My top five in order - first WC watched 1994 - subject to change based on this year's winner:
2002 Brazil
1998 France
2014 Germany
2018 France
1994 Brazil

I refuse to rank 2010 Spain as they bored me and lost to Switzerland in group play. 2006 Italy also bored me. Fantastic achievements for both nonetheless.

The 82 Italian side would take some beating but by today's standards they would not make half time with half their team on the pitch.

I wonder if I have ranked the most recent world cups so lowly because Im older and my bias for past world cups when I was younger is taking over?

Could just be amnesia as well because you've got Italy winning 1990 & Germany winning 2006.

Rank what?

The most memorable and entertaining are those that somehow come together, make it work, recover from adversity...

Spain 2010 would likely control and win a game against most of the others, but I would never watch any of their games again if I could avoid it.

The 1950 Uruguay side wasn't bad either.

3. Brazil 94
4. France 18
5. Germany 14
6. France 98/Brazil 02
7. Germany 90

No side is getting past that Spain side in my eyes.
Italy 06 was a fantastic team.
Brazil 94 were amazing as a child watching their attacking football (final aside).

I picked more based on my favourites/fondest memories for 4th to 7th than actual football quality.

Spain 2010 would pass everyone to death. I never want to see that Spanish side again. One of the most boring winners

Not satisfied with this list at all but I guess it's ok for a preliminary list, besides it's just hard and almost nonsensical ranking diffrent national teams who competed in massively diffrent environments with diffrent opposition etc etc.

Spain 2010 is hard to rank , they should be close to the top if not outright the best in theory but their performance sure left a lot to be desired.

If Brazil had won in 82 they would have been top of my list by a country mile.

I always knew that the 2002 Brazil side was overrated but never realized just by how much. One of the weakest tournaments ever.

Italy as overall winners? Can’t say that I expected it but then again they do have some impressive wins on their accounts: all of Brazil, Argentina, Poland & Germany were very, very strong. Even though they’ve started quite slow.

How the feck is Spain 2010 rated so highly. They won all their games with 1 goal difference and lost the opener. Granted they had about 97% possession throughout the tournament, but a painfully average Dutch side almost beat them in the final. Brazil 94, France 98 and Brazil in 02 are all better in my (EXTREMELY BITTER FECK YOU SPAIN) opinion.

Spain 2010 is unfairly categorized as cowardly, when the truth is that their opposition were the actual cowards that shut up shop from day 1.
Tbf the Alonso/Busquets double pivot was unnecessarily defensive when they had the tried and tested Barca trio. Still it won them the tournament but in a boring fashion.

David Villa is still to this day massively underrated. Was the most important player at the tournament for the carry job he did of the entire Spanish attack

Don't really see much difference between the top 4. Spain 2010 was the worst version of this team and should've lost the final.

This. Same with Pep's club teams and it annoys me so much that people can't see this.

Spain/Pep's teams = dominating the ball and attacking all game.

Opposition = parking the bus, time-wasting and playing for a 0-0.

Some fans = Oh my god! Spain are so boring!

I'd have France 2018 last, then Italy '06 next bottom. Then back to 1994 it's extremely hard to rank. Genuinely not much in in between the rest.

I've always felt Brazil '02 were a bit overrated since they weren't tested much, but Lucio, Roberto Carlos, Cafu, Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho is still a great bunch of players, who had a decent supporting cast.

And I wasn't the biggest fan of Spain in 2010 & 2012, but the players from 1 to 11 (left-back aside) were all very succesful at club level too, with the advantage of six of them playing together every week for Barcelona. Players who won the Euros, World Cup and Champions League was fairly rare, but this Spain team was chock full of them and overall they'd be extremely hard to beat.

Find this really difficult to separate most of them. The bottom five there were all quite stodgy, most had 1-2 square pegs in round holes, but hid it well with a clear gameplan that was too much for others to handle. Although I've put Spain first, it's quite possible they get picked off by one of the Brazilian winners who were defensively organised but packed loads of punch in attack. Would probably back Brazil 2002 to win the game with just 35% of the ball (they had less of the ball than their opponents in every knockout match aside from the first half of the QF against England).

Spain 2010
Brazil 2002
West Germany 1990
Brazil 1994 / France 1998 / Italy 2006 / Germany 2014
France 2018

Spain passes everyone to death, Italy defend very well and have Pirlo and set pieces, Germany are balanced.
Ranking France is tricky. Because of Mbappe and Pogba, they are the only ones that could demolish Spain by catching them high up the pitch with a quick pass, like those chances Robben missed in the final...but I think Kante-Pogba will end up chasing the shadows of the Spanish midfield.
Italy don't leave any space behind, making Mbappe much worse. Germany have Neuer sweeping against exactly that kind of threat.
So, France ends up last despite having the best attacker of all of these.

They shouldn't be but they objectively have the best run ever to a world cup title and were gritty beyond belief so i put them up there on that basis alone.

Argentina, Brazil, Poland, Germany is a run that has not been matched till today and probably won't ever be when its extended to 42 teams so I guess they're worthy candidates.

Although they'd probably end the game with less than 10 men if they played today so it's kinda wonky.

Also yeah 2002 brazil is incredibly over rated, folk just look at team sheet(which to be honest had some incredible players ) and automatically assume they were world beaters while it was basically rivaldo, Ronaldo and their fullbacks dragging them along, the only semi decent team they faced was England which says it all really.

Will not include the Brazil teams from 2002 and 1994 due to obvious bias.
