Cantona or Hernandez?

Ronaldo or Park?

Giggs or Valencia?

Evra or Shaw?

Ferdinand or Smalling?
More interesting question: Is Ronaldo really considered a club 'legend'? So is beeing a 'legend' basically just about player quality?

For me Rooney represents United for most of this century so far. That's what makes a legend for me.

Think you're assuming people who answered in favour of Rooney didn't also take that into account. Even with his shortcomings Rooney is still the bigger legend. He was our talisman for a decade. When Ronaldo left he carried the team. He's the only player who had a mob show up at his door to threaten him to re-sign a contract with us.
For how long? and achieving what? He had two seasons as the main man for us and all we won was one EFL cup. He gave up the team with ease to RVP and Ibra.

In a previous post, I stated that Rooney was on course to being our biggest legend in 2010 but his actions in 2011, 2013 and his underwhelming final seasons took a big hit to his legacy. Ole was the first one in out of the batch of strikers in 99 and despite watching all each of them have starring roles in the following league wins he outlasted them all and had his great campaign in 2001/02. Sir Alex even kicked Becks out of the starting 11 for him and Ole was excellent on the right. He was always loved but his legend status grew even bigger when he was out injured for two years but still came back banging in the goals for us in 2006/07. There was a real underdog story with him and was one of the reason the fans loved him and he reciprocated that love. Not to mention he provided the greatest moment in the clubs history.

2:08 his first goal after years out and you see how the fans, players and coaches feel about him. He was adored.

Better player was easily Rooney, and he did more for the club. Ole would have had a fairer shot at that if he hadn't been so injured towards the end. His return to help us in the 06-07 season was a wonderful ending to a great career.

In terms of legend status? Ole, definitely. His role in the Treble season was brilliant, and the Liverpool FA Cup match and the final in Münich alone will help give him an edge to anybody who witnessed that season play out. He gets the club deeply, and his dedication to helping us any way he could, when Fergie benched him as he would be more professional about it than other strikers, also earns him points. He also spoke out as the only active player when we were being sold to the Glazers, and was told to shut it, and then carried on.

Really hoping for his managerial record to make him an even greater figure in the United pantheon, but his playing career alone just was indicative of a mutual love story, more than Rooney's was. Same goes for Ronaldo, for me. Possibly coloured by me being Norwegian :P though I'm not the biggest patriot and am suspicious of those tendencies.

Before he was manager 80% of the forum didn't remember him too often. Him being a manager increased his legacy
70% weren't even born when he played, seeing at some posts in various threads.

Right now you got to give it to Wayne Rooney if you compare those two.

Stuff of legend, right there.
Come on, contextualise the post with the response. The person said Rooney wasn't endeared or revered to/by United fans, hence the response that he was both on and off the pitch, with that instance being one of a number of examples of his star power

How are you going to downplay Rooney's legend for playing a role that was still more impactful than Ole's? When Ronaldo and RVP were the top scorers the most underrated trait of Rooney's was actually sacrificing his ego and letting those two be the main points of attack. Even Rooney in his supporting role was still more impactful than Ole. Rooney being a cock also didn't diminish his legend enough to fall below the other tier of greats like Ole in the eyes of United fans. Heck most have Ronaldo over Ole and he didn't just ask for a transfer, he left the club

Really everyone know his injury was the reason our season in 2010 went down hill. Thanks to his injury and us playing him despite being not fully fit against Bayern thus losing him for the end of the season led to us losing the league and getting knocked out of CL.
