Same. Loved carrick. Pissed me off no end that my united loving friends didn’t appreciate him and gave me stick for getting his name on my shirt
Sorry just noticed your reply, mate. Yeh. After Cantona and Scholes, he's my man. There are/were more glamorous players we've had over the years, but I just love him as footballer. Intelligent, constantly gave at least 7/10 performance years after years, unselfish as player, and never be off the field persona. Just a total pro.

8. David de Gea (20)

Premier League Appearances - 269
Overall Appearances - 354
Premier League Goals - 0
Overall Goals - 0
Position - Goalkeeper

It seems so long ago now, but at one point David de Gea's contribution to Manchester United was called into question. There was a genuine campaign at one point for Lindegaard (now Burnley's fourth choice goalkeeper) to start over him in goal at the club. Yet here we are as David de Gea enters into his eight season at the club, widely regarded as the best keeper in the league and the winner of the Matt Busby Player of the Season award four times.

With Van der Sar leaving after the 2011 Champions League final, Manchester United had a huge green hole to fill. Enter the Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea signed from Atletico Madrid for a total of 18 million pounds. In his first season at the club, question marks were asked about the lanky Spaniard, as he would let in a succession of weak goals and would seem to struggle with the robust nature of the Premier league. Teams would often target the goalkeeper on crosses and corners and Manchester United fans were worried about their new signing. However, de Gea always kept the faith.

"All keepers make mistakes once in a while and none of us like it when we do. I have every intention of spending many years here at Manchester United. I want to become a great United keeper and I want to earn and deserve the respect I hope to get."

Ferguson kept with the goalkeeper and his faith was repaid tenfold. David was a massive influence on the club in the 2012/2013 season where he would win his first league title in England. As Sir Alex Ferguson retired, de Gea would continue playing under managers David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal and as the trophies dried up, de Gea's heroics would be a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing few seasons. His fantastic shot stopping ability, aerial presence and ability to snuff out danger means that de Gea has undoubtedly been Manchester United's best player in recent history. His peers recognised this when they voted him players' player of the year for four out of the last five seasons.

Now playing under his sixth Manchester United manager, de Gea recently entered a legendary list of goalkeepers when he kept his hundredth Premier League clean sheet. He is forty-third in the list of all time Manchester United appearances and has the fifth most clean sheets in Manchester United's history. No matter what has happened in the last few years, United fans have had faith in their keeper because they know that Dave saves.

7. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (18)

Premier League Appearances - 151 (84)
Overall Appearances - 216 (150)
Premier League Goals - 91
Overall Goals - 126
Position - Striker

"When Teddy scored, I thought, yes! I'm going to play 40 minutes of a Champions League Final. That's going to be unbelievable." - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 1999. He had replaced Andy Cole in the 81st minute of the game. We all know what happened next.

There's not many more iconic moments at our great football club. In probably the biggest game ever, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cemented himself as a Manchester United legend for decades to come. To this day mention the words "And Solskjaer has won it!" to a Manchester United fan and their eyes will gaze over as they think back to the miracle in Barcelona, where Ole sent United fans into rapture.

He joined Manchester United three years earlier, having arrived a relatively unknown player from Norwegian club Molde for 1.5 million. He made his debut against Blackburn in August. He come off the bench (he often would), he scored (he often would) within six minutes. Old Trafford had just got its first glimpse of the Babyface Assassin.

He would finish his first season with 18 Premier League goals, helping United win a Premier League trophy. Although he never hit 18 Premier League goals again in one season, he had an amazing ability to come on to the pitch and change the game in a moment, his precise finishing and ability to find space would win United countless points over his eleven year stay at the club. Over that time he would pick up six premier league trophies with the Red Devils.

As the 2003/2004 season started Ole Gunnar found himself playing in an unfamiliar right wing position. However, despite the relatively new role, Solskjaer's crossing ability and knack of scoring goals when the club needed it meant Ole was starting to thrive in his new role. That was until an injury against Panathanaikos would kick off a three year long battle against injuries. Ole would suffer fraction cheekbones, broken legs and intensive knee surgery that meant he was never going to be the same player again. Nevertheless, he battled back and scored his first premier league goal in over three years against Charlton in 2006, one of the best Premier League moments of all time.

