Dream signing at center back. Won everything at Madrid, a new challenge is in order.

Yeah desperate for that to be his thinking and not just using us for a contract renewal
It will depend on the Ramos renewal. If they renew him, then Varane will be on the market. They need the cash to be able to buy some forwards and maybe a midfielder.

Not happening. Likely outcome, he stays at Madrid ,we have seen this before.
Other outcome, part of a deal for Mbappe from PSG.

Best thing to do is just give him a deadline to give us a decision and then move on to the other two, massive fan of the guy but we have lots to do this summer and haven't got time to wait around for players

With Pogba having still not signed and probably unlikely to would it not be more prudent to just say to Real throw in Varane and some cash and you can have Pogba. Because it looks like we’ll be getting in to a scenario soon where Pogba leaves for free.

If zidane leaves madrid as is rumoured then pogba has no chance of going to madrid. Zidane is the ome who wants him not perez.

Has he signed his new deal yet? Same crud every summer with Real players, only one they'd give us would be Bale

Good point, though isn't Raul more of the favourite? Apparently he has been ruthless i.e. strict disciplinarian with the youth sides. Be interesting to see how that works with the senior squad.
Not sure if Raul is the favorite but it's between the two of them. If Zidane also leaves Madrid he could also go to Juve who already want Pogba. Can see Pogba suddenly dreaming of playing for Juventus if they make top 4 and Zidane goes there

Some of the prices thrown around seem a bit extortionate if he's only got 1 year left. £50m or £60m seems steep to me but then again we get rinsed on price on every single transfer so Madrid have probably noticed that we're mugs.

If he does want to leave then surely we will face some competition for the signing? Potentially the likes of PSG, Chelsea, Bayern, City could get involved, in which case I don't see us getting a cut price deal.

Can't find that CB thread again but this is a stat comparison of Varane and other CB targets

Statistically, Varane and Lindelof are very similar. You don’t see it in the stats presented in the link, but that was also a bit strange stats to use for comparing players. On the pitch, they are not too different either when it comes to how they play. As I think Lindelof makes a good partner for Maguire, I believe Varane would as well. Question is if he could replace Maguire if he’s injured?

Nice. Hes achieved everything and especially now that Zidane looks to be leaving and Madrid trying to rebuild I can see why he wants to go. Though it would always look suspicious when a top player in Madrid or Barcelona wants to leave for a 'new challenge'

Don't want him to be honest. There are better, younger CBs out there.
Arguably - that said although there are players with a lot of potential and even ones who might arguably be a better partner with maguire I cant think of many who are going to bring with them the level of experience and particularly that experience of winning that Varane brings

3 la liga, 4 champions league, world cup, 450 top flight appearences, more than 8o of those in the champions league and still only 28

To be honest Id rather have him over maguire - just not sure that him and maguire would be an ideal partnership.

Wouldnt be unhappy of we got him but I wouldnt mind a Kounde or torres

No chance for 60m euros with only a year left if he's made it clear he won't sign a new one. Would bid 40-50m max and walk away if they demand more.

Varane and Sancho could make us genuine title contenders

Agree with this.
Whenever I watch Varane I always feel he is not a committed defender, elegant, yes, controlled , yes, but in the EPL you have to be forceful, I do not feel he is that type of CB.
Some people like Kounde, but like others I feel his lack of height are a problem in the EPL. Name United's best CB's from the past, all had a physical presence. Name me a successful small CB in the Premier league era?
The most successful CB's over the last 2 seasons, Van Diyk & Dias, have a physical presence.
Not watched enough of some of the other CB's we have been linked with to make a choice, but I am sure our scouts have and can identify such a CB.

A midfielder that gives the option of playing 433 would also be nice.
Guess it depends on what Ole wants. Since Fernandes arrived he doesn't ever look to play a 4-3-3, so I assume he would prefer to stay 4-2-3-1.

On the odd occasion we've played the diamond though as you say, Fred/Mctominay don't really look comfortable there.

Unless he's looking to genuinely play 4-3-3 I don't see us going and buying a specialist. We will probably see what Pogba decides this year, then see if Hannibal or Garner are ready to step up next season before we buy.

Less than 50 odd million pound to be fair. Im sure it can be negotiated down a bit more.
Not sure 5'10 Kounde suits our needs
Kounde has a very good leap. I think he has one of the best arial duel stats in La Liga? There were a few top center backs at that height who didn't have a problem. Varane strikes me as a bit passive too, which has grown into his game of late.

While I dont rate him as highly as a lot of posters

Maguire and Lindelof had the most goals conceded whilst on the pitch per 90 mins out of these CBs and Varane had the least and also less than Ramos his regular CB partner.

Real Madrid average over 57% of the ball per game, while we average 54.5% I'm sure its a factor but still, suggests that Varane would be one of many many CBs who could help us concede less goals

If Varane works out, they should (on paper) form a fantastic partnership.

Interesting though, if rumours (Castles) are to be believed, Maguire wants an English speaking partner. If we dump Lindelof for Varane, we go from 90 % fluent in English to what, 10 %? Harry would be thrilled :p

No more young CB projects. We have the chance of bringing one of the most experienced CBs in the world right now and he's still only 28 years old and he's won countless trophies. He'd be an exceptional signing.

I think varane has done press conferences in English before... and some of our english players seem to struggle with that.

Maguire probably wants an english player knowing we cant buy stones or gomez so his place is safe

I searched youtube last week, found nothing. But it would be weird if he doesn't speak English at all, I'll give you that. How would he communicate with Bale? :wenger:
