Before the summer, I would have broken a successful window as follows:

Retain top players - 2pts
Sign a right back - 2pts
Sign a centre back - 2pts
Sign a right winger - 2pts
Sign a midfielder - 2pts
Sell deadwood - 2pts

Total - 12pts

Retain top players - We seem to have kept hold of De Gea and Pogba but Herrera has gone - 1pt
Sign a right back - Wan-Bissaka is a superb signing and the best we could have hoped for - 2pts
Sign a centre back - Maguire is a great signing. Expensive but will be a huge improvement - 2pts
Sign a right winger - We've signed a young, promising but raw winger who prefers to play on the left - 0.5pts
Sign a midfielder - None. 0pts
Sell deadwood - Released Valencia and Wilson. 0pts

Total - 5.5 / 12
46% - F

That's not me giving out. I'm pretty happy with the players we've signed and I recognise you can't fix everything at once. It's just a brutally honest reflection of where we are and what was needed.

I am pissed off we let Herrera go. If we'd kept hold of him we could have done without a midfielder and suddenly our 5.5/12 becomes 6.5/10 and looks much healthier.

Before the window we needed IMO

RB
CB
CM
RW
ST (Lukaku replacement)

Well say a perfect signing is worth 2 points and whatever else in between 0-2

RB - Wan Bissaka 1.9/2 Excellent in pre-season only question marks over his offensive contribution. Looking at the market movement he’s the best RB we could have bought by far.

CB - Maguire 1.8/2 less than Bissaka due to fee but ultimately he’s the right mix of experience, leadership and talent. Again I don’t see other than De Ligt a better CB and arguably we need a player like Maguire more so I’d say he’s the best we could have gotten.

CM - Nothing so far so 0/2

RW - James 1.2/2 I guess we have to class James as the nearest we’ll get to this but he’s more of a LW brought in to push Martial upfront IMO so it’s hard to say it’s anything other than OK. He looks very promising and is clearly a fit athletic player that we want so while not ideal he should do a job for now.

ST - Nothing so far so 0/2

Overall as things stand I’d say 4.9/10. We still have two big positions missing and the winger we brought in while good isn’t elevating us much so unless another CM and ST come in I think it’s been an ok but not great window.

We’ve clearly strengthened the back 4 so I’m happy with that but we still have half of our needed business left to do and I don’t think we’ll do it.

Yeah right.
Glad you agree. We spend £130mil, significantly more than our rivals, and fill two vital positions with quality, and we keep hold of Pogba and DDG, both looked increasingly likely to move on not so long ago. That's a 4/10 or lower? Yeah right.

Anyone giving it more than 5/10 need to give their head a wobble.
You could say that anyone expecting a total overhaul of the squad and are dissapointed with AWB, Maguire and James should give their head a wobble. Yes, I'd have liked to address our MF and we still may yet (I doubt it though) but they are 3 good signings.

Hard to say until we get into the season a bit. Weve had what seemed to be some good transfer windows in the last couple of years but the league results didnt suggest as much. Will have to wait and see.

I think some of the comments on here are a bit daft and that some genuinely expected us to sign a CB, RB, 2x CM, RW and CF. It's not Fifa.

Also think people are underestimating the importance of shoring up our defence, which in my opinion we've done very well. We scored 2 more goals than Chelsea in 3rd and only 2 less than Spurs in 4th - the difference we conceded 15 goals more than each of them. If we look at last year, including Greenwood, Gomes and Chong and playing much more attacking football will get us the goals we need.

I genuinely think we're waiting for Sancho on the right and that's why we're not chasing someone for that role. Rashford/Greenwood/James can do a job there for a season then we'll be back in for Sancho if we get CL football next season. If reports are true we had him lined up til we dropped out of the top 4.

I would have liked to see some of the deadwood be shipped out this summer. if they're in the squad there must be an intent to use them at some point. Having Lindelof, Maguire, Jones, Smalling, Tuanzebe, Rojo and Bailly for CB's is ridiculous imo.

Overall I'd rate us at a 7/10 so far which would become an 8-9/10 if we managed to pick up a creative CM or a CDM this window. To achieve that in one window, as well as making our squad fitter with a high pressing, forward game is exciting.

I'd have given it a 5/10 but considering our dismal lack of outgoing transfers, I'd give it a 4. Still think we'd bring in another midfielder or an attacker and clear out some of the deadwood but not exactly holding my breath.

