Yeah, I haven't seen much of him outside of the recent Euros. But based on those YouTube clips, I'd agree with you yeah.
We lack certain specific qualities in our team, which are very weird. We lack someone who consistently can put in good crosses high and low, we lack an excellent free kick taker who scores at quite a decent range, we lack players in the field who can consistently offer offensive threat and score from set-pieces. Before Pogba we lacked a player who can deliver good long balls to put the attackers 1 vs 1 with the keeper. Needs adressing.

I quite think Mata and Pogba are rather good at set-pieces

He scores so many different type of goals. But man, The amount of beauties Deulofeu put on the plate for him! Doubt we have anyone with such great delivery out wide.
So Rooney's 250 goals apparentlty work out at 80% with his right foot and 10% each from his left foot and head. Which is apparently fairly standard. Lukaku's stats are 50%, 25%, 25%.

Mata scores maybe two in a season and usually from very close range, he cant take them for further off. Pogba also seems to have a good free kick, yet to score one though. (Two on the post I think).
Zlatan took most last year and was mostly shit at them. Pogba and Mata are excellent free kick takers. we don't lack free kick takers. Rashford also showed he's very good at them and I hear Lukaku ain't bad either.

I wouldnt call them specialists yet to be fair, they should get the chance this year though with Zlatan gone. Scoring one or two in a season doesnt make you a specialist.

I'd say if you score around 5 free kicks a season you're a specialist; like Rooney I think in Van Gaal's debut season, or Yaya Toure in his storm season. Someone like Payet, Messi, Sanchez, Sneijder, van der Vaart, Siggurdson etc. With a decent ratio, so no Ronaldo who scores 1 in the 100 he takes.

I'd imagine success rate should really determine a free kick specialist. Mata at Chelsea should certainly be considered a specialist, I remember him scoring a lot of great free kicks there. He hasn't got the chance to take as many for United. There was an article a few years ago looking at Mata's proficiency at free kicks. It's here if you want to check it

True but it's also a bit logical. He only tskes the free kicks close to the goal, orher players score and try from very different ranges. He is very good for the close range but misses powerd and effect for the long ranges. They try the difficult free kicks more and miss more too. I'd rather a Ronaldo/Beckham than Mata in terms of free kicks in general, as they can score the 40 yrds too.

No thanks. Ronaldo just wasted loads of free kicks that could have been whipped in. They used to drive me crazy. Yes when they occasionally worked they looked amazing but we could have been scoring headers from those same positions, and the success % would likely have been better. Beckham at least was more consistent with his free kicks.

Is it true he's not playing tomorrow? Or are people getting confused with Jose saying Romero wouldn't play?

There's no logic reason as to why he wouldn't be involved tomorrow. So I assume he'll play.

So let Mata take the freekicks near the goal and someone else take them from far away. Or am I missing something?

Reckon Rashford and Pereira will take the free kicks this year.
Rashford will for sure, Mourinho loves the pace he whips the ball in with. I'll be interested to see how many games Pereira plays.

Can't wait to see the improvement of his free kick. I wonder if he improves his corner kick too since last season his corner kicks were awful.

Jose said he bought Lukaku as a target man for the final third. He's not a type of striker who can build up the play. From those statements, it's very obvious that Jose is going to play slightly different in attack. Unlike Lukaku, Zlatan last season offered no pace to run behind defenders and tend to drop deeper to build up the attack because he's good with it. So I won't be worry too much on Lukaku's first touch, Jose knows Lukaku's weakness and strength and he has plan to get the best out of him.

The game was as Mourinho said just a training session. Thought he was ok, should have scored obviously

 Harsh posters still not yet posting?

Give him more gaming time.. horrid performance tbh, but his hold-up play, strength and unselfishness today are applaudable.

I'm a bit worried about his mentality in handling pressure.. seems tense and not that confidence today.

His first touches are not that bad, he even helped build-up our attacks.

Not a great performance but decent. Didn't do that much on the ball but he did a very good job in pulling defenders away which left loads of space for Martial and Mkhi to run into. He should have scored but not much else he technically did wrong. Hoping to see a bit more from him against Salt Lake. No doubt he'll be great for us though.

Red Card for Casemiro!
I'm not a huge Lukaku fan, but though this game gives plenty of criticism material, I'll resist for a few games.

My main concern is not his first touch as much as his lack of link up play in closed spaces. Now I know he has his moments now and then (before someone pops up with a video of some one-touch assists), but it's simply not good enough for our play. The counter-argument usually is 'who cares if he scores 20+ goals every season?' but will he at United? How many times have Everton had to break down a parked bus of a defence? We had Zlatan linking up play beautifully last season, laying it off consistently and accurately to runners around him, and yet we failed to convert most of those. How many of those chances will Lukaku create, assuming the others will finish? He is infamous for not being able to hold up the ball despite being a target man (evidence in case today, too) - how will he manage to do it when he's surrounded by three of the oppo defenders and needs to place the perfect ball to find Mkhi's run into the box?

I don't have high expectations from him this season. He might be a PL proven scorer, but there's a lot of learning and adapting to do. I hope Mkhi, Martial and Pogba step up their numbers to compensate for Zlatan because honestly, I think we're worse off than we were last season without Zlatan.

Good post. Definitely had a forgettable debut, but I genuinely like the lad and hope he does great for us.
