwich yet he kept the same team. Leopards never change.

Rangnick has a massive squad, he should find the right balance if he's a great manager.

let's see what he does against Burnley now the team has let him down he can't use the excuse they are winning games anymore.

4-2-2-2 is way too narrow. There's a reason both Pep and Klopp play a 4-3-3

Rangnick can play a 4-3-3 if he wanted to.

I highly doubt this.

"Amateur" is where I disregarded the lot. Ralf Rangnick, a man who is highly praised by Klopp, Naglesman and Tuchel all darlings of the CAF, is 'amateur'. If Rangnick is "Amateur" what does that make them?
I was referring to Ole here

Shaw is one of the best leftbacks in the country when on form, and AWB is still young enough to be coached. No more excuses.
Luke Shaw has had one good season in 8 years. As for AWB, who's 25 now, is a joke.

Surely 6 months hands on experience with the squad will significantly improve the ability to do his job in a consultancy role. He'll know exactly what the problems are when the transition is made in the summer. It'll also help the next manager get upto speed much quicker.
Yep thats the clear idea, it's logical and makes sense.

Of course, if we end up hiring an absolute spanner of a manager in the summer it'll all feel a bit of an anti-climax in a way :nervous:

My problem with our approach is we're limiting our options for next manager by making a clear decision now to transition into Rangnick ball. Most of the top managers we were linked with prior to his appointment aren't disciples of his philosophy.

It sort of felt like we just added the consultancy role to give him job security/extra money and lure him away from his original job. He will have less power than a board member.

I'm not blaming RR for the shite performance. It was always going to be a difficult transition. Our players genuinely look unfit.
The gap between the defensive and forward line was just massive throughout the game. A system that's designed with an off the ball press in mind will never work with unfit players.

clearly he's gonna need time to turn this shamble of a team in right direction, and a class midfielder.

I was skeptical before hiring him and that has not changed. I think it's going to be a long half year with him as manager, and then we have to ... again ... get used to a new manager instead of spending the next half year on it.

Those who are already doubting RR need to look hard at this bunch of players.

We have a new manager with new backroom, this transition isn't going to happen overnight... but the players are letting the fans down, most of them don't look bothered.
This.
And this. United fans , or a large cohort of United fans, would do your nut in.I have seen more outrage about a 1-1 draw than a 0-5 home defeat to our biggest rivals.
RR is in the job a wet week. Give him a little time.

Dude, its been three games. He came midseason and then had a covid crisis. If anyone over the age of 13 is unhappy with him already you seriously need to get your head checked.

I really don't think the 4-2-2-2 suits us as a team. We've barely created any chances against Palace, Norwich or Newcastle using it, and two of those teams are among the worst in the league getting battered most weeks.

We lack width and don't have the quality of passing or good enough dribblers to make it work. Maybe in the Bundesliga it'd be okay as the quality of defending is so poor, but you can throw a blanket over our attacking players. Rangnick either has to change the personnel or find a new system, this isn't working.

Those first 30 minutes were a breath of fresh air. We saw some of his vision, and how he wants this team to play.

We haven't seen it since.
One has to question why.

My idea is that these players get on the pitch and revert to default mode, which is playing like utter shite.
We did it every first half last season and this is just continuation, except we now don't care for the full 90 minutes.

Anyone thinking our players were arsed should watch the last 10 minutes of the game last night and see how many players actually make an attempt to win the ball or show some urgency.
I count 2 in Ronaldo and Cavani, but zero others.

I cannot and will not believe one of the managers known for a high intensity, high pressing philosophy is setting up a team to play in the complete opposite manner.

It’s a bit too early to judge him IMO. His first games haven’t shown us anything at all except that nothing has changed. Give him a bit longer to put his stamp on things.

The new manager bounce under him is certainly dying a quick death.

As an interim manager, time is not on his side.

That's why the club is making yet another mistake here.

6 months to turn around this dross into something resembling a competitive elite football squad is impossible. Why the board decided on a 6 month term is beyond me. He needs, at minimum, 2 full seasons to steady the ship.

I always thought Ragnick is more a theorist than someone who will secure Top4 for a club like United. Valverde was a much better option, I think.

This might be stupid but with Ole, during his caretaker phase, we were winning left, right and center and it clearly papered over some massive cracks. Whilst we were a shambles last night, surely its a sign of adapting to a completely different style? Starting slowly under Ralf mightn't be the worst thing. With LvG, we had that preseason that misled us, Jose had a quick start too and Ole had his first few games. Maybe, just maybe, being shit at the beginning of Rangnicks regime might bode for a better future.

The length of the contract can always be extended if he does well.

He has to show ability in getting the best out of the current crop of players first and foremost, and he's not really doing that for now. I don't expect any title wins, but I also don't believe we need to struggle like this to make the top 4 with the squad we have.