Ole is still considered a legend at Old Trafford and recently he has returned to Manchester United as manager. Helping completely turn around a disappointing league campaign Solskjaer was rewarded the permanent manager's position at Manchester United. Fans are hopeful that the former legendary striker can help bring back the Premier League trophy to Old Trafford.

20 Legend.

Doesn't seem that long ago if you've popped into the De Gea thread over the last couple of weeks. :nervous:

6. Roy Keane (5)

Premier League Appearances - 309 (17)
Overall Appearances - 458 (22)
Premier League Goals - 33
Overall Goals - 51
Position - Centre Midfield

In 1993, Roy Keane had just been voted relegated Nottingham Forest's best player. Brian Clough had called Keane, "the hottest prospect in football right now", but knew he faced a struggle to take the Irish player into the Championship. So they arranged to sell Keane to a then Premier League powerhouse. Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish (then manager of Blackburn) agreed a deal to see Keane arrive at the Lancashire club. Keane had agreed to go. Luckily for Manchester United fans across the world, Blackburn had messed up the paperwork and then shut down for the weekend. Which allowed wily old Scot, Sir Alex Ferguson to get involved. He phoned up Roy Keane and told him he could get him signed that weekend. Crisis averted, Roy Keane a man who would end up winning so much for Manchester United, had finally arrived.

There was no guarantee that Keane would establish himself in the first team right away, despite costing a British record transfer. Roy Keane had Robson and Ince in front of him in the pecking order. However, Reds who have watched Roy Keane play football know that he simply crushes everyone and everything in front of him and by the end of the season Keane was established as a Manchester United first team regular. In his first season his intense desire and drive would see Manchester United crowned Premier League champions for a second successive year and also beat Chelsea 4-0 at Wembley as Keane lifted his first F.A. Cup.

This would be his first year of a thirteen year stay at the club that would go down in legend as Roy Keane poured every single ounce of blood and swear into the shirt. He would stop at nothing on the football pitch to ensure that Manchester United got the win and when he finally left in 2006 he would have collected seven Premier League titles, Four F.A. Cup trophies and a Champions League win in 1999.

Roy Keane famously does not feel he deserves his Champions League win as he was suspended for the final. However, the semi-final against Juventus in Turin is possibly remembered as the greatest performance by any Manchester United player in history. That night Keane was a man possessed, scoring a great header to start United's recovery from a 2-0 deficit and then his constant passing and harassing of Juventus players ensured United would go onto be in the 1999 final. When Roy Keane was asked what he thought about all the coverage he got for his excellent man of the match performance in the game he simply replied "embarrassing". But that's just Roy Keane.

If you are young enough to have never seen Roy Keane in his pomp go and track down videos. My words fail to do justice to a player who simply gave his all to a United shirt. His greatest failure would be that he expected everyone else to be as dedicated as him. He would cover every blade of grass in a game, he wouldn't give the opposition a minute and he was great technically as well. Once he won the ball back, he'd set up an attack with his intricate passing.

Ultimately, his refusal to accept other players' mediocrity cost him his career at Old Trafford after he was released following an interview with MUTV in which he criticised many of the club's young players. At this time Roy Keane was quite injury prone and was not the all encompassing force that he once was, nevertheless fans were gutted to see one of the all time greats leave Old Trafford. Despite the rather unceremonious circumstances around his exit, manager Alex Ferguson clearly had great respect for Keane calling him "The best midfield player in the world of his generation", in a prearranged statement.

Roy Keane to this day is still a massively influential player in Manchester United's DNA. It's not rare to here fans after a drab 1-0 loss exclaim, "Roy Keane wouldn't have let that happen", and it's true. Roy Keane gave his all to the shirt and if everyone had the passion and desire that Keane has, we'd have won even more trophies in our clubs incredibly successful history.

Been supporting Utd as a 10 year old since '79 and Robson and Keane are still my favourite players. Talented, gave 100% every time and had the will to win.

