4/10

They've done the absolute bare minimum and even then there are question marks about all three midfielders we signed this summer. Giving Tielemans an expensive 5 year deal at 29 is highly questionable and so is paying £50m for Santos, who seems to be at best a solid, but entirely unspectacular punt. And then we have Baleba, who we bought injured off the back of a terrible league season. Hopefully he can recover his form though and based on that a 4/10 seems reasonable enough.
Of these three only Baleba brings a bit of physicality and especially pace, which we have been crying out for for years at this stage. Based on the evidence from the first few games against comparatively weak opposition, Mainoo still remains our best option by far and both Tielemans and Santos don't supplement him particularly well in the team. I therefore won't be surprised if Mainoo/Baleba becomes our default option as soon as both are fit.

No replacement left-back and Shaw as our only real option is pure negligence. Perhaps just as bad is the fact, that we still don't have any option to backup Sesko upfront and without a focal point in attack, it is almost guaranteed that we will look very blunt in a lot of games this season. None of Mbeumo, Cunha or Rashford are natural strikers either and it won't help their confidence whatsoever being shunted up there time and time again.

It has been a terrible transfer window, bordering on negligence, in times when Champions League qualification has become so vital to the club's financial health. Even the chance of us missing out again should've never be made a possibility, by ensuring we are not left short and enter this season with enough quality and depth to maintain an upwards trajectory. If any of the nonsense we are being fed about winning the league, Project 150, or building a stadium would even be remotely true, we wouldn't have had a summer window like this one. But there is no ambition at United. Only lies, PR and greed.

This makes no sense. Think Noods said it a few lines up. The issue is that we have literally nobody else who can play left back.
Brentford signed Diouf for 35 million. That should have easily been a deal we looked at.

Luke Shaw is going to get injured soon enough or tired. And once he does we have no left back, that’s a glaring problem.

To be a sporting director of an entity like Manchester United and not be able to figure out that issue is scary.
But then it’s Jason Wilcox. A no mark winger from the 90’s who spent ten years with city’a under 18’s with little pull in the footballing world, a non existent network courtesy of basically having absolutely no experience in the scouting, directorial role . Yet this guy was meant to change our fortunes. But it’s not his fault, just look at the imbeciles who hired him.
Diouf is nowhere near good enough and £35m is not cheap.

We have players who can play LB. We won't just play with 10 men when Shaw is injured. When did we ever have two really good players in that position anyway? Who played when Irwin was injured? Or Evra? It isn't ideal, primarily because we need FBs who are actually a level above both Dalot and Shaw. If people were arguing that point then I'd understand, but I don't understand why people are so upset over not even just getting a 'body' for LB. We have players for that, why waste money on another one?

All the Wilcox slagging is incredibly petulant and tiresome. You say he's a no mark winger, but he won the league with Blackburn and played in the English top flight for over a decade. Most of the DoFs the people on here cream themselves over were never top footballers either. Why does that matter? You're just upset so need someone to blame and then lean into this idea that he doesn't do anything. It's just lazy and boring.

- that’s nonsense. He’s a good player, at 20 in his first year in the prem he did himself justice. I also trust Brentford’s recruitment. They don’t tend to sign deadbeats…

- playing a player out of position at left back is not a viable long term solution over the course of a season.

- When Irwin was around we brought in Silverstre. When Evra was around we had Fabio and O’Shea

- Luke Shaw is 31 and injury prone. Signing another left back is not ‘wasting money’. Especially if that’s a left back who’s young and showed promise in the league who fits the bill athletically. It’s called squad building.

- my point was that Wilcox carries no weight in the game. If you weren’t a top footballer, at least have a strong CV relating to scouting and directorial roles. He has feck all and it’s reflected in his failures. In particular at moving players on. We know how football works these days in terms of transfers. It’s who you know….

I wonder how people would score our rivals' transfer windows?
Arsenal: 7/10, Guimaraes, Konsa, Tzolis. Squad already excellent, didn't need much. At least tried and failed getting some big names; Vinicius/Alvarez.
City: 7/10, lost Pep/Rodri, but rebuilt their midfield with Anderson/Fernandez/Buaddi, while selling their deadwood for amazing value. Also brought in some highly rated youngsters and Ndiyae.
Chelsea: 6/10, brought in a very promising coach and adressed their weaknesses pretty well. Fernandez is a loss. They're not in Europe, so they can probably get away with a smaller squad this season. Also sold very well again.
Liverpool: 4/10, stagnated further. They needed reinforcements in defense and midfield, only got Jacquet. Barcola as a Salah replacement for £100m+ is quite underwhelming.
Aston Villa: 4/10, lost most of their best/experienced players, who were a mainstay of their success for the last few years. Some rather unconvincing replacements brought in. Manzambi is an interesting player.