Defense has been strengthened with two proven signings who'd slot right in (fingers crossed). Decent depth too with Smalling, Tuanzebe and Dalot providing good cover. Lots of deadwood in the CB area though and Young.

Midfield looks woeful as of now. We are already woefully short on creativity and an injury or suspension to Pogba and I have no idea how we'll line up or who will be the creative fulcrum. Pereira, Fred? Gomes looks the best bet as of now but it's heaping way too much pressure on a talented yet inexperienced 18 year old to be the hub of the side. And that's before we consider the possibility of Pigba downing tools or not giving a 100%.

Defensively, Matic seems to be past it and McTominay seems to be our best option which speaks volumes. Don't get me wrong, he looks like a tidy player who's come leaps and bounds (and I expect him to keep progressing and become an established first team regular) but ideally you'd want a more experienced and a dynamic ball winner in the mould of a Kante/Ndidi. Esp given Pogba's relative defensive shortcomings and tendencies to switch off.

Depth wise we lost Herrera and Fellaini and are yet to replace them.

Offensively, question marks over creativity and goals, we still lack a RW and a proven goalscorer (not taking Lukaku into account) and aren't exactly doing too good in terms of depth either. Highly reliant on Rashford and Martial having their breakout seasons.

Seems overly negative rereading that  but yeah I'm looking forward to seeing how our new look defense pans out and obviously it's always exciting seeing academy prospects like Gomes and Greenwood breaking into the first team. At the very least our playing style should be tolerable and watchable.

Delighted we finally look to have a decent back line. That is a massive upgrade for us.

Disappointed we didn’t upgrade Matic and find another source of creativity and goals (James is still an unknown for me).

Overall it’s been ok. I’ll give it a 6/10 as our two biggest weaknesses are now much improved.

5/10. We need at least two more, maybe three (DMF, RWF, CF).

You can't keep giving free passes because previous failed windows and poor strategy have left us in a situation where the squad was lacking a RB, a CB, a CM and a RW of sufficient quality.

It may be unrealistic to solve multiple issues in one window but without doing so, the team will not compete at the top. Real Madrid have gone out and spent a minimum of £40m on 5 different players this summer. Barcelona have signed 5/6 players for their first team squad. Financially, these are the clubs we compete with and they are leaving us behind in the distance.

A window is also 50% about outgoings and on this front we have utterly failed. There are several players still taking a wage that have no business playing for the club. At a minimum - Darmian, Rojo, Jones, Matic, Sanchez and Lukaku should be gone. I'd personally argue that Bailly, Smalling, Young, Mata and Lingard should be as well. I read a comment in an article earlier that said "The greatest indicator of a poorly-managed club is a squad that is somehow simultaneously bloated and light on options". Sums us up perfectly - paying astronomical sums of money to spoofers who add nothing of quality to our first team.

It's kinda funny that people claim the transfer window has been poor because we havent offloaded a few of the players we want to offload - but the same people don't mention that we have kept Pogba which imo is a bit more important than if we are paying Darmians wages or not
The concern exists that we have kept Pogba purely because Madrid couldn't afford him. I imagine Pogba money would have been reinvested. Would we have been happier with no Pogba but with Fernandes and one of Longstaff and Rice?

Nobody expected that though? A 10/10 window would be fixing the weakest areas of the team completely at least on paper. 5/10 would be addressing half of those problems etc. At least that’s how I see it.

The expectation of signing a RB, CB, CM, RW and ST I feel is perfectly in line with what the club briefed Ole himself hinted towards 4 signings and that if Lukaku left we’d replace him hence 5. The second CM signing is the only fanciful expectation IMO. It’s not
Fifa but we already have 3/5 and we were close to 4/5 with Dyabla as the Lukaku forward replacement.

Nobody has said we haven’t shored up the defence. Anyone can notice that and everyone knew it had to happen and people are very glad that it has happened but that still doesn’t make up for the failure to produce meaningful signings in CM, RW and ST. Even with Gomes, Chong and Greenwood I don’t think all 3 will step up and fulfill our needs next season they need bedding in correctly, Greenwood and Gomes are close IMO and so I understand the logic of keeping space for them. In order to play the attacking football though you need creators and other than Pogba our team isn’t creative. It’s asking an awful lot of those 3 to be that next level creative player we’re lacking in their first full season.

There is no guarantee we’ll even be in for Sancho next year and if he plays well and we miss out on top 4 again then why would he join us? Long term strategy is important but so is being in a position of power in the market. Right now we only offer history and money. No CL, no title challenge and a poor recent record of making players better. Objectively speaking we are not the most attractive club.