5. David Beckham (10)

Premier League Appearances - 237 (28)
Overall Appearances - 356 (38)
Premier League Goals - 62
Overall Goals - 85
Position - Right Midfielder

Some of you on this website reading this forum right now would not be here, would not be a Manchester United fan and would not even waste your time with this whole football malarkey without David Beckham. An entire generation of football fans call Beckham their favourite, there's a group of twenty something males in Engnd who can track their life based on the midfielder's hairstyles. (Is there anyone brave enough to admit they tried his mohawk?) He is an absolute icon of the game and one of the most popular footballers ever.

It all started in front of 16,649 fans on September 23rd 1992. Manchester United made the 200 mile trip to Brighton to take part in a League Cup second round game. Beckham had to settle for a place on the bench that day, however with 20 minutes left, Ferguson would tell Beckham to get ready, it was time for his debut. "I was so excited I bounced up of my seat and crack: I hit my head on the dugout" Beckham would later recall, his youthful exuberance didn't make much of a mark that night, but he had fulfilled a childhood dream of playing for Manchester United.

After this Beckham signed a professional contract with Manchester United in January 1993. His reserve exploits with players like Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes had made a name for the young London based midfielder and many clubs tried to sign David Beckham on loan. He would go to Preston on loan for a short period in the 1994/1995 season, before being recalled for the latter part of the season making his Premier League debut for the club in a game against Leeds United. Although the 1994/1995 season would end in disappointment for the Red Devils as they failed to win a trophy, David Beckham would start to establish himself in the first team and would make over ten appearances for Manchester United by the end of the season.

After the end of the 1994/95 season Sir Alex Ferguson made the unusual step of letting numerous first team players leave (Kanchelskis, Ince and Hughes) and didn't sign anyone to replace them. However, Fergie's massive faith in his young players was justified as United won a league and cup double. David Beckham established himself as United's right midfielder, playing forty times for Manchester United that season, and setting up a winning goal for Eric Cantona in the FA Cup final.

Beckham continued to play regularly for Manchester United and his work ethic and fabulous crossing ability meant that he had become a first team fixture at United at this point. However, his rise to stardom was quickened when facing Wimbledon in August 1996, when in the 90th minute of a match he noticed Neil Sullivan off his line and managed to lob him from inside his own half. That season would see Beckham be named PFA Young Player of the year and he would help Manchester United win the Premier League once again.

There was one more final piece to the puzzle and it came in 1997 after Eric Cantona's shock retirement. After the United legend retired, the coveted number seven shirt come up for grabs, and there was only one candidate who could truly carry the weight of the shirt. Nowadays David Beckham is known affectionately as DB7, but he only got this shirt almost five years after his first appearance in the Manchester United red.

There are so many great David Beckham moments at the club that this post could easily be twenty times as long. The clubs historic Champions League win in 1999 will be forever remembered by the club, and United's two last minute goals came courtesy of David Beckham corners. His accuracy with free kicks, corners and crossing meant that he would have incredible assissts through his Manchester United career and his goal scoring record wasn't bad as well.

Overall in his time at the club, David Beckham would win six Premier League trophies (he was only a first team regular for eight seasons at the club) a Champions League medal and Two FA Cups. It is a shame he didn't stay longer and really cement his legacy. Nevertheless a true legend of Manchester United football club and a player who will live long in the memory.

Criminally underrated as a player Becks. For us 90s babies, he was an icon. He got a whole generation of kids spending their afternoons practicing free-kicks and crosses. Really sad he left when he did, the team could have definitely used him in central midfield when Scholes got injured.

4. Cristiano Ronaldo (2)

Premier League Appearances -157 (39)
Overall Appearances - 244 (48)
Premier League Goals - 84
Overall Goals - 118
Position - Right Winger

In the summer of 2003, Manchester United played Sporting in a friendly. Now legend has it that Ronaldo's performance that day convinced United to sign him. It didn't quite work out that way, United would never have signed a player based on ninety minutes of a friendly. Still Rio Ferdinand would recall years later, going up to Fergie after the game, "Are we going to get him or not?"