Diouf would have been a waste of money. We need players who can actually play football, not just run around a lot.

Got one starter, 3 backups (one being a gk), no lb.

Not a serious club/10

Feels like we only did half of what we needed so even being generous can't be any higher than a 5/10. We rebuilt are midfield with players that again felt like are 2nd fiddle to what we actually wanted. Don't get me wrong good players and anythings an upgrade on what we had prior but we needed a LB at minimum and probably a back up 9.

2/10

Ultimately the players we brought in for the midfield are pretty good choices, but the strategy seemed hilariously disjointed and it feels more like good fortune than anything that we ended up here. We missed out on all of our top initial targets. In the meantime, we brought in nothing to help the left side of the team (either at LB or LW), nor did we supplement the ST or CB positions. We also did nothing in terms of sales, and seemingly are completely incapable of negotiating some decent fees for players who are surplus to requirements. Hargreaves is a complete waste of space and Wilcox isn't much better. Finally, we completely whiffed on a LB when it was quite clearly the most important need the last month of the window and at the same time we haggled over 2m and lost out of Page (who looks to be a serious prospect).

We literally signed the least amount of first team players of anyone in the league. Absolute joke.

A lot depends on how the season plays out to be honest. If we match last season it'll be a success

A major refit of the midfield engine room was needed and we've got a good mixture of youth and experience. It may take some time for them to settle in and get used to each other but our biggest problem position could be solved for at least the next few seasons if it goes well. Our Midfield before was literally an aging Casemiro, Bruno out of position, Ugarte, Mainoo and an injury prone Mount. Now we have 4 options to start in rotation, plus afew youth players that hopefully can start to step up and get minutes this season
We also have Lacey moving up to the main team which provides cover for Amad and Mbuemo on RW

The big issue is LB and a backup Striker. Shaw can put in work but its risky to depend on him, and an injury to Sesko means playing someone not a specialist stricker up front (Cunha/Rashford). Dorgu's best position remains a little big unclear and Amass is promising but has question marks. Really feel if we'd have managed to grab Welbeck for a couple of seasons we'd be in a better spot depth wise.

On the flip side we've only really spent a net of around 100-110 million which could help with sorting some of the debt issues and stadium financing as unsexy as that sounds.

Obviously I worry if the CM refit doesnt work out then next summer will be a nightmare. LB and Striker will need looking at, we could also realistically need a new CB depending on Maguires aging, If Yoro can kick on, or if De Ligt and Martinez can bounce back from injury. The big issue is Bruno, He's 32 this week and while our best player and I have no want for him to go anywhere, and retire with us - looking at his heir is a pressing priority, maybe it could be JJ longer term but its far too early for a kid to have that pressure.

6/10 now
8/10 if we get CL next season
9/10 if we get CL AND we see at least some of the youth (Lacey, Amass, Fletchers, JJ maybe) get some solid minutes and start to knock on the door

3/10 because we got bodies in midfield which we desperately needed. But, we shopped from a lower rung and jury is out on every 3 signings as to whether they'll be the right fit. Santos has already been dropped 1 game in, and I don't see him getting back in, especially once Baleba is fit. Tielemans will probably be useful in European games, but I'm not as high on him as everyone else is.

There are massive holes in our defence and the fact we haven't added to our attack is shocking. What wraps up this joke of a window is that the club is still employing Rashford and paying him £300k a week who surely won't stink the place out in few months time. Expect a struggle for European places and same old tired and re-hashed arguments on this board.

6/10

Midfield is properly strengthen albeit not world class player

The missing points are for the lack of signings for LB and backup ST.

4 or at best 5/10 I think.

We did some investments. But nothing in defense. We are couple of injuries from starting to struggle. 3 crocks in the first choice defender list is not good.
Midfield, lets see what happens.

Diouf would have been a waste of money. We need players who can actually play football, not just run around a lot.
Ahh let’s face it, whoever i named this would be the reaction.
Was the same shit when somebody would do the” name a manager we could get” schtick (when we had some clown in charge) and any suggested replacement would be met with complete panning.

