That was the guy we bought. Pure class. Moves like a racehorse and was organising the defence all the time. Will be central to our success this season so let’s just hope he stays in one piece.

It was maybe no coincidence that he looked so much better having Martinez next thing. Similar dynamic to playing with Ramos.

If Varane can stay fit, iI really feel he could / should be our captain.
This is the problem we’re having at the moment, our most inform players can’t stay fit. Varane/martial.these 2 could be crucial to any success we might have this season

Dreading him getting injured. Would still play Lindelof instead of Maguire next to Martinez though!
Lindelof is quite similar to Maguire in styles except he’s a bit quicker. Mobile defenders make a massive difference.

Imagine benching him for Harry Maguire, please don't do it ever again Erik.

I'd argue he's got a better range of passing than Maguire, he's reached Rashford a few times with that long ball over the top. Either way, Maguire is just shot for form and confidence, shouldn't be anywhere near the time at present.

Lindelof is better at passing up through the middle of the pitch (both short and the long ball over the top), while Maguire is better at using the width and getting our fullbacks and wingers into dangerous positions (mostly on the left). Wish they'd combine their passing abilities and get the best of both worlds.

Varane looked decent with martinez. Liked not having a pylon back tyhere. Honestly though there were still moments varane looked slightly off, hopefully he gets back in the groove fully. Is mengi still with the club? Wish the club would have some balls and just sell maguire. Go with varane/martinez as starters. Lindelof comes in for rotation/injuries, and then mengi can be the 4th CB or whatever and see what he can provide. Shit if ETH thinks jones fits it in more pretty sure that stupid fecker is still at the club too. Tired of our 4th CB making more than most other starting CBs in the league. Get the right defenders dont keep someone who doesnt fit the philosophy just because he was expensive.

Probably his best performance for us. Organised the defence much better than Maguire ever has.

Rolls Royce performance. Was immense. Just hope he can stay fit and Chelsea do us a favour and force our hand for Maguire.

If he could stay fit, I'd make him captain. Clearly a leader. The added responsibility will raise his game too i feel.

Incredibly knee-jerk. He gave us what we need when he came in, fair play to him.

We are equally crap with him though. He is poor on the ball, over commits a lot of the time. Can see him starting against Liverpool and making silly mistakes again, and get injured.

Thank God it didn't, was about the best I've seen him play. Will need to prove himself for a lot longer to be considered a good signing for us though. Let's hope he does, he's very good at his best.

I'm lost. You like him, you don't like him. Help me out here
Varane had an injury hit season and got relegated to a Sunday league level player by many on here despite proving himself to be a very good defender. What's more he was playing next to a ropey defender in an abysmal squad.

Yep. Shocking how people slated him. Fantastic defender. With Casemiro in there we should kick on now.

He had a few matches likes that last year. Certainly not 'plenty' though. He had as many truly bad matches as he did truly good, but for most of it he was just average.

Obviously going in and out of the team through injury wouldn't have helped, and the mess of a team that he had around him certainly played it's part. Hopefully he can stay fit now, and with a more solid team and organisation around him go on to play like this consistently.

I would say of the 20 or so he played he had about 10 really good games. His only really bad games came at the very end of the season (Brighton) when everybody had basically given up.

Feels like we're in the perfect position to sell Maguire and sign a promising, big and fast young CB to split time with Varane (for health reasons). Konate would have been nice.

He’s a beast. Great in the air too which is much needed in that back line. Hope he stays fit and has a massive season. He’s still one of the best CBs in the world on form for me.

He gives us an authority and composure at the back that is simply lightyears away from what we're used to with Maguire and Lindelof. Himself and Martinez look such a good combination.

Just untrue.
Last season:
Goals conceded per game with Varane: 0.92
Goals conceded per game without Varane: 1.83

This season so far:
Goals conceded per game with Varane: 0.5
Goals conceded per game without Varane: 3.0