Luckily, United did get their man and Ronaldo signed that summer for about 12 million pounds. The young Portuguese winger would arrive at Old Trafford to sign his contract. He didn't bring any clothes as he had assumed he would be loaned back to Sporting CP for a year. Ferguson told him to go back and bring his stuff to Manchester. He would make his debut eight days later.

That home debut is one of the most memorable in football. Coming on in a Premier League game against Bolton, Ronaldo absolutely stole the show and although he didn't score in the 4-0 win his contributions excited the Stretford End. "There's only one Ronaldo" rang out the song from the terraces as the young pacey winger jinxed and tricked his way against the Bolton defence. George Best remarked that it was "the most exciting debut I'd ever seen" and it's hard to argue with his assertion.

Ronaldo would be used sparingly that year. He would only start 15 Premier League games. However his talent was clear to see and at the end of the season he got the all important first goal in an FA Cup final against Millwall. The first of many trophies had arrived.

How the trophies flowed after that. In his third season at the club, he added the League Cup to his growing trophy collection, scoring the third in a 4-0 rout of Wigan. Despite this Ronaldo had been accused of lacking end product as the winger had only scored 12 times in over 47 appearances. As Ronaldo went to the World Cup that summer, many people felt the winger didn't have the "footballing brain" to kick on from his initial promise.

Things came to a head in the World Cup itself when Ronaldo represented Portugal and got involved with Wayne Rooney in an incident that led to England being knocked out of the World Cup. Ronaldo would ask to leave United as he thought the club hadn't protected him enough. Ferguson and United refused to accept the transfer request.

In his fourth season at the club, Ronaldo exploded. His form saw him score over twenty goals for Manchester United as they were crowned Premier League champions. He added a diversity to his game which saw him bamboozle defenders with his skill, before slamming the ball home. His range of passing, goalscoring ability, deadly pace and incredibly deceptive strength made him a nightmare for defenders.

He followed that up with the 2007/2008 season which will go down as one of the best seasons in Manchester United's history. Scoring an incredible 42 goals, Ronaldo would propel Manchester United to the Premier League and the Champions league. He would go onto win the Premier League's Golden Boot, become the top scorer in the whole of Europe and eventually come runner up in the Ballon d'Or. Not bad for a young Portuguese winger with no consistency. His role in the 08 Champions League final will always be remembered as he put Manchester United in front with one of his towering headers in a crunch game against Chelsea. Truly one of the best seasons ever had by someone in a United shirt.

His final season came in the 2008/2009 season as United reclaimed the Premier League trophy. Ronaldo would score another 26 goals and become the first United player since George Best to win the Ballon d'Or award. By the time he left United in 2009 he had become the perfect footballer. His training and dedication turning him into a phenomenon that will go down in United's history.

To this day Ronaldo is still chanted about at Manchester United. Viva Ronaldo is one of the Stretford End's most popular chants, as United sing about the lanky Portuguese winger who went on to become the best footballer in the world while under United's tutelage.

Still can't believe we sold him. I know he wanted to leave but we should have just thrown all the money at him. Best player I've watched at OT, love Scholes, Keane and Giggs but he was the most talented. His improvement over the years was incredible.

3. Ryan Giggs (4)

Premier League Appearances - 522 (110)
Overall Appearances - 802 (161)
Premier League Goals - 109
Overall Goals - 168
Position - Left Wing

Ryan Giggs enjoyed a twenty four year career at Manchester United. Twenty four years. During that time he would make 963 appearances for Manchester United. Bobby Charlton made over 200 fewer appearances for Manchester United than Ryan Giggs did, and Giggs did it in an era when footballers had to be at the top of the game physically. While football increasingly became a young man's game, Ryan Giggs would continue his domination of the footballing world until he finally retired in 2014. He would retire the most decorated footballer in history.

Over his career at Manchester United he would win thirteen premier league titles, two Champions League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, a Club World Cup and nine charity shields. He was the first player in history to win back to back Young Player of the Year awards (in 1992 and 1993) and would win PFA Player of the year in 2009, the same year in which he would win Sports Personality of the Year. On top of all that he holds the records for the most assists in Premier League history (271) and scored in the first 21 years of the Premier League. A pretty successful career all in all.

As I don't have time to go into detail in his career, I'll just pick two high points that will forever live in my memory. In 1999, United were chasing an historic treble. In their way were a fantastic Arsenal side, who we were playing in an FA Cup Semi Final replay. United were drawing 1-1 but down to ten men after Roy Keane got sent off. In the 109th minute a weary Patrick Vieira passed Giggs the ball just inside the United half. What happened next is the stuff of legend as Giggs ducked and weaved his way past the Arsenal defenders and finished off a wonderful run with an explosive shot that tucked into the top corner. United wouldn't look back and would complete an historic treble.

The next moment comes from the 2008 Champions League final. Having assisted Teddy Sheringham for his equaliser in Munich, Ryan Giggs was on the hunt for his second Champions League medal. Giggs had come on in the last few minutes of normal time as the game petered out to a penalty shoot out. It looked as if we would lose until John Terry missed with a famous slip. As both teams went on to sudden death, Ryan Giggs confidently slotted past Petr Cech. It would prove to be the winning penalty and 17 years after making his debut, Ryan Giggs would once again lift the Champions League trophy.

His style was reinvented so many times that it is hard to talk about in this summary. In his younger days Giggs was known for his extraordinary pace, his fantastic close dribbling skill and his ability to cross the ball into the box. As he got older his ability to control play, find a pass and make perfectly timed runs meant he was able to continue well into his late 30s.

Giggs has done it all at Manchester United. Teen icon, respected mentor, veteran playmaker even a stint as player manager at one point. He will go down not just a Manchester United legend or a Premier League legend, but as one of the best players to ever lace up his boots. His place on this list is not just down to longevity but due to his own miraculous high standards.

Yes but to be fair, it's a list of players that fans have actually seen. Or I guess it ought to be...otherwise I'd have had Denis Law in my top three - love everything about him.
Denis is my top 1, we've had some magical players but Denis was the most exciting, he was electric!

2. Eric Cantona (3)

Premier League Appearances - 142 (1)
Overall Appearances - 184 (1)
Premier League Goals - 64
Overall Goals - 82
Position - Striker

At the dawn of the Premier League era, Leeds chairmen Bill Fotherby rang up Manchester United to ask about signing Dennis Irwin. Sir Alex Ferguson told Leeds that Irwin was not for sale, but enquired about the enigmatic Frenchman. Fergie knew his team needed a striker to add potency to their attack. On the 26th November 1992, Cantona joined the Red Devils. It was probably the most important signing in the history of Manchester United football club.

To put that statement into perspective, you have to recall what was happening in the league at the time. Despite coming close the season before, United were forced to endure a 26 year wait for the first division title. Even though great things were expected, in the middle of November Manchester United were languishing in tenth place. Fellow attacker Dion Dublin had broken his leg and was ruled out for seven months. What promised to be a successful season was turning out to be another false dawn. Then Cantona arrived.

If you've watched Cantona play, the first thing you recall is his confidence and assuredness as he played football. His presence on the pitch illuminated those around him, he was peerless at Manchester United. His towering size meant that he would dwarf those around him, yet his technique was as intricate and precise as anyone else in the sport. He would play football like a ballerina, gliding around the football pitch, it wasn't like watching a typical sports player but more akin to an artist perfecting his craft.

United only lost two games in the league after Cantona arrived and would go onto win the inaugural Premier league by ten points. He would score nine league goals in his first season at Old Trafford but his contribution was much more than that, often setting up chances for those around him. As Sir Alex Ferguson would recall, "He illuminated Old Trafford. The place was a frenzy every time he touched the ball."

The next year was even better for Eric. He scored 25 goals in all competitions (including two in an FA Cup final) on the way to helping United to the double. He was also voted PFA player of the Year as well as coming third in the Ballon d'Or award ceremony. The following season was the only season in his five year stay at Old Trafford in which he didn't win the Premier League. It's also the season that will be remembered for Eric Cantona kicking a Crystal Palace fan in the face after being sent off. He would be banned for the rest of the season, but not before uttering probably one of the most famous quotes in world football at a press conference following the incident.

"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you very much."

The following year he returned to the first team and once again helped United to the double, including scoring the only goal of the game in a match against Liverpool in the FA Cup final. He would score another 19 goals that season, important goals that helped United haul back Newcastle's ten point lead that opened up midway through the campaign. As United lifted the FA Cup that season, Eric Cantona became the first player from outside Britain to captain his team to FA Cup glory.

His fifth and final year came in the 1996/97 season. Although Cantona was only 30 he chose to retire at the peak of his powers, once again being instrumental as United won the Premier League. His retirement sent shock waves through the sport, but Cantona simply said "I stopped playing football because I'd done as much as I could. I needed something which was going to excite me as much as football had excited me."

After only five years at United, Cantona immortalised himself as a legend. Neither before or after Eric has anyone as cool kicked a football. The king of Old Trafford, "Ooh ah Cantona" is still sung by the Stretford End on a regular basis. A true United icon.

1. Paul Scholes (1)
Premier League Appearances - 404 (95)
Overall Appearances - 577 (141)
Premier League Goals - 107
Overall Goals - 155
Position - Centre Midfield

So here it is. Number one on the list. A player who came through United's youth ranks, won countless trophies at the club and always gave his all to the shirt. There isn't many better players chosen to represent Manchester United than Paul Scholes.

At the age of 14, Salford born Paul Scholes signed for Manchester United. He would stay at the club until he turned 38. In his twenty four year stay at the club, he would win eleven Premier League titles, three FA Cups, two Champions League trophies and two League Cup trophies. But more than that, the midfield maestro would pull the strings for Manchester United for 19 different seasons, ensuring not only success but a type of football that made Old Trafford applaud the genius who was playing in front of them.

Starting his career as a secondary striker, Paul Scholes made his debut against Port Vale in 1994. He scored two goals to send United to the next round. He would go onto make 25 total appearances for Manchester United that year. Although he was promising as a striker, there were a number of players ahead of him in the pecking order and Scholes would remain around the first team for a number of seasons without ever becoming a first team regular.

For decades to come, United fans of a certain age will be telling stories about Paul Scholes' passing exploits. His passing was not only precise, but also timed to perfection to start an immeasurable number of United attacks. It was in the 1997/98 season when Paul Scholes played in his famous number 18 shirt in which he started to shine. His position in Manchester United's central midfield meant that he could use his excellent range of passing as well as timing his deadly runs in the box to add a goal threat.

Much like with Giggs, it would be a waste of time for me to try and summarise his career in one small redcafe post. There's simply too many highlights and too many great moments to pick apart and dissect. During his time at Old Trafford he would score numerous goals in finals, contribute to ten successful premier league campaigns, retire, come out of retirement , help United to another Premier League trophy before finally hanging up his boots for good in 2013.

As United dominated the start of the Premier League era, Paul Scholes will forever be entwined with United's success throughout the 90's and the start of the new millennium. Countless players have heaped praise on the Salford born midfielder, with players like Fabregas, Henry, Xavi and Ronaldo calling him the best player they've ever seen. Safe to say that there aren't many footballers with a better reputation than Paul Scholes.

Scholes remains third on Manchester United's all time appearance list with 718 appearances for United. He also sneaks into the top ten scorers list with 155 goals. His legacy will live on at Manchester United as one of the most talented players of a generation who graced the Old Trafford turf for almost two decades.

Could have worked on his tackling a bit though.

Sorry for messing up the Pearson thing! Sorry for messing up the numbers near the end (that was a bastard to fix!)

Thank you for the 210+ votes. Thank you for everyone who replied to the thread.

We will do this again in a few years time!

well done, great reads (remember the last one too).

Am I blind... Can't see Schmeicel?

And Robson 13th... :(:nono:. Almost as bad as Best position.

Great top two though. :)

Looking forward to the 2022 thread.

Hmmm. The Great Dane should be there. Might be another that I need to add in somewhere. The spreadsheet I used got convoluted and if I spelled it wrong...

I’ll check and add him in sneakily tonight.
