That goal couldn't have come at a better time, looked much more confident in everything tonight.

Practically got us 2 of the goals and helped us dominate the game and this is the response? This forum is unreal at times, can't even give praise when its deserved

This. But a lot has made up their minds.

Literally got taken out before setting his foot on an easy tap in, which instead gave us a pen and them a red card. Did his part today.

He would have scored if he wasn't pulled.

Ironically, it turned out for the best.
If he had made 2-0, I fancied Bilbao to fight back. With 10 men we held them easily.

Gg Rasmus

As is standard around here, people make out he’s much worse than he is.

I actually think he’d be a brilliant young forward to have alongside a more experienced head.
Yeah that was a good performance against a usually excellent defence. He’s been abysmal at times this season but that was a good game he put in tonight. Held the ball up well, some good flicks, won the penalty. Solid.

Brilliant? Come on. I'll give him credit for a good performance tonight but he still couldn't put the ball in the net. With an actual brilliant forward we'd have really put them to the sword and put this game out of sight

Probably one of his better performances, but when you look at his past games it’s hardly a tall order. We’ve been conditioned into thinking an average performance is something out of this world for him.

He's looked more positive and active recently, like a reset in this important stage of the season after being quite dejected and lost.

You need your striker to score goals. He didn't do it in this game but liked his performance much more than most of other performances earlier in season.

He got our expectations so low that when he plays like this, we think he had a good game.

He’s a lot better against the less physical defenders he meets in the Europa League compared to the PL.

He contributed a lot to the game, which is good. Needs to do the same in the return game and final. And try to get on the end of chances of course.

Think that applies to lots of our players, away from the pace and physicality of the Premier League they look a lot better.

Thought Hojlund did well tonight and one of his better all round games of this season.

That isn’t what I said though.

I read what you wrote, but even as an understudy I can't see him deserving of that description based on what he's exhibited thus far. A brilliant young supporting forward would still be an actual goal threat with consistent contributions in the time they're afforded, no? I can't see him as an impact sub. I will give him credit for doing a job tonight but the standard has to be consistently higher

You’re right, it applies to many players. Perhaps I just notice it most with Højlund who is so often in physical battles in the PL that he just never wins. They also don’t mark him as tightly in the EL.

That’s the thing, I think without the ridiculous pressure of being United’s sole forward after a handful of games in Italy, and as an understudy, I think he’d thrive.
I don’t think he’s brilliant now.

Played really well tonight, made himself a real nuisance. He even showed a striker's instincts when almost getting on the end of the cross for the penalty & red card, although those instincts abandoned him when he should have been on the end of Dorgu's great cross in the second half.

He won’t get any g+a credit for the red card but that was the defining moment of the entire game.
Deserves credit just for that.
Plus he seems a lot more confident tonight. Hope he keeps it up!

He worked hard and was positive but he's just so little threat.

He just doesn't seem to have that strikers instinct at all.

Goal at the weekend and a decent performance tonight though, better.

That was a good performance, objectively good no goal but he added small details to aid the teams overall result.

There were people genuinely suggesting we play Maguire up front ahead of him.
I can make sense of it. Maguire goes up top in the final minutes and puts the ball home like it was another day in training. We’re lucky if Hojlund gets a shot off.

Many posters seem to forget his first season and most probably hadn’t seen him play before he got here. There’s simply no way that he has become as bad a footballer as his performances this season indicate. The most likely and sensible explanation for that is low confidence and team dynamics both of which can improve and hopefully will next season.
It’s counter factual, but if he’d stayed at Atalanta for another season and got sold to another team in the Prem with less pressure and chaos I’m sure he’d have continued his trajectory and still be considered one of the brightest striker talents in Europe.

He was alright. Expectations are so low it was probably a good performance for him

His all round game has improved massively in the last month or so. Unfortunately his movement in and around the box remains awful. Not sure that can be taught. Maybe it can though? Stranger things have happened.

I agree. the last 2 Europa games have been his best where he seems to be holding the ball better, his touch is much better.

Look at the difference it makes, a player that can keep hold of the ball, allows others to push up and control the game more.

I dont think United sell him for 30m if he keeps improving and shows he can.

I mean what is more likely - a guy quite clearly suited to direct football and running off defenders (as evidenced by a decent first season, especially given his age) either suddenly just forgets how to play football or isn't that well suited to the new tactics?

Assuming we're not idiots and it is the latter, it is also logical a younger forward who looked poor would be able to gradually improve/better understand what Amorim wants and look better? His issue is he should be a No2 and developing/pushing for mins/

A fantastic performance. Really brilliant play from Rasmus. He looked so fast again catching hopeful through balls and linked everything up beautifully.

He seemed to be winning headers and getting his chest to long balls against Athletic. Which gives a whole new dimension to our game. Because without that we’re immediately losing possession every time we go long, which is a disaster against a team that presses high considering we’re not very good at passing around the back.

He did very well on Thursday night, was impacting the game in all the small ways a forward needs to that have been missing for the vast majority of his time at Utd. That was a far better, more impactful performance that most of the games he has scored in have been.

He and the club needed to focus less on his goal scoring and more on his all round game because there is low ceiling for a guy who can only finish and has nothing else to offer unless they are scoring at Haaland rates.

Needs to take that into tomorrow, if he scores great, but be hard to play against.

My thoughts. Loved him last season. Even when he went long periods without scoring his play was good.

This season his play has mostly been abysmal and he’s not had goals to back them up.

What I fear Rasmus becoming is the false down player. Eg goes 10 matches playing bad, scores a goal or plays well we all get excited then he reverts to playing bad / not scoring for 5 matches.

Man Utd 4:1 Athletic Club New
He scored?! (glad for him)

At least he is getting a few goals now. Hold up play has been better too.

Not great by any means but better