The waste we’re keeping at CB is ridiculous. And this is not a discussion about our fitness level it is purely based on our transfer needs how do you rate the window.

Your 7/10 is I think overly flattering given there is no improvement to our midfield (which wasn’t great last season), a lack of player sales and no resolution to the Lukaku situation.

3/10

We badly need to upgrade the midfield. Maguire and AWB will help the defense, but we certainly overpaid for Maguire, who would not have been my first choice.

In a vacuum it is a good window, signing 2 of the leagues best defenders and spending roughly in line with what we can afford to spend on a season to season basis (think we could comfortably spend 150m a year). In a vacuum it is 7/10

In context there are some mitigating factors and some damning factors. Mitigating, there really is no value for english clubs in the market, even leicester getting quoted 75m for Ake & united getting quoted 50m for longstaff etc. We are coming into a season with 2-3 excellent young players coming through + Rashford & Martial so that is a reason not to strengthen the attack. We have spend more than all our rivals which shows how mad the market is. We showed for a spell last season how high our ceiling can be if we have the confidence and fitness to carry it out.

On the other side we didn't spend much last year and I think it is very obvious our centre mid needs restocking so there is very little excuse not to spend money there.

Personally I think if we restock our double pivot (I don't mean bruno fernandes) then Rashford, Gomes, Lingard, Martial, Sanchez, Lukaku, Mata, Greenwood, James are 9 players for 4 spots going forward will get us to next season where we might have better opportunities to add quality than we do now, out of the CL with Sancho and Dybala both not interested in joining. The player we look for in the double pivot should just be somebody who is going to complement Pogba and let the rest of the team get on with it. If pogba is injured... we are going to be muck, but most teams face this when their Hazard, Sanchez (of the past), Ronaldo, Messi etc is injured

I think in the situation if nothing changes it is 5/10

Fernandes+Madzukic and I am satisfied. Not sure about Dybala. I don't want player who are forced to come here. And if we are able to get rid of the deadwood then it would be an excellent window.

5/10.

I generally like the players we've brought in and keeping De Gea and Pogba would reduce the burden this transfer window had to carry quite a bit.

However, having targeted and ultimately failed to sign four players in each of the last two transfer windows we are currently on course to do the same again. Which would have to been seen as a disappointment. I expected four (at an absolute push five) players to come in and would have been satisfied with such, depending on the players. Also, one might have hoped we would have offloaded & replaced Lukaku and/or discarded some more unneccessary squad players (which would help us in future windows).

With time left in the window we may yet improve further, who knows? As it stands though you certainly couldn't use this window as evidence that our now longstanding issues in the transfer market have been in any way resolved.

Still a lot of issues.

We’ve addressed the lack of a RB, and our poor CB options.

We still need a RW and a CM.

6/10.

I'm really happy so far. I'm happy we don't have to play safe with our back line now and that the ball can be recycled many many time. I shall from now on call our center half partnership as VICTORY (Victor+Harry)! Our midfield needs a little work thought, Bruno should check all the boxes for me.

First - completed incoming signings. Early signs are that we have done a great job in finally addressing the right back situation. Don't want to get ahead of myself, but Wan-Bissaka has been immense defensively in pre-season, so my hopes are high that he will represent a substantial improvement when the season starts. I don't feel like we've seen loads from him going forward, but he at least hasn't seemed to suffer from vertigo and seems happy enough maintaining high positions on the wing when we are in attack.

The Maguire transfer (assuming he passes the medical etc.) seems decent. A centre back to play with Lindelof who is defensively reliably as well as decent playing the ball was needed so it's another signing that ticks the right boxes in terms of our squad's shortcomings. £80 odd million seems expensive to me. I'm not sure we could have got Maguire for any less - we were always going to pay a Premier League premium, but it's a bit disappointing that our scouting network couldn't identify any other players with the qualities we were looking for. Doesn't feel like a dead cert success to me, which you would hope for in an £80m defender, but I'm reasonably satisfied.

Not convinced by the Daniel James signing. I've only really seen him in our pre-season games but I'm not convinced he has enough quality on the ball to make it at United. Yes he has lightning pace, but I don't really feel that our pace in wide forward positions is something that has been holding us back. He seems to specialise in perhaps the only position where we don't need reinforcements i.e. wide on the left, as Martial, Rashford, Sanchez and Gomes seems like more than enough competition for that position. Basically I'm a little bit worried that this one is a product of the old boys' scouting network and he's going to fall short.