Of course it's still early days yet, but it's concerning that our bounce is already dying.

He's not an elite manager based on his track record so why would we commit to him for 2 years unless he proves to be remarkable during those 6 months? The whole point is for him to see us through the season, hopefully instil some basic principles (actual coaching, pressing etc.) and get an understanding of what the club needs so that he can contribute from his consultancy role alongside a long-term manager.

Whats his playing style? I've not been able to see what we are trying to do
We've barely trained since he arrived due to Covid. We've also not been coached with a methodical style for 3 years.

So unfortunately it will take a long time for his high press style to be implemented.

Most likely we will recruit a permanent manager in 6 months who will have a similar or compatible style to Ralf. And he will go to DOF or similar role.

He certainly talks a good game. Problem imo is the squad is very very poor. Not sure pep or klopp could sort them out.
I love ronaldo but for me he’s created an imbalance in the team and the only person that can play with him is cavani, and he’s generally injured.

He's going to clearly need time to implement these new set of ideas, you just hope that his obvious successor is on the same wavelength.

Would be classic United post SAF to hire the next manager with a completely different set of ideas though

Hes done quite well when hes been asked to implement his theory in the past though.

I cannot understand this 4222 bollocks. Too many players out of position. Zero width. Zero creativity. Zero defensive stability.

There’s a reason every top manager uses a variation of the 433.
Completely agree with the bolded part and the annoying thing is we actually have the players to play 4-3-3 as our best system too.

Up top we’ve got Sancho, Rashford, Greenwood and currently Martial with Shoretire and Elanga all in the wide positions with either Ronaldo or Cavani through the middle.

In midfield Fernandes could play as an 8 like how Lampard used too whilst McTominay, Fred, VDB or Matic can play as the other two.

Although I don’t rate either as top options we’ve got AWB and Dalot at right back then we’ve got Shaw and Telles at left back. Varane as first choice alongside one of Maguire, Bailly or Lindelof in the middle then we’ve got De Gea and Henderson in goal.

Do we need to upgrade in positions ? Abso-fecking-lutely as we need at least two midfielders and a right back but tactically we’re best playing a 4-3-3 with what we’ve got at the club.

Trying to implement this 4222 system doesnt seem like the wisest choice by him, it doesn't seem to suit the players but is also a system the players would take time to adapt to. Most of the squad will be more familiar with a 433 so would probably find it easier to play in

He's got a hell of a lot of work to do to change one of the most passive sides in the entire league into one of the most proactive. His football and Ole's football are diametrically opposed.

The transition isn't being helped by the fact that we have no time on the training ground, thanks to the ludicrous schedule and the COVID outbreak.

Things will get better, but this is not going to be a quick fix.

It's far too early to really judge him but early impressions are he needs to grow a set and start putting some of the senior players in place immediately to sort this crap out ASAP.

Maguire, Rashford, Bruno and Ronaldo could all do with time out of the side over the coming weeks for sure. Big ego, no work rate and bad attitudes between the lot of them.

At the moment he's just picked up exactly where Ole left off and picking the same squad every match.

That's alot of money sitting on the bench twiddling their thumbs.

It‘s WAY too early to pass judgment. We‘ve not only got a new manager but a whole new coaching setup.

The COVID outbreak whilst possibly giving an unofficial winter break of some form, has restricted us from being unable to train properly as well, also bearing in mind the still relatively new manager and new coaching staff.

So it’s no surprise that last night was a bit bleh. I’m glad that Ralf did come out and say he wasnt happy with what he saw though, compared to Solskjaer who’d wheel out the classic tropes of the boys did great and had a great time playing and that’s how football works etc.

Up against it trying to implement a new system and style of play mid-season during a covid outbreak

Would be wise to switch to a simpler system the players can implement because we/he doesn’t have time to get this system up and running the players aren’t suited to this style at all

It was always more about the players than the manager. Same players, same problems. We don't have options to change much because the squad is so imbalanced.

There was some encouraging things from last night i liked the way we were fizzing the ball through the lines into the strikers/no10s and the press was good at times.

First half the system was working reasonably well but there was too many individual mistakes happening in particular Fred and rashford we needed a change in personell not a change in system, instead we got a change in system aswell that completely screwed us for the second half. Any control we did have was completely lost and absoulte chaos ensued.

We went from being broken on occansionly to be being broken on at will and went from having a way of playing out to having no way of playing out. We could of easily lost by a couple of goals and I don't think it particuly improved our attacking threat either, tactically very poor.

Its early days and the players are obviously gonna take a little time to get used to the system and tactics but seeing obvious tactical mistakes in game is worrying and hopefully not a common theme.

Aw come on. Their only here a week ffs.
That has nothing to do with it. I would hope United would hire top level coaches in the first place.

Why should the likes of Ronaldo, Cavani and Varane listen to people who know less about top level football then themselves?
