Pep predicted that he would build up his fitness over the latter part of the season and you'd see the best of him at the World Cup. And you've got to say he was proven right.
I think this would be a major ball dropped by Madrid if they let the Rodri transfer slip through, never mind him actually potentially signing for their main trophy rivals in Spain.
He's the one player who at least could try and bring some sort of balance to an attack with Vini Jr, Mbappe and Jude. You do just feel they aren't in love with Rodri for some reasons therefore just won't give him the priority it deserves.
I felt he showed signs of his previous levels but he just looked a bit more cumbersome and therefore susceptible against quick transitioning teams. Though that all went out of the window at the WC. As you said, it’s a slower pace of football and that’s why I wonder if the PL is what is making him look sluggish at times.

I think his priority is to return to Spain. Real Madrid is probably his preferred destination, but it seems that several of his teammates in the national team have been encouraging him to join Barcelona.
As for Madrid, I'm still not convinced their interest is entirely genuine. Maybe after the public pressure following the World Cup, they may have felt compelled to signal their interest, but now it looks like they're starting to backtrack.

I find midfielders get a ridiculously hard time after they hit about 28 or 29 onwards every time they have a bad run of form, Casemiro was declared finished several times and then he was having some of his best games for the club at 34. Rodri wasn't quite as good as his Ballon d'Or level but I don't think he ever looked finished and City always looked better when he was in the team than when he wasn't, even when not fully fit.
Modric was winning Madrid's player of the season at 36, Kroos was their best midfielder at 34. Yes he could be done by then but also he could be world-class for 4-5 more years. Considering Casemiro was sold for £60m then you'd think £60m for Rodri would be fair.

On social media, especially among the club's "officialists" - the ones who always seem to echo the board's line- Rodri is being heavily downplayed.
The only real reason for the resentment is that he beat Vini to the Ballon dor (and maybe the fact that he played for Guardiola). The narrative is always the same: "Madrid are different. They shouldn't become a mecano/robotic like City or Spain."
They've spent weeks repeating the same talking points about his age, his injury, and his contract situation. Like you said, he's exactly what we need. Even Mourinho keeps pushing for him.

To be fair, I didn't realise he was 30. Considering Arsenal are paying £75m for Guimares who is a year and a half younger, £50m probably is the right price. Also considering his injury record last year.

Real Madrid have been a joke this summer. Hiring a washed up manager in Mourinho and signing a washed up player in Bernardo Silva, and potentially losing out on rodri to your rival. They're lucky they still have some great offensive players because that midfield will be mediocre.
