We’re basically going to have a repeat situation this summer to last summer where we could end up making a decision on the coach based on a one off cup final rather than the appalling league campaign, I’m not going to negatively go in on today as we were always going to play a heavily rotated side.

Forgetting today based on Europa though shows still that Amorim has simply been a disaster as he’s not improved what he has, refuses to change things up tactically and will potentially head into next season if we were to lose the Europa final with zero confidence throughout the squad and a very serious problem with their mentality due to losing so many games.

This isn't the game to have doubt. We played a weakened side today
 
If he doesn't win the Europa he is going to be under immediate pressure at the start of next season. Now maybe this season has lowered expectations so much that even hanging around 7-9th will be seen as acceptable but there is no hiding from the fact that his league results have been embarrassingly poor.

We didnt overperform last season, we underperformed due to all the injuries we had by finishing 8th after finishing 3rd the season before

I remember as a kid 'Souness Must Stay' T Shirts selling merrily outside OT in the run into the first Premier League win & Pool supporters saying 'Souey needs more time, hes got a vision, he needs to bring in his own players, hes doing well in the cups ' when in actual fact he was shite, clueless & pulled the wool over their eyes & it took them a LONG time to recover. That's were we are with Amorim. Hes shite but we are making excuses for him

Come to think of it.... with his black curly hair & tache, could Amorim be Souness's son sent here to destroy us? Souness managed in Portugal didn't he?

Imagine being a United fan thinking we will reach top 5 next season with Dalot and Dorgu at WB.

He's blooded in a few bodies and we have played a he'll of a lot better in more games than we did under eth but just haven't squeezed out the results.

I am worried he thinks that was a good performance by Mount (goal aside which was a smart finish).

He hasn't yet had a chance to actually build his squad with the players he needs. If you add a proper striker, + Cunha and one or two other players, we could be looking at a completely different situation next year.

If Forest, Fulham, Palace, Wolves, Everton or Brentford have better squads than we do, I should just watch another sport.
Amorim is massively underachieving in the league.

OK, so I guess according to you absolutely all of our defeats under Amorim have been 100% deserved and never once has he been unfortunate?

Just look at the Lyon tie. You're mentioning the red card but before that we'd had Garnacho miss an absolute sitter to put the tie beyond doubt, and Onana throwing away two goals in the first leg as well.

Talking about how lucky Amorim has been is frankly absolutely risible. In recent months, he's had far, far more matches where he's been unlucky than lucky.

We have certain 'fans' who cannot enjoy a win unless the opponents don't have a single shot at goal... because imagine if that shot had gone in.... oh no, then we'd only have won 2-1 and maybe they might've used the momentum of that goal they didn't score to score another

Maybe Amorim having a poor record at the start is good omen?

We've had managers who've come in started great and declined after 2-3 seasons, so even if we had got a manager in and got us playing well in the pl and got us 8th, it would mean nothing for the future let's be honest

Let's see next season with what players we get in the summer, it could fall apart or we could actually get places

I'm not really in or out, whatever happens happens, but I think people still hanging their hat on "just change the manager one more time and we'll be good again" will probably end up disappointed (again). We have been atrociously run for over a decade, our playing squad is a hodgepodge that doesn't particularly suit the style of play that any of the "modern" managers we always tend to want will try to implement, our new co-owners have made a pretty unimpressive start in rearranging the football department and we are, seemingly, scraping the barrel for money when we still need significant investment in the squad even to go back to being top-4 challengers. Whatever happens with Amorim, there's an absolutely feck-ton of stuff that needs to be sorted and I'm not optimistic much of it will be.

He was one of our better players today, and I think Amorim's comments were made in context that Mount has missed a lot of football over the past year and is finally back and regaining form. The goal obviously helped that perception as well as his confidence. Suspect he will be an important player midweek as well.

And eth was dragged to that position by spending a fortune and having Rashford play a blinder to finish 3rd. He spent another 200 million and we finished 8th. Most of our crap players are because of eth tenure.

Take a look at the stats for last year compared to the other premier league sides. We were lucky to finish 8th.

It's been the same all season. Are you suggesting these players haven't been training together for months? He's not improved us in controlling games.
 
On the bright side, how the ownership deal with the managerial situation if we win the EL will be a good test to see if they have learnt anything.

How many of them changed systems mid season and how many of the managers have had at least one summer window to put a team together?

Thought about this while watching the game. It’s the same “cup saves awful season” scenario.

The differences (which I think are significant) are that he hasn’t spent as much and obviously hasn’t had anywhere close to enough time.

However, it really is de ja vu.

I agree with you completely. Our club is horribly run.

However this perspective, and Amorim not being not good enough, are not mutually exclusively, and can co-exist.

Athletic are 4th in La Liga and have players capable of turning this around. We have lost 3 nil at home to worse competition, so no the SF is not over.

It was an enjoyable win against Athletic but we are shite. The manager who went on lecturing the media and squad about establishing standards is getting his pants pulled down in the league every week. There is nothing good about this season even if we manage to win Europa, it has been absolutely dreadful.

Thought we controlled most of the second half today.

Inexperienced defenders and making 8 changes to the starting line up may just have been the issue today in terms of the result.

I don't think there's anything about his results this season that would have made me want him out, no, is the short answer.

Some extreme scenarios that I consider so unlikely it's not worth discussing but as I say, short answer...no

Wait, I thought the new footballing structure was going to handle recruitment from now on. Why are we talking about Amorim building "his" squad with "his" players now?

As I said we underperformed last season because our squad was wrecked by injuries, without all those injuries we probably wouldnt have finished as low as 8th.

Yeah, after last summer you could see them not wanting to risk making the exact same mistake again. If Amorim continues to be such an unmitigated disaster and is sacked in October, having spent the summer budget on specialized signings, the club leadership will look like absolute idiots.

They will obviously not impose random players on Amorim that he doesn't want. Its a team effort that will probably be focused on how to improve the squad around Amorim's formation and playing style.

Did you watch us? We played exactly the same as we did when he finally got sacked.

He got 50 million for a goalkeeper that threw us out of the champions league and we had a full strength squad for most of that competition. Amorim got 25 million for dorgu and that only happened when we shipped malacia, rashford and anthony out on loan.

I expect him to have a say, sure, but signing players tailor-made for a specific manager's style of play has long been a recipe for disaster for us.
 
So our only two wins in the league since January is Ipswich and Leicester?

Irrespective of how poorly the club has been run, Amorim has shown that he cannot cope with the standards in England. 6 wins in the league, 15th place and now confirmation that we won’t even reach 50 points. This is unacceptable for clubs like west ham and Brighton let alone United.

If the club wants to show that it’s turned a corner then buy players who are versatile and can suit any system. The last thing we need is £200 million spent on players only suited for Amorim.

Berada obviously knew that Amorim played a specific style and formation before he signed him, so it wouldn't make much sense for the club to change Amorim. The likelier scenario is they will support him by buying a list of players he has identified for various positions in need.
