Yes. And it matches the eye test of the unbiased viewer. We were good against Arsenal. Should have beaten Fulham but finishing let us down and it's meaningful that we went away to a strong midtable team and were much much the better team over the full 90. And dominated Burnley despite the scoreline flattering them. Should have 7 points and be about plus 4 on the goal difference.

These metrics don't change the scores of games and we won't get any points for them but they add context to what we see on the pitch and they tend to predict what we will see moving forward. If this form continues we will win a lot of matches.
That's a positive then. That should silence the naysayers for a while.

Must depend on the model. On Understat (easiest one to filter by dates) we were still only 6th after five games.

But the apples-to-apples comparison is surely three games, and that's very different.

Maybe, either way we were near the top 5 games into last season. So these early stats don't mean much. The main thing is we don't look any different to last season bar a couple players in Mbuemo and Cunha being better than the players they are replacing. Even the Arsenal match wasn't too dissimilar to how we played against other top 4 teams under Amorim last season, including Arsenal. Ditto the Fulham and Grimsby games. Just more of the same tactical flaws.

Not seen anything of Jashair, but isn't Stiller a very different profile to Baleba?
Yeah he's a very different profile, hoping that we could pair them up next summer. Well unless someone else emerges in that Baleba profile of CM which is a real possibility.

While the results have been poor even lately, the underlying stats show improvement, especially on offense. But I can't help but look at our squad and think that it still functions better as a 4-3-3 rather then 3-4-3 due to our midfield. A middle two of Bruno and Casemiro doesnt work. But a midfield 3 of Bruno, Mainoo, and Ugarte/Casemiro isnt terrible.

Lammens hasn't played a minute yet and you are already saying that Martinez would have been the better decision.

For all you know, he may have exactly the technical ability and mental fortitude we need. Or have you been deep into the tape on him from watching hours of the Belgium Pro League?

You are also negating the price. Martinez would have wanted a good chunk of change. He is apparently on £150k a week at Villa. Onana is on more. Let say we cant shift Onana or Bayendir, that would be £400k a week on keepers at United, in a possition where only one plays at a time.

That is the kind of mess Barca have got themselves into with Garcia, Szczesny, ter Stegen and Pena.

Just a thought, why not let it play out and see?
Why not jump into a canyon and see if you can fly? Not everything in life is "what if". That is what gambling is called indeed

I have not watched a minute of Lammens play! Neither have most people - because that is the point - he is nobody. He may become somebody but we are not a training ground, we are one of the largest clubs in the world. We shouldnt be gambling on a keeper

I shouldnt have to explain why buying a young, inexperienced goalkeeper from Belgium and asking him to overnight become starting keeper for United is a huge gamble

You'd never buy anyone until they've proved themselves in the league and pay massive fees then, which is obviously silly. It's literally what scouts and analysts are paid for, it's then up to the coaches to see what he's like in training.

As said in another thread, if we can't unearth gems from leagues without having to pay extortionate sums, we may as well just pack in the whole scouting operation and buy whoever plays well in the prem.

This is just not an accurate assessment of the Fulham game at all.

Fulham had 52% possession and xG was even-ish with Fulham slightly ahead, Fulham 13 shots to our 10. And our xG is inflated by one of their players randomly deciding to judo throw our player for no reason at all and gift us a penalty, not a goalscoring chance we actually created ourselves.

If you polled most football fans after that game I'd bet most would say Fulham edged it with maybe a draw being fair.

In my opinion. RA not being able to watch the penalties is not such a bad thing. In fact, he’s acting like some “real” fans. Being human and all. We can’t expect everyone to be the same. Not many are like SAF or Pep/Klopp. Mental states of people are so different but it doesn’t make them any lesser human being. I say we support our manager (even after (if) they are sacked). But who am I really to say this.

I would gladly light the fuse once you're inside!

It is not a gamble, it is an educated guess as the scouts will have done their homework on him. Obviously, the guy has talent as a lot of big clubs were tracking him.

