What’s the point in VAR if that’s not a penalty?

A new season but English refs sabotaging VAR still remains because they never wanted it in the first place.

The decisions lately have been staggeringly bad.

First Ronaldo challenge wasn't a penalty and this Shaw handball was.

The second penalty call for us is the problem. Looked a definite penalty to me.

All 3 were pens..

the penalty or handball rules make no sense anymore.. they just make it up as they go along.. whatever they feel like doing on the day.

I think Ronaldo goes down into the contact on both occasions, and if he just keeps moving forward the contact happens and he gets the pen.

HOW is that second one not a penalty for Ronaldo. It literally doesn't get any more clear cut. What's the point of VAR if they don't overturn that? I'm amazed.

There needs to be some accountability from the VAR teams as well, it's still just shit.

The problem is both our penalty decisions were so quickly disregarded by VAR when both of them looked quite stonewall. Surely, should have at least let the on-field ref take a look.

I can see why they wanted the handball reviewed but to not even review the second one on Ronaldo is a disgrace. That was a clear foul. Seems like they’re being influenced by home fans despite being sat miles away.

Every single official in that game today should be punished absolute travesty officiating today !

I hate that there is never any repercussion for these C*ants when their decisions can literally cost you a title and trophy

I think he was right in the pen for West Ham, and not awarding a pen for Ronaldo earlier in the second half. However, Zouma's challenge was a stonewall penalty. To not even call the ref for that and give it another check is unexplainable.

He should’ve been sent to look at them all. No qualms with the West Ham penalty, but the other two were instantly dismissed and it shouldn’t be so arbitrary. VAR has not been to the benefit of the game at all.

First Ronaldo one borderline but not a clear and obvious error.

Second Ronaldo one was a clear penalty and the fact it wasn’t overturned was laughable.

Shaw one obviously shouldn’t be a handball but the current handball rules are extremely dumb, so correctly given as a penalty.

Makes last season even more ridiculous with the continual lengthy stoppages and micro analysis of minor contact, almost looking to give pens.

But Ronaldo knocks the ball past the defender and he leaves his leg out in the way of Cristiano. I honestly think that’s more of a pen than Zouma.

I can't remember why I joined this war.
What the hell is going on here? Since when is a player lounging in for a tackle and not hitting the ball and the opposition player going into the out stretched leg not a pen? I could see there being a point if the Wet Ham players didn't attempt a mistimed tackling and Ronaldo would have just run into them, but that's not what happened.

I get it last season every tiny bit of contact was a penalty and it was too much, but the answer can't be to not call anything at all anymore.

Ronaldo could have easily avoided it if we wanted to, he was looking for it. The ball also was arguably already out of play, which nowadays matters (under the 'consequence' part).

Starting to think they should stick to offsides, after watching Ronaldo get chopped out and giving nothing, and then giving a pen against Shaw because the ball hit his arm when it was blasted at him a metre away.

It's supposed to revisit decisions that refs miss (or usually don't have the courage for), but the VAR officials don't have the courage to intervene on anything but a technicality.

The second penalty appeal was stonewall. The West Ham defender just clattered Ronaldo.

Also, it looked like there was encroachment on the West Ham penalty. Should it have been retaken?

If you are already on the way down before the contact is made.....

That was absolutely incredible. You won't see 2 more blatant penalties than the 2 on Ronaldo. Refs can make mistakes but how can VAR look at that and think "no penalty"?

Ole needs to make a huge deal out of this post game. Forget "we won anyway". This is the time he needs to rip in.

The handball was soft as hell and it just rubbed salt into the wounds.

So the VAR changes mean just not bothering with it?

Zouma misses the ball, cleans Ronaldo out, and it's not even worthy of a review? Even Zouma thought it was going to be given.

I don't expect anything less from Atkinson though.

Ole needs to go full Klopp and complain about us not getting any penalties or Ronaldo not getting any protection from the refs.

He could easily have avoided it but you could say the same about most fouls. He doesn't have to avoid an outstretched leg that's blocking him, it was a clear foul, anywhere else on the pitch it would have been given.

Disgusting from the VAR official to not give that last pen for Ronaldo. It's clear as you like so I hope some investigation will happen, seems very underhand to steer the game.

Don't get rid of VAR, it is not a fecking AI who is making wrong decisions. It is simply incompetent referees sitting there (and in the pitch too).

Keep VAR and get better referees. Add consequences to shit refereeing. Cases like Zouma's incident in Ronaldo could have been tolerated before cause the ref might miss them, but right now it is simply inexcusable. Based on that case alone, the VAR referee of today should be demoted for a few matches. Next time, he might bother calling the ref for a check when something similar happens.

But why should he avoid it? There’s even the argument that he won’t get to the ball if he has to go around a defender so why should he?

If you are looking for contact, it is not always a penalty. Honestly, I think that was a dive from Ronaldo, he had no intention at all trying to get the ball, just was looking for a pen.

Zouma's case on the other hand, clear penalty.
