Television Recommend me a TV Show (more TV reviews now)

Finished this tonight. At half the episodes (4 instead of 8) it probably would have been better, but likely could have been told in one 2-hour movie. Turned into a shaggy dog story, then flip flopped between tones and visual style like they changed their minds halfway through and started making a different show, babes.

Hard pass if there’s a season 2.
I gave up on S2 after 20 mins.

Finished the Night Manager season 2 last night.

Im conflicted. It got a bit better towards the end, but I also wish this show would have gone more in the direction of having the seasons stand on their own better, especially with a S3 in the works. Those who watched it will know what I mean by that. Either way, now that we re on the continuation train - I hope the next season will be a banger and find back some of the quality of the first season.

That opening must be rough!

I get it, TV shows are supposed to be light entertainment and not deep meditations on human existence, but the minimum threshold is that a show makes logical sense. They can use magic, supernatural elements, whatever, in service of this, but it needs to be consistent.

The more I think about this show, the angrier I get. There were so many characters that were either totally unnecessary or air-lifted in from an alternate universe. Tommy at the gas station, the motel manager, Booker, Babes, Rossa, Jodie, and Dumbshit Dara herself, to name a few. It's like the show runner wanted to make a series about generational trauma, and Catholic guilt, and friendships from youth souring in adulthood, and also a series about slapstick, arch, over-the-top silliness, while also creating a Kingsmen-style secret vigilante group.

OK, I'm better now that it's out of my system.

I don't disagree. Yet enjoyed it enough to watch again.

Separately, started off this limited series DTF St. Louis, with Jason Bateman and David Harbour (the fellow from Stranger Things). Decent start to an interesting quirky show.
Watched the first two episodes and liking it so far. More of a whodunnit and Linda Cardellini still looks amazing

What's a good show where the episodes are standalone, and not really connected?

Anthology stuff I guess?

Black Mirror
Love, Death and Robots
Inside No.9

Not many to be fair. Most anthology are unconnected whole seasons.

I'm spoiled on tv tonight. Got the match and then the Netflix Chili Peppers documentary and also Peaky Blinders out today.

Oh shit that's tonight already?? Time to pour myself a stiff drink tonight and put that on. Wonder if it will have any hint at all about where they ll take the sequel.

Mr. Mercedes

Based on Stephen King books. Mass murderer hunt ran by a retired detective.
At times the show is incredibly silly and below every standard but still I've sat through 2 and a half seasons.

We finally finished travelers. In many ways a great Sci-fi TV series but although in many ways season 3 was the best it was also the worst as they obviously knew they were likely to be cancelled and ended up rushing through 2 or 3 seasons of plot (or just jettisoning storylines) in a single season to come to some sort of ending. Well worth a watch but also a missed opportunity imo.

It's a mini series from 2024, but I haven't seen in mentioned here. The TV adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo is excellent.

Not seen a thread for it but a new show by the Duffer Brothers (Stranger Things) is out - Something Very Bad is Going to Happen. Just saw the first episode (its a mini series) and its pretty creepy but interesting thus far. I think its got promise.

Season 2 of Paradise finished recently. Its different but still good in my opinion

Main difference for me is that the former villain from season 1 is now in the grey and has some redeeming moments. So now theres really no main villain other than Jane, who gets taken out fairly easily by someone we had no reason to think would be able to do so. So yeah a lack of a villain but still plenty of action and interesting stuff

DTF St. Louis (HBO)

It's ok. Nothing mind blowing but decent enough dark humor murder mystery something something.

Watched the first episode, actually it's still ongoing. Not too impressed obviously.

If you like your French cop shows, I recommend Braquo if you haven't seen it already. It's in the mould of The Shield. Undercover cops who don't necessarily play by the rules, constantly having to deal with the consequences of not playing by the rules, getting deeper and deeper into the shit. I thought it was excellent.

Adding Spiral/Engrenages to this. Fantastic show. Felt the 8th/final season was the weakest but great tv before that

https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1909015/

Pretty intense show. Same genre.

Actually one of the main actors from Undercover was in The Bureau for a few episodes.

Dark Winds has just finished the season. Still very enjoyable but the ending seemed a bit of an anticlimax.

Paradise has also just ended season 2. Not bad but also left you feeling there could have been a bit more.

Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord
A spin-off I wasn't expecting much from for a character I didn't think there was much appetite, but it holds promise. It has a unique animation style with grittier more realistic character models while the cityscapes look like impressionist paintings.

2 episodes out. Bonus points if you can guess the cop's voice actor.

Mostly enjoyed Paradise Season 2, but overall I preferred the first season.