Anyone who actually paid attention to Diouf could see that whilst raw, he was a talent. Good engine, quick, very good crosser of the ball. At 35 million it’s worth a project signing and as stated good cover at full back.
But what do the recruitment team at Brentford know eh?

Some players are not good enough for the top level and spending money on them can be a big mistake it is hard to recover from, especially at a club like United where there is no real tier above. I think Diouf is in that category. Time will tell I suppose.

Diouf has all those things but he's an awful defender. Anyone who actually watched him beyond a couple of highlight reels could see that. Is he even going to be Brentford's starting LB?

Brentford are buying for a very different MO. It's successful for what they want, but it relies on physical players and has an obvious ceiling. We can't just copy their structure and be successful.

£35m isn't a project signing, it's a player you expect to come in and challenge for a spot straight away.

2 games in is a little bit soon to judge how well they will do for us.
I mean how many times have we jerked ourselves silly over signings like, Schweinsteiger, Sanchez, di maria, Pogba, Zlatan, Ronaldo, only for it to not move the needle much, if it did, only for a short time.

It does look underwhelming at both first and second look but i have learned that it is difficult to judge a teams status, and how well new players will do at the start of a new season. There is a chance we will be very proud of our business in a few months.

4/10

Given budget constraints and the crazy market, I'm pretty happy with the midfield rebuild. Gives us much better depth, balance and some different tactical options.

Failing to bring in a LB is incredibly poor, and leaves us short on both quality and depth in a part of the pitch which has desperately needed some attention. We'll continue to struggle down our left flank both on and off the ball, and it'll hurt our campaign. Failing to move Zirkzee on and bring in a striker is also poor.

This summer was a great chance to add some real quality and depth and help consolidate our position, but we just haven't done enough. Very frustrating.

5/10. Maybe 5.5. Did a relatively impressive moneyball midfield rebuild, sold nobody, addressed no other positions. The notion that there is no player on earth available for a reasonable price who would be better than the thin air we currently have backing up Shaw is ludicrous. If the Whitwell article is to be believed, the club spent much of the summer chasing targets that anyone on this forum could have identified, and predicted the outcome on, in May. I don't know why we have this fancy data analysis department when I and many others could have told them Aurelian Tchouameni won't be leaving Madrid to make half the money and live in Manchester. Or that after raising over 200m in sales, Newcastle won't be interested in selling Hall.

Now I'm annoyed and think even a 5 is generous.

Happy with the midfield depth, but other areas needed attention. You could argue we haven't really upgraded the starting 11. We knew we needed squad depth due to being back in Europe, but we didn't really get that either.

Seems like we're going to be relying on players gelling together more in their second season, or young players just improving such as Sesko or Amad to actually have any hope of doing anything.

5/10

At this point, without seeing the new players in action, I would say a 6/10.
We've got the numbers in midfield but it remains to be seen about the quality.

We needed a LB and a ST, which we didn't get.

I''m with you, I might even go up to a 7.

I don't think we were ever going to get the plethora of people our fans seemed to think. It was always an either or situation, and that was always made clear. You don't go from a team cutting jobs to being one willing to blow hundreds of millions on gambles. Going into the summer, the key was to fix the midfield, they signed 3 good midfielders, with Mainoo and Mount showing themselves to be very good options as well.

In a summer full of overspending, they managed to avoid spending too much.

In attack, we couldn't sell as much as we wanted, but we did a good job in reintigrating Rashford. Who is a better attacker than most of the people who received transfer this summer, bolstering our attack. That could have gone south under the wrong manager, but we managed to do it with very little fuss. In addition, Lacey will also be an option.

The defence is the question mark, but it was always going to be that way given that we have some young players in there. Yoro and Heaven will play a lot this year and hopefully at least one of them fully secures a place in our starting defence. Dalot and Mazraoui are good options. Even Shaw is a good option. With Martinez, De Ligt and Maguire all being good defenders.

