Roberto De Zerbi

I honestly can't believe some would have taken him here.
He’s still 2nd in their league. Managers can’t be judged on certain games. If that was the case Guardiola isn’t a good coach for losing to Bournemouth .

Always seemed odd that in a season when so many clubs were looking for a new manager, and he was going for a song, that he ended up at Marseille. I suspect the clubs that spoke to him felt they just couldn't work alongside him.

No idea what's going on with Marseille but scanned through fbref and the data doesn't look particularly good despite the 2nd position in the table. xPts has them on 10th, xG not that much better.

Form has been pretty meh too (L D W L W L)

Will wait for resident Ligue 1 experts to chime in here.

Looked like the new Pep for a brief period at Brighton but he's fallen off big time since. Flash in the pan hipster coach.

No he isn't. He's a good coach with massive flaws. In no world is he "brilliant".
Well as far as I know he's been successful at every club he's been at, improving them. It is a matter of time until a top club picks him up

Define success. He is good, just not good enough. He hasnt won any impressive title and his points per game in Italy and England are decent, but nothing exceptional. If you watch his teams over the course of a season, nothing screams top manager.

Who does better with teams at that level?

We're talking about whether he's a "brilliant" coach. He's not. I personally think he would be a disaster at a top club.

Don't know what's gone sour at Marseille even though they're 2nd in the league - these results happen occasionally when playing as expansive as he likes to, but it seems like the trend is upwards rather than downwards for them.

Think some of the comments regarding him falling off are a bit harsh. He did well two seasons ago with Brighton getting them to 6th, and was rewarded with the club selling a genuinely elite midfield pairing in Caicedo and Mac Allister over the following summer. This together with getting long term injuries to their two most productive wingers I think is a reasonable explanation to having a bit of a drop-off last season. Think he could do very well at a club with players of higher ability, but unsure which team would take the gamble. City after Pep leaves perhaps?

I couldn’t believe United fans on here wanted him as our manager. He’s a detestable little scrote.

"De Zerbi for me" in the summer where everyone assumed Ten Hag was about to get sacked was the most infuriating thing.

Helped show those who didn't know their football. Like those who think Gerrard was better than Scholes.

Exactly, there were so many saying INEOS have no idea what they are doing etc... Di Zerbi was there... what not...

Its always the case right, many of our fans get so excited over a manager / player who has been good for 6 month to a year... really want him, blame the club and its dog for not getting him.

If they did decide to get him, it would be... we are a massive club, should have done due diligence....

Proving how overrated he is at Marseille

How so? I haven't watched them but curious as I see they're 3rd in the league which is an improvement on last season. What are the expectations? Surely not win the league in his first season?

I guess I find it odd how aggressively fans seem to want to hate him and talk as though he is one of the worst managers around. The vast majority of managers will have flop tenures at clubs and then relative success at another and the opinions dramatically sway based on the moment, just look at Emery, no one here would have wanted him after Arsenal stating the league was too tough for him, etc. but now we had some that wanted him here after the job he's done at Villa (in the same big bad premier league). Slightly different tangent but I just find it odd how aggressively definitive people are and how quick those opinions change from trash to great and no in between.

I mean, they comfortably have the second highest wage bill in the league and a pretty good squad. It's not really particularly impressive.

Going to AC Milan it seems by that link so that will be a good test given what a terrible season they've had this year.

He’sa good coach. His actions may be questionable at times but I don’t see what you’re looking at to say those that wanted him “don’t know football”. He was one of our top choices had we replaced ETH that summer, so maybe United don’t know football either. AC Milan mustn’t know football. The true football geniuses are sat on RedCafe.

He’s also took Marseille from 8th (iirc) to third. It’s not even like he’s failing there either.

I don’t think you can use United and the decision making of the club (esp. last summer) as some sort of high barometer.

However, I agree, that anyone that uses the term ‘doesn’t know football’ is infantile and cannot engage in a discussion properly.