However, beyond the incoming transfers that have gone through, there are a glaring holes in the squad that we have failed to address: foremost among them central midfield and right wing, though arguably centre forward too. We are embarrassingly short in the centre of midfield- at the moment the first team options are Pogba (top class though can't be relied on to carry us), Fred (yet to prove he's capable contributing much), McTominay (continues to look promising but still unproven and inexperienced) and Matic (clearly has been a decent player in the past but looking quite sluggish these days). That's essentially one central midfielder who is definitely of the required quality, and even he can be
temperamental. That's painfully thin even if we are playing two in midfield - two injuries or suspensions could leave us without a single substitute. But that's assuming that this two man midfield plan survives contact with the reality of Premier League football, which is far from certain. If we have to switch back to three in midfield, which to me seems quite likely, we have three players and one substitute. Before injuries. It's farcical. And that's looking at it primarily numerically - thinking in terms of qualities, it is clear we are lacking players with the capacity to break up attacks and make play from deep. Pogba aside we are worryingly short of players who can break down a stubborn defence. With Herrera we lost one of our best midfielders, and we were short even before that. We ought to have signed at least two midfielders, at least one of whom should immediately improve our first eleven. Instead we have signed no one. This leaves us substantially worse off than last year, in a position which was already a seriously concerning weakness for us.

Right wing/right forward is the other major hole - it looks like we are settling for another season on Lingard, Rashford and Mata playing out of position there.

Finally, less urgently but still of concern is up front. For me Lukaku has never fully convinced there for us. If we were a well run club then two years of being first choice should be considered enough time to prove yourself, and if you haven't staked your claim by that point you should be moved on and replaced. Obviously this kind of decisive action always seemed like a bit of a stretch for the current United management. He's not appalling, so it's not the end of the world if he stays, but if so we'll have missed the chance to improve.

That brings us to outgoings. Valencia leaving is uncontroversial - he has been a good player for us in the past, but has looked well past it for a while now and we were right to say "Thanks for your service but it's time to move on". Herrera is a totally different matter. For my money he was one only a handful of first team players who I definitely would rather not have lost. It seems like we should have had him signed up to a new contract long ago, and if money really was an intractable obstacle then we had plenty of notice and we ought to have been doing some meticulous planning about how to replace him. It seems very much like we assumed that he would find leaving us unthinkable and have done next to zero thinking about how to replace him.

We should mention players who it is good to have held on to, namely De Gea and Pogba. Both are world class, and in our current state (i.e. out of the Champions League and out of contention for the Premier League) the chances of replacing them with similar quality would have been almost zero - Pogba in particular. It would have been terrible timing to lose them so some credit is due to the club for holding firm to keeping them here.

Lastly there are players that we have failed to get rid of. There is a high level of bloat in our current squad. Whilst, as mentioned, we are seriously lacking in central midfield, the situation in central defence is ridiculous. If Maguire signs we will have 7 first team centre backs. We ought to have been able to move on two of Rojo, Jones, Bailly and Smalling.
Most of them have at least some qualities to recommend them, but none of them are really good enough to be in our first team and we ought to be able to be decisive enough to identify players have had more than enough chances to prove themselves capable of being top class and have fallen short, and sell them. Having some redeeming features as a player should not be enough to keep you hanging around in the Man United squad for half a decade or more. The Darmian situation is ridiculous - it hasn't worked out, it's a shame, just take the hit and let the poor lad go. He hardly even plays so doesn't even need replacing.

With Mata and Young I can see the case that it's good to keep them around for their experience and professionalism, though it would be more unequivocally a good idea in a squad that wasn't so bloated elsewhere. Lukaku I've covered above - ideally we should have identified a replacement and moved him on.

It's hard to know how much to blame this lack of dynamism on this transfer window in particular - clearly a large part of the problem is paying high wages to players who don't deserve them, making them impossible to move on. That's very clearly the case with Sanchez, who has clearly been a failure here, but who I never had any hope of us moving on this summer. Barring a miracle we are stuck with him clogging up the squad and wage bill for the foreseeable future.

Also it's clearly unrealistic to get rid of all 9 players I've mentioned in one window (plus Valencia and Herrera) but we should have been aiming to move on at least half of them.

In summary - we've done well to sign Wan-Bissaka and hopefully Maguire, and to hold on to De Gea and Pogba. However, we needed to make more additions to reliably improve on last season - above all in central midfield. We have also failed to move on a bunch of players who clearly have no future at a top club, and have a limited amount to contribute to one rebuilding towards being one.

