Surprised there isn't already a thread on this after the opening game (2 of the 3 reds were fair for me)

Anyway, did not know the VAR remit extended to diving, but really glad to see it.

If Ream hadn't been booked, would they have been able to look at it?

It's pretty dumb - why they can't just check diving for the ref whenever and advise him to give a yellow is beyond me.

Doesn't he clip him? Looks like he misses the guy in the challenge but then might get him on the follow through slide which then knocks his foot sideways. Still goes down too easily mind.

It’s very refreshing compared to the Premier League.

Yeah, agree. Harsh to book for a dive considering no-touch diving cheats will also only be booked. And also, players know they need to go down if they feel fouled if they want to have a chance of VAR taking a look.

VAR has caused players to go down more often, and is now looking to punish them for it.

Didn't think much of this during the game but Rooney has a point here.

If you win the ball with your foot but then catch your opponent high with force, it's deemed a foul...

Yeah I thought it was the correct decision until I heard Rooney out. But it's pointless arguing with someone who is associated with refereeing as they'll always just back the ref, or at least on most occasions.

It worked out but I don't really understand how or why this applies to the mistaken identity rule. I also don't understand why they let the free kick play out before VAR intervened. They could have scored from the set piece for them to go back before the set piece which seems odd.

VAR on corner kicks bit redundant when the keeper can quickly take the goal kick if he knows its a dubious one

I think the new rules successfully made the tempo of games much higher.

I think it’s more beneficial for attackers who knows its dubious, they will always look to take it quickly.

He goes down "easily" because the tackle changes his gate and his legs touch each others. It's like a tap tackle in rugby, a small touch is often enough to trip the runner.

Anybody who is mad at var for actually overturning something like that dive is just clearly biased against the US and is being driven by that. He doesn't remotely touch him and it is 2 steps later when he theatrically acts like he got fecking sniped by an assassin. Considering yellow card accumulation can be a big deal this was the one time we should all just applaud the system for actually working.

I hate the simulation and the constant complaining that these players do. Clamp down hard at the early games to set the tone.

I have been watching the Argentina league over the last few months and the diving and simulation is out of control. It's worse than anything I have seen before. Glad the WC is trying to do something about it. Maybe what they do here will trickle down to the leagues.

Plus it was Almiron, probably one of the most dislikable Newcastle players ever. So that also needs to be taken into account.

He dived, plane and simple.

From a front angle I couldn't tell if his foot clipped the other leg or not to be honest. Certainly possible.

Not sure if he touched him. Of course, the way VAR is implemented in this tournament, there isn't a whole frame by frame dissection of the event.

I think they basically wiped out the free kick. A bit late on call to the ref to review but really the right call when it comes to tournament football and YC accumulation. I don't know if 'mistaken identity' should be used in regular season or even CL.

Appreciate the quickness in VAR review but I kinda wish we the fans could see a bit more. Maybe that's on the broadcasters.

Btw, are they really using auto-offside calls? It was mentioned but not sure if it really is vs VAR review

Feckin hell! Are you a masochist?

Seriously though: I've always thought it was cultural, some do it more than others and the Argies are infamous for it.
Now I'm not sure as it looks to have spread to most places. Unfortunately.

I love it. I mean, the football is messy (at best) but I love the passion of the supporters. And anything can happen.

Honestly, I would scrap VAR tomorrow. But I don’t hate how it’s used so far in the tournament. Aside from that opening match there’s not been delays, unnecessary interventions, referees miffed that they haven’t been on camera for 10 minutes. I’ve barely noticed it

I do enjoy watching South American football sometimes, it’s a fight and novela with the odd bit of footy thrown in too.

The new corner rule is bizarre and stupid

VAR can be used to overturn a corner if it wasn’t actually a corner but can’t be used to give one where a goal kick was wrongly given

One of the worst referees ever in that Scotland Haiti game. 44 free kicks. Only 2 cards until after the 90th minute, and one of those after the 90th minute wasn't even a foul

Well it can also be used to reverse second yellow cards if VAR think it was wrong, but can't be used to give one if they think it should be given. It also can't be used to overturn first yellow cards either.

What the VAR & ref did when he booked the US player and reversed it to the Paraguayan player for the dive was wrong. The play had already restarted from the freekick that was awarded.

Michael Oliver is injured and will miss the Ivory Coast-Ecuador game :)

They're tying themselves in knots trying to fix fundamentally broken VAR.

Still it's an inconsistent shambles with what actually gets reviewed being totally selective and the laws of the game just enforced on vibes and "what the game expects" basis, not what's written down.

Yeah, that game blew away my "refs doing a good job" take. So far, only one bad ref. But it was really, really bad.
Algerian team. Let's see how many other games they get and how they change or not. Wonder if the Somali visa brouhaha had any effect on this.

Are refs assigned based on association? Like if involving a UEFA & AFC teams, those ref teams are excluded? Or just exclude based on country?

What’s clear to me is that football is plain better when you get on with it. The refs at this tournament have been quick to make decisions and to keep things moving. Even VAR has corrected mistakes in no time at all.

Our domestic game has gotten bogged down in multiple ways. The refs slow the game rather than keep things moving, linesman wait too long to raise the flag, VAR takes an eternity. On top of all that we have horrendous time wasting and broadcasters who fill every minute with incessant replays going over decisions in slow motion. It’s refreshing that even the replays are few and far between at this tournament; there’s not much benefit to a dozen other angles once a decision has been made.

So many calls in our sport are subjective, even after seeing an incident a hundred times opinions remain divided; it’s rarely clear cut. That being the case, perhaps it is best to just get on with it, and that’s what the officials at this tournament are doing well so far.

ESPN think Messi was a red, (but obviously not going to happen for commercial reasons). I wonder if VAR official on this game will get the same treatment as guy who didn't give Mbappe what probably was a pen in the France game.

Chip in the ball offside is definitely better than the choose which frame VAR want method for sure. Still like in the CL and league football reffing is basically just subservient to whatever works out best financially.

The refs have done a great job of keeping the games flowing. Not too many soft calls, not nearly as many as I have been accustomed to seeing as of late, and it makes for better games. The players are definitely spending less time rolling around and we are treated to a better spectacle. Hope they keep it up.

There have been mistakes of course.

That non-penalty on Mbappe seems like an atrocious call from the ref and is exactly why the ref in the VAR room should simply tell the on pitch ref what the correct decision is (rather than have him waste time looking at the monitor).
