Ruben Amorim | 2025-26

Being happy with this performance shows how low our standards have sunk. it’s nice we won against sunderland, i say it’s nice because these games are no longer guaranteed 3 points, these times are long gone. But i would not jump on the bandwagon of “we’re back” - yet. We won, but we had lots of issues:

- almost nothing from the left. Dalot over there was very bad.
- very, very, very slow building up an attack. We only seemed to have some urgency when amad had the ball. Otherwise, the ball takes forever to move forward.
- our midfield is still not OK. I was worried Xhaka would boss the midfield like Henderson did last week. Luckily he didn’t. But again, our midfield isn’t able to set the right tempo in the middle of the park.

Ruben needs to figure all of this out before liverpool. Their game against chelsea today is very high tempo. Not sure we can keep up with this.

Lammens seems like a breath of fresh air. Hope he solves one of amorim’s many problems.

The left is a concern. Dalot was terrible and Dorgu doesn't offer much more, if anything. That's not something that will be resolved this year since the only other options there are Malacia and Leon.

And I'm not criticizing Dalot the left sided WB, I'm criticizing Dalot the overall football player.

The game against Liverpool is always big for us but for Amorim it could really swing the pendulum in his favour with a win. Even a draw would lift morale even further but he needs to come out of that game with at least a draw. And if we can manage that, it will give the team confidence going forward.

I think we could really do with Lisandro Martinez to return quickly. His ability on the ball makes our attack even more potent. He was the difference maker in the game at Anfield last season and I'm not sure he'll be available or match fit to play this time around at Anfield. Which is a pity.

“Even more potent”

Brilliant.

Yeah we’re spoilt

We should be at full strength after the break once Licha returns. A good time as any to pick up points.

This win doesn't change my view of him long term, I still think he needs to be replaced, but it bought him some time. It's up to him now to build on this and get some good results.

Who is saying "we're back"? Or even anything remotely close? Nobody thinks "we're back after a win against Sunderland". Just not everybody is so miserable and hates the club/manager so much that they can't enjoy 3 points and a comfortable win.

You've just created a complete strawman and then attacked it.

Being happy at watching a solid performance doesn't say anything about our standards or expectations. Yet another strawman. The alternative is just be negative regardless of the result and if that's your attitude then sucks to be you. What a boring, negative mindset to have.

Carry on writing paragraphs of negative things after every match, regardless of the result. Bizarre way to engage with a hobby.

We won't "be back" until we've put in a season or more of consistency at the very least. Probably two. In the meantime, nothing wrong with being happy to have watched a solid win.

I read a post on social media criticising amorim over dalot. The post said: “amorim doesn’t use dalot in the right position. Dalot’s best position is outside the stadium”.

Yes, the left is a huge concern. But i would not underestimate the midfield issue. I will not talk about switching to 433 or 4231. I wrote that a lot here, we all wrote, pundits spoke. It’s the manager’s decision, him and only him, and 3421 is the only thing he knows (by his own words).

Having players deeper who can evade the press and break lines at a high level will make your attacking abilities more potent. It's not my fault they decided to neglect the attack by not signing high quality midfielders to service and facilitate a forward line that struggled for service.

After our next PL game we will have played Arsenal, City, Chelsea and Liverpool all before November. That's not an easy start in fairness. If we're still within punching distance of the top four places then there is no reason we can't kick on.
I don't have confidence we will but there will be no excuses after Anfield.

Funnily we're literally only that Arsenal result off being level with them on points.

We're not in the worst spot, considering we've played 3 of the best 4/5 teams in the league already.

We are in an unusual place as a team. You can see some good stuff is happening. If we'd had a regular keeper or Bruno scores his pens we'd be in a very decent league position.

But we just can't get anything going consistently. Just that bit of momentum that could get some confidence into the team. You think it's coming and then some random series of happenings puts a stop to it.

I'm convinced the goalkeeper position is the biggest factor in all this.

I started reading your post and was planning to reply. But then i read more… i will not engage in a discussion with you.

Criticise the post not the poster. You went a bit too far. I am reporting this.

A win at Anfield will pile on the pressure on Liverpool and their head coach. They've lost their last two games on the bounce (or is it 3 on the bounce?) and losing three on the bounce with the amount of money they've spent will create all sorts of pressure and uncertainty.

For Amorim it will give him more time, and eventhough I feel it looks difficult for him to survive in the short-term, I do believe he could thrive under a better midfield in the mid to long-term with the same formation.

Assuming it ends up working out with amorim perhaps we'd end up making a play for Mendes.

Perhaps the allure of playing for his former manger be enough to pry him away from Paris.

Somewhat off topic but it seem overly unfair for them to basically have the best left back and right back in the world concurrently.

I enjoyed getting 3 points. But what I dont enjoy is watching the team just being out done by the opposition managers tactical change. In the second half the Sunderland manager clearly changed things up. It was working positively but it wasn't enough.