The issue we have defensively is a balance issue, not a quality issue. Shaw doesn't have the attacking nous to push high up the pitch and keep the width that would allow us play the 3 at the back when we are in possession or in rest defence ( with the rb being the 3rd cb). This is fine, but when Cunha/Dorgu play on the left, they like tucking in - presenting a space issue. On Saturday, it worked because we reversed it, we had Rashford keeping width on the left, with Dalot keeping width on the right, allowing Shaw to play as the third cb/ inside full back in possession. Ideally its obvious that Carrick would prefer to have the left hand side's full back keeping width, as Amad is a good one on one player, and can keep the width on the right hand side. However, I think we have way more solutions to that problem than simply switching sides.

a. I think Dorgu can play as a left back
b. I think Dalot can play as an attacking left back

Our fans are impatient because other teams have been really frivolous with their spending, but that doesn't mean we just buy anyone. It would have been great to fully fix this issue, especially given Shaw's injury record; but if they think we can wait this part out, then I don't see the issue. It's nowhere near as glaring of an issue as people try to make out. Shaw is not as good as he used to be, but he's good enough for now. Martinez' not supporting him was as much to blame for the goal as Shaw getting beaten was. I think we have good pieces. Even Martinez showed during the world cup that he's capable of being a starting cb for a top team, but we have to get the balance right. Is Maguire a good fit for him? Does he need someone faster? Has Yoro improved so much on the ball that we don't need Martinez in the line up? Can Yoro play LCB? We need to answer those questions first imo

5. The team still feels like a squad of players who are mostly good but not enough to do anything substantial with. It still feels a team of individuals and we'll keep relying on moments to get us through games

5/10

Three decent midfield signings, but very little outgoings and didn't address our other clear weaknesses in CF and fullback areas. Worried that we'll end up having a defensive injury crisis as we have too many injury prone players.

We really could have made strides on this window but barely managed the bare minimum.

If we had gotten a top, top midfielder like Tonali, Guimarães or Anderson I would have said a solid 7.5. Add Lewis Hall it would have been an 8.5 and an a number nine that would have been a fantastic window

Lammens
Dalot Maguire Martinez Hall
Mainoo Guimarães
Mbeumo Bruno Cunha
Gonçalo Ramos

Let‘s see how the new boys get on though.

5 if i'm generous.

ok we got baleba but we missed out on fernandes and potentially tonali, didnt get tchoumani or camavinga. yes maybe they were not that gettable, but we are a big club and should be getting those lot.
didnt get any LB which is a glaring mistake
didnt get a backup striker

didnt get rid of zirkzee (im ok with rashford staying)

we are of the same mind redsky

A strong 8 - Unbelievable we got both Baleba and Tielsmann at those prices . . . and a very good and very young Santos. Lacy's like a new signing as well and looks decent in the middle. Our midfield looks sorted for a few years with potential to be among the world's best, especially if Baleba fills his immense potential which I think he will.

An already great front line has been given a massive boost with Rashford back. There are several possibilities to back up Sesko and Zirkzee is still around as well.

That has to be considered a fantastic window. Not finished, but a definite huge step forward for the years to come.

Not too worried about the defense. I can't think of a side that can boast 5 centre halves the class of Martinez, Maguire, Heaven, Yoro, and De Ligt, with decent emergency back ups in Shaw and Mazza

Shaw has plenty back ups for now in Dorgu, Mazza, Dalot and even Martinez. I'm sure we'll be in for another left back in January, if the opportunity is right. We have the luxury to be patient. So glad there wasn't a last second panic buy. And I'm sure the low sales for our players and Rashford's 300 + weekly wage weighs heavily. All in all, Hall would've made this a 10 window, but am super satisfied

Dalot is absolute garbage as an attacking LB. Every time he plays there our play down our left side is massively stunted. He can't go on the outside, so he almost always just cuts back in and plays a safe pass backwards or sideways. It makes us incredibly predictable and easy to defend against.

Tonali just isn't a top midfielder. I'd rather have any of our three than spend 100 million on him.

5/10. Baleba if he can rediscover his form is a profile of midfielder we've been crying out for, but I'm so far underwhelmed by Tielemans and Santos. They are both massive downgrades on Casemiro.

Sone of those signings were January, Mata and Bruno the notable ones. Take them out and you can include 2013 and 2019 as well.

A lot is dependent on Baleba since there was a gap in midfield that we identified him to fill. I'm not as high on him but he is still rated very highly so it's difficult to give a rank to the window

If Baleba doesn't work out, it'd be a 5/10 since we'll still have an incomplete midfield but if he does succeed then an 8/10 since a major area of concern will be solved but we would still need a backup/new LB and backup ST.

For me, the transfer window screams a Top 6 place finish, so I don't want to hear any knobheads asking for the manager to be sacked after a few defeats.

United will finish somewhere around 4th if everyone ignores the outside noise and doesn't completely unravel after a defeat or 2.

It does feel like a missed opportunity, with all the other teams in somewhat uncertain situations themselves...but never mind, the window is closed now, so we just need to get on with it.
