Gaming Resident Evil 9: Requiem

Terrific reviews especially for a loud blockbuster RE game which don’t usually score as high as indie darlings and others

Definitely on my must play list now

It's arriving Friday. Wife got it for my birthday as she saw all the "catch up on Resident Evil lore" on my YouTube history, I felt like such a child in the moment that she told me

This will be the first non-Nintendo AAA game I will play since Arkham Knight.

This game looks stunning on PS5 PRO. Just seen the Df video on it. Maybe, the biggest gap we've seen between a Pro and base Ps5 game.

Can't wait to play it.

Only reason im hesitating to buy it at full price is the length. However there is nothing else new atm. Can remember going through the mgs 3 remake and you're finished after a day or 2 of playing.

Played a few minutes last night at midnight and that intro, walking in the rain might be the best visuals I've ever seen. Holy shit.
That's on PS5 Pro, will get it on PC for my second playthrough.

Am I gonna be jealous of PS Pro owners? Can't justify an upgrade for a single game surely. Just bought a portal recently and barely use it.

You want to see it on PC with proper ray tracing then. Looks fantastic, they've finally got it kind-of-right.

No FOV slider though, absolute weapons  Thankfully, won't take long for a MOD to appear.

Speaking of which, for those of you on PC, run Path Tracing or nothing. As usual with the engine, the implementation of RT is either very good at max, or dogshit all else. Hopefully the mod that helps fix it all gets updated shortly, I think for Village it came out the same day!

Man, I'm sure it does. What an intro all the same. Wanted to play on PlayStation first for a guaranteed smooth first playthrough. PC has been acting a bit funny with Arc Raiders, weird RAM related errors. Which may or not be on my PC's side, but don't want to take any chances!

Have you tried cleaning your motherboard, and reseating? Hopefully it's a fix and not a failing module mate!

I have to say, it is running very well on PC even with Denuvo. I've not yet had any close enemy encounters though, that's when the issues will rear. But I'm playing in the same room as my Mrs on her PS5, and the difference is incredibly noticeable, they still haven't cracked the raytracing, but it's far better than Village (again though, only with path tracing...the others modes look fantastic until you move the mouse, same as Village and RE4 remake).

Does it have DLSS4 right away? Because raw RT won‘t work on my build.

Yeah it has it all, including frame generation. In fact, FG doesn't feel as latency maddening as usual, though if you can use reflex I'd experiment (on+boost feels sluggish for me).

I can hit 70fps with no DLSS or FG (1440p), but with both on (and quality) with path tracing, it's hitting around 120-130 and the latency isn't bad at all. So all in all, it's way more optimised than I ever expected, even using the torch is minimal impact for once

Definitely considering it, but the crashes/memory errors have only been happening with one game, Arc Raiders, and doing some research not the only one so hoping it's not something serious on hardware side. Will not take it lightly though and as you say better do some proper checks.

Nice, great you can see a direct comparison in one room. Your wife is using the base PS5 or pro? Yeah village and RE4R didn't quite crack RT, great we're finally getting closer with a RE title.

Still work having a good clean and looking into it, high impact programs (like games) can highlight problems in weird ways even if it's on their end originally.

My youngest was having a problem with heat and blue screen downs with just Dark and Darker, I looked into it and weirdly enough it was the fan controller (little shit runs 12 fans in his case...don't ask!) and for some odd reason, that one game exposed a flaw in how it draws power. Now I like to think I know a lot about this stuff, but that one is still baffling

And yeah she's on base, but the pro version won't come close either since that's more about FSR anyway. Though that version does look to be running a reasonable hybrid RT build that can hold near 60fps, which still isn't worth the ridiculous price of the machine, but is interesting all the same.

All in all, so far it's a good looking game on all platforms. Not up there with Alan Wake 2 or Cyberpunk at the moment, but it's definitely a looker.

Sounds great.

I‘m fully lost to NBA2k this time and still got AlanWake2 untouched in the library so probably can wait for a sale.

AW2 is actually a better looking game than RE9. I wasn't as big a fan of it was I wanted to be, considering how much I love the first, but it's still very good. I just think they listened to too much of the criticism of the gameplay of the first, and went in the wrong direction.

As for RE9, given what people are saying about it's length and Leon's half of the game, I'd say wait and get it cheaper. I've played it for a bit and it's good so far, but not amazing must have from the off. Though that all being said, Loaded (cdkeys) have it for £42 at the moment...

Best graphics setting for base PS5? Even without HDR on it looks a little washed out.

Playing it on Switch 2 and it runs and looks beautiful. Does drop frames here and there but I’m not that allergic to it so barely notice.

I have to be honest, whilst not being perfect, the engine upgrades are impressive.

So I'm not surprised the Switch 2 version looks decent, people still sleep on that hardware in terms of visual trickery they've snuck into it.

It targets 60 FPS and holds it like half the time apparently, is at more than 50 for 90% of time, drops to 40 occasionally and very rarely below that. It could probably use a 40 FPS locked mode for anyone that can easily notice frame drops (I can’t). I think it’s meant to use DLSS upscaling which does work wonders as graphics are gorgeous. I can’t believe I’m playing a handheld game.

Yet another good port after Cyberpunk, Outlaws, Final Fantasy and recently Fallout. Seems like Switch will be able to hold its own for most of the big console releases for the next few years.

About 5 hours in (and an hour of that was me searching for something that was really easy to find) and I’m enjoying it. Had some doubts in the first hour and a half but they’ve settled.

I usually hate it when movies and games do the crappy one liners, so why is it so satisfying when Leon does it

Only played the first section of Grace and Leon. The contrast was so stark but also broke up the gameplay really nicely.

Looks amazing on my pc. The lack of haptic feedback sucks though.

Aargh, switch version is tempting a lot.

Not that far in and won't be able to fully get into it til next week but enjoying it so far.

I spent most of my time messing with the settings as usual

I like it so far, obviously we'll all agree the Grace sections are the best from the few I've played already. The Leon parts are actually a refreshing change up, I just hope the sections get a bit longer in between because it does kind of break the horror immersion and is very goofy.

If you are using a controller how are you best reducing input lag? Im playing with a dualsense. Also spent ages messing with graphics settings so got a impatient with finding ways to reduce to input lag the best.

I'm using mouse.

Are you using wired or BT? I assume it's a DS5, they are picky about the dongle. Also things like Frame generation and reflex settings can and will hurt the latency (with reflex, change that setting around, for me on+boost felt sluggish).

I’ve finished it! Took me about 11 hours overall. Played about 7 yesterday and and 4 today over my two days off. Don’t normally do that but I love RE. This is gameplay wise my favourite of the whole series. I enjoyed the story too even though that’s getting some criticism online - it’s RE not The Last of Us. It’s supposed to be a bit silly

9/10

I found wired made no difference this time. Yeah but playing on a 60 hz tv so need vsync on to disable screen tearing so no fgm. Did you say reflex on+boost made it more laggy? Chatgpt tells me to have it on that setting.

Chatgpt doesn't have human eyes nor reactions...jokes aside mate, try it just on or even off. You should do that in every game BTW, it's not a one size fits all solution.

Assuming you use the same lead for all games and haven't had this before, chances are it's the engine and most likely the DLSS/FSR settings more than anything. I'm out tonight, but if you have no luck remind me tomorrow and I'll plug mine in and try to duplicate it and fix for you.

Edit: I've just clicked you said tv too, check if it has a gaming response time setting, and if so change that around too. Even on my 165hz monitor I've had to mess with response times for the recent RE games.