If I had to give a score out of 10 I'd probably go for 5.

6.5. We've brought in our RB for the next decade, a proper leader to marshal our defence, and a young impact player who fits the style Ole wants to play. And we've kept Pogba.

Negatives are failing to address RW for the 5th consecutive year in the vain hope we'll sign Sancho next season, and not strengthening in midfield.

Could have been a bit better, but could have been a lot worse.

5/10 for me. Happy we have improved the defence but leaving the midfield the mess it is has massive potential for disaster this season.

Some good players brought in in AWB and Maguire, but the biggest issue, our midfield, has still not been addressed. We will struggle again in midfield to dominate games and create chances. If Lukaku leaves, we are also short upfront as I don’t think it is fair to count on the youngsters just yet

We had 4 main areas to address. CB, RB, CM and RW. We have addressed two. We have failed to sell any of our deadwood but there is still time as the European window closes much later. We have managed to keep hold of our top players. So I'd give us 5/10.

In itself it is not bad at all, but it is definitely not good enough in the context of us neglecting the transfer-window last year in terms of both outgoings and incomings. We keep procrastinating. Soon as we fix one issue, it seems we can't wait to create another one.

Good post!

I wonder what other business we will get done though. I reckon there’s one more signing to come in. Hopefully Longstaff or Fernandes. I didn’t expect us to get everything done this summer. Over the next few windows I hope to see: some competition for Shaw, more creativity from midfield and a RW!!!! I think it’s probably sancho or bust for us under our new transfer model. I have a feeling Pepe will be a brilliant signing for the Arse and we may have missed a trick there. We should still be making top 4 with this squad and young players developing so it’s progress at least. It’s nice to see some kind of a plan being implemented. I’m really happy with our academy signings this year. They are really top notch.

Very happy that we're finally spending our money on players that will improve us now and in the future. This club has gone so far down in recent years that it requires a long term project to get us back to top. Sorting the defence now, midfield summer 2020 and maybe in 3 years time Greenwood, James, Martial and Rashford have improved so much that we don't even need to spend that much on attackers anymore.

We're on the right track.

Good write up. My only point of contention is Herrera.

I think he’s great, I’m sad he’s gone but ultimately it was the right decision to let him go. His wage demands evidently exceeded his worth.

Glad you agree. We spend £130mil, significantly more than our rivals, and fill two vital positions with quality, and we keep hold of Pogba and DDG, both looked increasingly likely to move on not so long ago. That's a 4/10 or lower? Yeah right.
We lost our second best midfielder, signed a RB/CB and Pogba and De Gea are like new signings. Consider me convinced we had a good window.

I can't believe the disappointment on here.

We've finally identified two positions for the first time since Fergie bought Rafael and Vidic.

We've brought an excellent young talent in in Daniel James.

I think we'll reduce our conceded goals by about 15-20 and increase our goals scored by 5-10 thanks to AWB and Maguire. Thats a considerable jump up the table.

I'd rate it a solid 6/10, maybe a 7. You can't change an entire squad in 1 window. There's still so much to sort out, but what a great start we've made.

5 / 10.

Improving the defence helps but I still maintain improving our RW position was a bigger priority, and the midfield to due to the departures.

The problem is we're going to struggle to create this season. Another out of top 4 season and I'm sure players like Pogba are gone.

Hard to see how anyone can give it above a 5/10 tbh.

I’m glad we’ve addressed 2 problem positions in RB and CB but we’re still really light up front and in midfield.

Bruno and mandzukic would lift it to a 7/8 but there’s not enough time left it seems.

If it finishes up like this, I'd rate it an 8 out of 10. It would have been lower, but I'm really encouraged by the type of signings we have made, especially at the back which was our real problem area last season. Maguire and Wan Bissaka are proven at premier league level and will make us much more solid at the back which will benefit our team as a whole because our attack will not be inhibited by our shaky defence and will likely be encouraged to take more risks as a result of having a solid foundation.

Having said that, our midfield leaves a lot to be desired. I would love McTominay to develop into a consistently great player but I feel we don't have a lot of strength in depth and a lot of the creative responsibility is on Pogba again. Should we sign Fernandes or another creative midfielder before Thursday, we would put ourselves in an incredible position and give ourselves a real platform for success. Add to that any significant improvements from players already at the club we could do something special this season. I might be being overly optimistic but feck it, I'm excited for the new season! Bring it on!!!!:devil::devil:
