Post your list of 20 best goalkeepers of all-time. I'll close the thread in a week, on 9th of July (unless we decide to extend the vote).

Note: all discussion goes to this thread - http://www.redcafe.net/threads/redcafes-top-20-by-position.448431/

Note: you can post less than 20 names, but not more

The list should be posted in the required format:

  1. L. Karius
  2. M. Taibi
...

20.

EDIT: After careful considerations, we're including another rule — only players that had played at least a season after the 1950 WC are eligible.

The final list:

1. Buffon
2. Yashin
3. Schmeichel
4. Kahn
5. Neuer
6. Banks
7. Zoff
8. Maier

46. Rene Higuita, Shay Given, Hugo Lloris. 1 point.

A World Cup winner, a mad trickster... and Shay Given. God knows how, but Shay Given had made the list of the best keepers of all-time. But we all know why we're here:

44. Alisson Becker, Júlio César. 2 points.

This one is for the Barcelona fans. There will be a surprising amount of Brazilian keepers on the list, considering the general consensus about their quality. If Alisson continues playing like this, he'll have a good chance of significantly improving his standing over the next decade.

41. Dida, Ivo Viktor, Andoni Zubizarreta. 3 points.

Both Zubizarreta and Dida were spoiled with success — they've won pretty much everything there was to win with Barcelona and AC Milan respectively. Ivo Viktor wasn't so lucky — he was born on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain and spent his whole career in Czechoslovakia. But when the time came, he was ready, and in 1976 he starred as his country's best player in the successful European Championship campaign. His outstanding contribution was recognised by the Western press — until this day Ivo Viktor remains one of the very few goalkeepers to get into top 3 of the Ballon d'Or vote.

40. Enrico Albertosi. 4 points.

In a long line of Italian goalkeepers Albertosi certainly wasn’t the best, but he still managed to earn 34 caps — a significant amount, considering that for a long time he competed for a starting place with Dino Zoff himself. With Albertosi in goal, Italy reached the 1970 World Cup final, and the keeper was praised for his performance against West Germany in the legendary semi-final (also known as the «Game of the Century»). At the club level, he also enjoyed some success — Albertosi had won a few trophies with Fiorentina (that earned him a place in the club’s Hall of Fame), an unimaginable Serie A title with Cagliari in 1970 and another league title with AC Milan.

37. Francesco Toldo, Gianluca Pagliuca, Keylor Navas. 5 points.

Francesco Toldo

Toldo is another Italian keeper whose career took a huge hit because of the insane competition around. Yet, at 2000 the stars aligned for him, he was voted Serie A keeper of the Year for his form with Fiorentina and, more importantly, became a starter for Italy for the 2000 Euros ahead of Buffon (unlucky injury), Peruzzi and Pagliuca. And he did not disappoint — his fantastic performance earned him a place in the Team of the Tournament and even a Ballon d’Or nomination. Sadly, it all ended there — when Buffon came back, he returned as an undisputed number 1. Toldo spent the best part of his career at Fiorentina, earning a legendary status there, but most of his honours came from his time at Inter — already as a substitute goalkeeper.

Gianluca Pagliuca

Gianluca Pagliuca is clearly one of Serie A’s all-time greats. Only four players managed to overcome him since he beat Dino Zoff’s record of most league’s appearances — Maldini, Buffon, Totti and Zanetti. And yet, for all his club career, somehow he hadn’t won that much, never playing for the dominant sides of the era. Which makes his only Serie A title even sweeter — it was the first league win for Sampdoria as well. The game against Inter at San Siro was the crucial point of the season — Pagliuca saved the penalty by Matthäus and kept a clean sheet. Overall he saved 24 penalties in Serie A — the league record.

Keylor Navas

If not for the infamous fax machine, Keylor Navas would’ve most probably been a United’s keeper now. He is rarely mentioned alongside the likes of Neuer, De Gea or Oblak, but you can not deny his role in Madrid’s unprecedented European success. His performances for Costa Rica were equally impressive, although often overlooked — he had earned 3 MotM awards in 5 games of 2014 World Cup, where his country unexpectedly went to the quarter-finals, and proved his class in the next tournament, even though Costa Rica failed to qualify for the play-offs.

Woah, Van Der Sar is quite overrated in here, Cech and Casillas were comfortably better than him imo.

Not going to name keepers before my time, only the top 5 are in a particular order really.

1.Schmeichel
2.Neuer
3.Buffon
4.Kahn
5.Casillas
6.Chilavert
7.Cech
8.De Gea
9.Toldo
10.Van Der Sar

Sorry, even when we had him, I'd have never traded him for either of who you mention. They are both top keepers, but VDS was inspirational to our defense. Gave it a sense of solidity and wholesomeness.

In which characteristics would you rate them 2 better than VDS?

I always felt that VDS had a knack for letting easy goals in at times, especially low shots, his reactions were slow at times, but he was definitely a top keeper, don’t get me wrong.
I just think that Cech was an absolute monster and unbeatable at times at his peak, was really consistent too, and Casillas had a long career where he was a legend for both club and country, an unbelievable shot stopper as wel.

@harms I thought we were doing only Top 20.

But still love a longer list. Once done, move the intermediate posts to get a consecutive list.
I think it's interesting to see the bottom as well — we can leave only 20 names in the final list.

Nothing wrong with sticking the top 50 at the end of the thread, the op can be limited to 20.