We don't even know if that is the plan. How do you know he wont sit for a while?

Sure, we want a keeper now, but other positions have been prioritized, so we have actually done well to get Lammens in. It may be a good thing that we have three keepers fighting it out for a spot, if one is not sold.

Martinez was never going to happen for 30mil and high wages and I think i read that the payment terms on Lammens were very helpful to us. As a said prior, we cant dedicate 400k+ a week on the GK possition, which is what it would have been with Onana, Martinez, Bayendir and Heaton.

No, it was a terrible look. Wasn't just that he wasn't looking. He was quivering in the dugout, rocking back and forth like a nervous wreck.

He needs to man the f**k up, seriously, if he wants to stay as Man United manager.

Criticize the loss or lack of results last year, but this is a strange thing to choose among all the others.

When you are shit, which we are, and need quick fixes, which we do, yea we need proven solutions, especially for key positions like goalkeeper.

We can gamble for the likes of Diego Leon, because we dont have to start him in any game any time soon

That is the difference between recruiting from lesser leagues as investment and gambling on your goalkeeper that loses you seasons

Will you be the last one to criticize him when he is over his head and loses us games because he is too young and inexperienced? Something tells me you will stand in the front line with stones ready to go

We don't even know if that is the plan. How do you know he wont sit for a while?
I hope he does sit for a while but then we are playing games with Onana or Bayindir, which will see us lose games and maybe even Amorim get sacked. Not what I wish on United

I’ve been following United since the turn of millennium and for the first time, I’ve had enough with managerial changes and I am willing to give as much time as it takes to cook.

I am knackered with the constant changes that are required after every manager sacking and then the same merry go round.

I see lots of positivity with our attack and it’s the just a matter of time when everything clicks and we start scoring with ease.

This season doesn’t feel anything like the last, at least to me.

Did you read and get triggered by that journo who spent the whole match watching and taking notes on Amorim's body language?

My gosh some of you are strange and silly

He’s an absolute mile off in my opinion, his tactics are so rigid, thing is I believe if we had another manager in Oliver Glasner for instance, same ish formation but completely drilled in what to do and adaptable. I’ve backed him 100 percent, but when he was messing with that tactics board at Grimsby it had a stench only beholder to Steve McClarens umberella to it. I admit I thought he was it, he’s not. Will only get worse with him in charge and I’ve watched every second of every game, we’re useless! Same stuff different players

Didn’t Slot have the tactics board out the other day? And other managers.

Such a weird criticism, they all seem to use it.

Not against Grimsby Town, I think is the point. The belief is he shouldn’t have needed magnets to know how to put Grimsby to the sword. Coupled with his body language it painted a picture of someone in over his head.

Sorry but your issue with Amorim is that he will get a tune out of a team but he demands really good players in all positions?
He doesn't demand it. He needs it because he's so tactically backwards.

11 top players is the solution?! The man's a genius

It does, but it's slightly inflated by two penalties

The shots on target is only very minimally affected, considering one of those penalties didn’t even hit the target!

Anyway, click on the image. There’s a load of other stats that penalties have no relevance to. The touches in the opposition box stat is arguably the most encouraging. Small data set but we’re also one of only six teams who’s played one of last season’s top two in our first three fixtures.

That’s silly though, and if he did the opposite he’d be criticised for relying on ‘vibes’. Not to mention that we scored twice after the boards came out.

It's terrible man, let's not sugarcoat it. He's not supposed to act like a fan.
It's also not reserved for penalties, at times he doesn't even watch corner kicks. There's no positive spin to this

The underlying stats mean zero when the most important stat is still losing 4 out of 5.

Stats have a place but the only one that really matters is wins.

You’ve attempted excusing something that looked patently ridiculous at the time (hence the meme farm).
Yes because there’s literally nothing ridiculous about using a tactics board. It’s literally just a tool to show a visual representation to a player what you want them to do, etc.