Amorim being so set on this system doesn't want to change anything to keep the momentum up. He wants to die on that hill.

Also, I'm not wanting to be a naggy that, but for Godsake, can Bruno stop calling for the ball 2 yards from the player just to pass it right back to play who is now under pressure. It's like the ball has to go through him somewhat before we make any attacking moves. It's slowing our attacks down!!

Agreed. I think we go all in on Mendes and two CMs next summer. The Portuguese connection will probably do the trick and the player is on a reasonable wage. Mendes, Wharton, and Anderson would be great summer and all three would be achievable for about 200m.

Yeah, not expecting anything out of the Pool game given they will be up for it - not just because its United, but also because Slot will have a lot on the line to end the 3 game skid. If it goes to four, against United no less, he will start to come under pressure which could destabilize their season. If we get anything comparably similar to last year's draw out of this, then I'll be pleased. The real opportunity to pick up points will be the easier schedule from after the Pool game all the way through the 2nd week of Jan.

It’s still an archaic yo-yo football. Hoof it to a big man, and hopefully the ball spilled to one of the other attackers.

If Sunderland had a better attacker, the game would end up a draw, at least.

Liverpool has always been something of a turning point for managers.

Moyes, Ole and Ten Hag never really recovered from heavy defeats against them. Mourinho was sacked the following day after a defeat in 2018.

Ten Hag got a massive boost from beating them in his first season.

Fergie won there in early 93 and that was a massive positive step after not winning there for a few years.

Great win for the system today. It took 4+ years for Areteta to unlock this system. Ruben did it in less than a year.

Longballs!!!!

Today was the type of performance we expect but we need more consistently.
It’s so odd we can’t produce these more often because it shows we have the quality players to do it.
Dare I say, after a performance like this, we are as decent midfielder away from being very, very good.
Fair play for Amorim because I think the starting 11 was pretty much best he had and they performed well for him in the first half.
We can’t judge on one performance though because this is a one off if we are being honest. The Liverpool result is so mouth more important as both a marker for improvement and the fight in this side.
It was a newly promoted team and we were at home. Beating a newly promoted team and we are one midfielder from competing under Amorim is outrageous. Have the standards actually dropped this low? A win here does not change my opinion on Amorim. He is completely and utterly out of his depth.

I'm hoping we can get at least a draw from the game. But the way Liverpool have been playing this season, they have not been convincing in any game they've played.

It's a potential big game for both teams to shift momentum. And a win for United will be massive.

Yep. You're bang on here. This game will make or break him. They're not very good at the moment either, despite their jammy wins earlier in the season.

Once Martinez is back I honestly reckon I'd give Shaw a go there and see how he does. Nothing wrong with at least trying it.

Anyway, I've seen enough from us to know not to get too excited over one win and we are at Anfield next after all, but today was a bit more positive than many of our wins over the past couple of years.

If we can get something from the next game great, but those games aren't our problem anyway. The key is how we do in the games afterwards.

Good point about Shaw. If Licha returns in the next month, that could at least partially resolve the LWB problem.

The strangest thing is why don’t they do it from the start, there is no surprise in Amorim’s way of playing. I don’t think it’s the other manager, it’s our players that drop off for some strange reason.

Hell, make it a 40 year contract with no escape clause. £500 million compensation if they sack him. That will show some loyalty to the coach and show these players who’s boss…
And the players will be forced to get Amorim’s initials branded right above their hooha, plus sign a contract promising lifelong servitude. Make it like NXIVM with goals.

If he gets his first back to back Premier league wins by beating Liverpool in Anfield some on here might suddenly start warming to Ruben Amorim again?
It would definitely be a start. He needs momentum, he hasn't had it in his entire time here, so hopefully if he gets that ridiculous statistic about not winning two successive games out of the way then we can see how it goes. Next four fixtures are:

Liverpool (A)
Brighton (H)
Forest (A)
Spurs (A)

Away form needs to drastically improve. If he can get seven points out of those games then maybe he can survive a bit longer, and who knows, he might get a midfielder in January.

A win and a clean sheet. Perfect result before heading off for the international break.

Can we finally get our two PL wins on the bounce against Liverpool? They are looking out of sorts at the moment. Fingers crossed.

Atleast we kinda started winning our home games now. That's 3 home wins on the trot for the first time in like 2 years.

Direct, route one football is slowly coming back, so I'd suggest getting used to it! haha!

Today isn't the day to whine. We comfortably beat Sunderland and the first half was excellent. Kept a clean sheet, Sunderland barely troubled us. Several of our players looked decent and played well.

Also our Old Trafford form is returning so I'm happy about that.

It's a big if, but if we were able to beat Liverpool we'd only be 2 points behind them. That'd be pretty funny.
I think we can get a draw there. They’ve not impressed at all this season so far. No doubt they will turn it on against us, but I’m cautiously optimistic.
