From the Guardian

Brighton have made Roberto De Zerbi their new manager, with the Italian signing a four-year deal.

The 43-year-old former Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk manager agreed final terms late on Sunday afternoon on a deal to succeed Graham Potter, who departed for Chelsea this month.

De Zerbi met with the club owner, Tony Bloom, the chief executive, Paul Barber, and the technical director, David Weir, a few days ago and flew into Sussex on Friday night before watching a behind-closed-doors friendly at the Amex Stadium on Saturday afternoon. As a mark of respect on the day of the Queen’s funeral, De Zerbi will not be formally introduced to the media until afternoon.

De Zerbi’s 14 months at Shakhtar came to an end in July, as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Shakhtar were top of the table when last season had to be abandoned.

Bloom said: “I am absolutely thrilled Roberto has agreed to become our new head coach. Roberto’s teams play an exciting and courageous brand of football and I am confident his style and tactical approach will suit our existing squad superbly.”

Weir said: “Roberto has shown his undoubted ability with his work in Italy and Ukraine, and what he achieved at Sassuolo certainly stands out. In his short spell with Shakhtar he enjoyed further success, leading the club to cup success and topping the Ukrainian league before the war brought an abrupt halt to his time there.

“We are delighted to welcome Roberto and we look forward to introducing him to our squad as well as providing all the support he needs to introduce his coaching philosophy and help the players continue their brilliant start to the season.”

Barber, who is also deputy chairman, said: “We looked at a range of excellent candidates but Roberto was our number one choice from the start and the only person we spoke to. It’s no secret our chairman is constantly monitoring potential coaches, both here in our domestic leagues, throughout Europe and across the world as part of our succession planning work.

“We feel Roberto is the ideal cultural and technical fit for Brighton, and the right person to continue the club’s progress and work with this outstanding group of players.”

De Zerbi joined Shakhtar in May 2021 and won the Ukrainian Super Cup last September. The 43-year-old has also managed a number of Italian clubs, most recently Sassuolo, whom he led to eighth-place finishes in Serie A in 2020 and 2021. His first stint in the top division with Palermo ended swiftly and unsuccessfully and he was unable to keep promoted Benevento in Serie A in 2018.

Potter left Brighton for Chelsea this month and De Zerbi is inheriting a team fourth in the Premier League. The club’s first game after the international break is at Liverpool on 1 October, after which they play at home to Tottenham on 8 October.
Pretty exciting appointment by Brighton. Would like to see them continue being the team they are, enjoyed them every time I watched them last season and this season.

It's been a long time coming, but with appointments like this becoming more common, it feels like the Big Sam/Pardew/Bruce/Hughes etc managerial merry-go-round for smaller PL clubs is now finally over.

Whether it's changing attitudes from owners or just the extra money around in the PL, it seems a lot more clubs of that level are more keen to take a chance on a "hipster" (i.e. good) manager than the supposed safe pair of hands with PL experience that would get the job every time a few years ago.

Listening to the Athletic's tactics podcast with James Horncastle who is adamant that De Zerbi won't change his principles an iota. Will be interesting to see Brighton amp up their playing out from the back which Potter did compromise on for the sake of pragmatism here and there. Brighton don't have the most ideal centre backs for that style, even though they've done really well with the change in style from Hughton to Potter. Colwill might be more suited to it than Dunk or Webster though.

They should have some money to spend for January though given the sales this summer. And they desperately still need a striker, can't bank on Welbeck staying fit throughout the season.

Incredible. Was he ever correct with anything football related? Guy is beyond clueless.
You couldn't make it up, dude straight up thinks everyone outside the British game doesn't understand "our" football. He even accuses him of spending a couple of hours googling Brighton just to get the job.

But seriously. You'd think even a fecktard like him would get it right from time to time but that guy is wrong pretty much about everything. Like diametrically wrong.

Better than Potter. Remember how we all argued that Brighton just need a striker to finish the chances they create? Well, this guy came in and fixed that almost immediately . Potter is struggling to score with Chelsea now.

May be, they don't need a striker after all. It was just Potter tactics.

Brilliantly run club. Nothing but respect. We can only just dream of how the club is being run.

Its because he only knows things like "putting a shift in" and "foreigners don't work hard enough". The kinda guy who when he was manager of Liverpool banned deoderent so the place would smell more masculine.
Hell of a player mind.

It looks even more ridiculous in hindsight that Juventus could have hired him but opted to stick with Allegri because he "knows how to win things".

His management at Benfica was comedy. Brought a lot of UK players that couldnt play well even if their lifes depended on it, despite having significant wages.
Brian Deane was the only exception: a bit clumsy player but he had a very powerful shot and made a decent career.

He played Michael Thomas every game despite he was the slowest player I've ever saw playing professional football. His justification to the media was that he always played because he had big balls, with these exacta words.
Then all sort of jokes came that Thomas was slow because his balls were heavy, etc etc

Has anybody noticed that they score goals now instead of being wasteful under Potter? The same Potter who can’t coach strikers to score at Chelsea?

Driving a Ferrari means you need to manage a lot more aspects (and expectations) than just coaching aesthetically pleasant patterns at a small club, though.

For both managers and players. We see it time and time and again. Harry Potter being the latest example at Chelsea

On MOTD yesterday Ian Wright talked about how happy he was seeing him doing well after the stick he took when he took over from Potter. Glad for the guy he is doing a brilliant job.

To be fair, Brighton got through the whole "unable to score phase" last season, Potter left Brighton on 11 goals scored this season after 6 games. I know everyone's taking free punches at Potter right now because of Chelseas form, but a lot of the reason why de Zerbi is doing so well right now is down to Potter. It'll be interesting to see how de Zerbi continues with Brighton after this season, they're riding high right now and he's enjoying life. He's done really well to continue Brightons form and it's not easy joining a new club so early on in the season without anyway of bringing in your own players.

Brightons been an enjoyable side to watch for several years now. Good to see that they've managed to put it together this season and be where they deserve.

I know it does, and you are right. Still, I'm pretty sure Juventus wouldn't be any worse with De Zerbi in charge.

Reminds me a lot of Swansea in the early 2010s. Fantastic to watch especially after Brandon Rodgers replaced Roberto Martinez. Let's see if De Zerbi can follow or even surpass that trajectory.

With Agnelli silenced and then ousted, with FIGC administering Serie A like wrestling in order to sell the product to easy going fans abroad, Allegri is the perfect villain manager at the perfect villain club.

De Zerbi is just a toddler and would have been crushed… he is also portayed as a force of Good :D who would never join the baddies to win a tinypot like the now reviled Sarri.

Fair play to him and the Brighton board. They haven’t let the momentum drop despite Potter leaving. Looks like a great appointment. Let’s see if he’s able to put in some consistency across multiple seasons.

Turning into a big fan of him. The way Brighton keep on playing and also his handling of both Trossard and Caicedo scenarios is quite exceptional. Brighton could’ve been floundering in lesser hands.

They always look for the short quick pass instead of the hoof, look awesome.
