Part of the handball problem is the directives change all the time. This overcomplicates things for referees.

Worst decision you'll see at the World Cup. A finger brushing off that goblin's face and it's a penalty.

Refs referee on names and narratives.

If I were Messi or Ronaldo I would dive every game. Every single one. That’s almost as bad as Ronaldos pen v Ghana

Unbelievable how bad a team of referees can be. How is it possible to get fractional calls wrong so often.

it's now obvious WC is corrupted. 2 non-pens given vs Poland, every match is basically a shitshow

That’s probably up there as one of the worst VAR decisions I’ve seen full stop.

It's messed up. Like in the first Argentina game they chalked out offside goals where there's a hair over the line. And there was a great deal of skill being involved. But now penalties are being given for things goalkeepers and defenders can't even help. It's destroying football. Goals should be difficult to score and there should be an element of skill or a clear and obvious offence.

It seems refs are still rather scared to not give a pen if VAR calls on them to check the screen.

Messi review never a penalty... Griezmann goal ridiculously disallowed.

VAR as is harms the spectacle and still mistakes anyway.

Wow the French are claiming that the ref wasn't actually allowed at all to deny the goal because the game resumed (Tunisia kickoff) for a second before he whistled the end of the game for the first time.

If that's true that's a breach of procedure regardless of the actual validity of the goal.

That Messi VAR penalty was ridiculous. One of the worst decisions in football history.

Are we sure about that? Seems strange that a kickoff would change anything. There were games were teams got a penalty after final whistle and the game ended (atletico vs leverkusen) which is far worse. Sometimes the var intervenes pretty late. I dont think anything can stop a rewind if the var + ref decides so, but what do I know

It seems obvious the refs were told to help a bit to make sure Argentina goes through. There is no way someone can look at that replay and overturn the initial decision.
Almost the entire media and loads of fans are itching to see Messi lift the WC. All the pundits want to downplay rest of the team so that they can talk about how Messi is dragging them into the knockouts. And even when Messi has an ok-ish game, they keep talking about how others are playing well only so that Messi will win it in his last hurrah. Most of the media completely look like the Messi version of Piers Morgan.

And FIFA will be only too happy to nudge it a bit in that direction. After all good publicity is what they want in this WC.

Even more if it’s Messi. Cant touch Messi, aye.

was it Ronaldo’s pen in the first game that was almost non existent too? If that happens to any other guys, the pens are not given

Yeah, makes no sense, VAR is there to point to something to the ref but it seems if they go check it they think they need to change their decision. Bonkers really.

With pens like the Argentina one yesterday football is truly going to the gutter.

It seems like FIFA will do anything to make sure CR and Messi go as far as possible in this tournament. They are by far the most popular football players in Arab countries and they need them to make this world cup a success.

The law is an arse. They have to make it clear. The Griezman goal should have been offside from the go.
That Maguire own goal for United should have been offside too.

No way is that Griezmann goal offside with the current version of the offside law. Yes he's standing offside when the ball is played first. The ball is deliberately played after that when he's then onside and it should stand. It was ridiculous all around.

Just another example of how all the law changes and VAR are ruining football as entertainment.

Whatever about penalty calls and offsides.

The amount of clear corners not being given is shocking.

Odd, don't see any mention in this thread of how Massimo Busacca, head of FIFA refereeing, admitted Portugal's penalty was wrongly awarded.

Funny enough, days before I was complaining how VAR ends up being a black box where they choose what to put in front of the ref and how much potential there was for that not to be about corruption but to evolve into "entertainment management".

God's scriptwriter: peno to Portugal with Cristiano sitting on the bench. It just had to be.

It certainly looks that way. It's alarming how blatant they are about it as well.
Fifa need this WC to be a success and will make sure it happens.

Argentina are almost guaranteed to make it to at least semifinals IMO. No way FIFA will allow them go out against Australia, Netherlands or the US. They beat us fair and square as we were terrible, they did not need the referee to help them at every step. You could even see the ref was under pressure, basically the minute Messi stood up and put it at the penalty spot, that's before referee was even asked to go and review that play. He basically told the ref to go and get them that penalty.

If they are in semifinals, they are 100% getting a penalty in that game as well.

Semi is supposed to be Brazil so all bets are off then.
Wouldn’t it be amazing for Messi to score a winning penalty in stoppage time there in Doha? Though you may need him to retake it 3-4 times before he eventually converts one. Shouldn’t be a problem.

It's as if they are hellbent on making everything about this world cup as horrible as it possibly can be. Location? Check. Atmosphere? Check. Timing? Check. Refs? Check.

Offside should really be based on the position of the feet, this single-hair offside when both players have arms in active positions is silly.

That was ruled offside by a centimeter or less. At that level, the attacker should get the benefit imo. And in any case why did they ask the ref to review on screen anyway?

Only conclusion I can come to is that some of the refs in the VAR room don't know the rules

Can't believe that stat: Modric has never scored at a WC finals...
