Ruben Amorim - AC Milan head coach (not manager, or perhaps manager) | living rent free in your heads

Where does this general aversion with 3 at the back come from? To me, it doesn't really matter, plenty of shit managers have deployed 4-4-2 and it doesn't get the flack 3 at the back gets. I'm sure I'm lacking some context
Every team has the players to play 4 at the back. Not every team has the players to play 3/5 at the back as the roles are a lot more specialist.

If you don't have the players for it, you just don't play it except in one-off games for tactical reasons.

Compare his tenure with the treatment Graham Potter got from Chelsea & West Ham fans, after making their teams significantly worse, and you'll realise that it was genuinely nothing more than pretty privilege. If Amorim looked and sounded like Potter then he wouldn't have amassed the same cult following, nor would the mods be dishing out infractions for valid criticisms of the manager after we lost to Arsenal.

I didn’t rate Amorim at all as a manager but the mods would give out infractions to posts that were stupid or unfair in their criticism. Even if you don’t like someone as a manager, if they represent your club they deserve to be treated with respect - something some supporters don’t understand.

He deserved no respect because he chose to put his ego in front of the team.

I don't want to cover old ground, as I've brought this up before, and I appreciate that the mods do a good job of keeping this forum from looking far from the cesspits I've seen on other football forums, but take a look at this infraction, and a few other infractions around it for fair criticism of the manager, and you'll see what I mean about the protection Amorim got after that defeat to Arsenal: https://www.redcafe.net/threads/ruben-amorim-2025-26.488705/page-68#post-33525791

The problem was that he represented himself and not the club.

Is he the only manager we've had who didn't thank the fans after he got sacked? Can't remember if LVG did or not, or Jose.

Ahahahah that is actually pretty harsh. Fair enough the mod who gave that to you is a joke and I hate them.

Really REALLY disagree with you here, Amorim never once put the club and fans before his own ego. Even the likes of ETH had enough respect for his fans to adapt in a cup final and give something back after a shit season.
Amorim was so concerned about his own ego that he wouldn’t even tweak his tactics when 1-0 down in an outrageously important cup final that is still having huge financial repercussions today. (Spurs being able to outspend us for example).
For Amorim it was always ME > club/fans and that deserved absolutely zero respect.

Honestly, that both is your subjective take about another persons intentions and goes directly against what that person himself expressed. That in itself is not a respectful way to treat someone else. And unfortunately, it is the blanket excuse of anyone who want to take out their personal guff on any player, staff or anything who works on the club for whatever reason, and make themselves god of who is for United and who doesn’t belong. I think @Wumminator made a good point in this: that people who represent the club - the same people who makes it possible for us to sit in a sofa and cheer as if we’d scored a belter in stoppage time vs Arsenal even if it was really some other person who did it - deserve a measure of respect and benefit of good faith from us as part of that same process.

I just think he (wrongly) thought that was what was best for the club. I think he was arrogant and wrong but he carried himself well (ish) here and some posters always take it too far.

Absolutely no chance he thought playing Mason Mount at wingback was best for the club; nor that having 5 defenders and 2 DM was ”best for the club” vs 10 man Everton.
He clearly thought, ”it MY way or the highway” and even when 4 at the back was working vs. Newcastle he attempted to sabotage it. He was that concerned about being ”wrong”.
And don’t get me started on his idiotic comments about Rashford that completely fecked any resale value on him.
He didn’t carry himself well at all.

I am not saying all the vitriol was warranted. But if you read my single sentence I am saying that he was lacking in representing the club and when Fletcher/Carrick took over it was night and day.

Now, after he has already engineered his own sacking it is fair game to criticise at will, in my view. It’s a subjective take on which you can have your subjective take.

The fact that there are people in here still defending him is nothing short of baffling.

I don’t disagree with respectful critique, so I don’t think that’s relevant to the post you answered. I made a point about keeping treating people working for and representing the club with a degree of respect. Your one sentence seemed to imply that it’s up to you to decide who really represents the club or not, on whatever grounds you feel like. That way, you make yourself a representative of the club, by deciding ‘who really represents the club’. You can easily chose to say, I don’t care if Amorim worked for United, he didn’t represent United, cause he wasn’t like Carrick, or Rashford doesn’t represent United because I decide he is an asshole and not like Georgie Best, and I can treat them disrespectfully all I want because I decide who represents the club and who doesn’t.

I just don’t think that’s neither fair nor logical.

You’re probably right. I can’t pretend to be such a respectful person and I found Amorim to invite enormous amounts of criticism. Sometimes it went overboard and sometimes it didn’t. It’s a thin line at times.

When you think that our genius management was fully content to let him demolish us further , had he not openly sacked himself.

There must be something about him that fool executives. To be fair most of them dont know much about technical side of football so when ruben presented his 3 at the back system they must be in awe. Hes trying to implement the bloody thing in Milan as well! No adapation whatsoever.

Amorim would make a Wingback out of an 18 Year Old Leo Messi.

That man can make a wingback out of any situation. It’s fascinating.

That is a bit mad in fairness.
Hopefully we won't need to be negative in too many matchday threads this year, come on Carrick!

Hope we smash is ac Milan team. And Mainoo scored a couple

It certainly is difficult for anyone of us I imagine, at least for me it is. During a game I get images of players plotting own goals to hurt me specifically racing through my mind. Football fandom is vicarious madness, and I love it. But I also remind myself of the people writing love letters to Elvis Presley and finding him an asshole for not answering.

Seen it happen elsewhere. I'm a huge Tolkien nerd, and when Amazon announced that they were making a big-budget series about the creation of the rings from LotR, I was ecstatic. Then they picked two showrunners who had apparently convinced them by speaking the elven language during the pitch meeting or something like that, and generally promising all kinds of stuff. These two idiots had essentially no credentials, having barely worked in the industry at all, just some vague writing credits on no-name productions at J.J. Abrams' studio. Big red flag, but I figured Amazon must know what they're doing if they're picking them for the most expensive TV series ever created.

Then the show came out and it was absolute dogshit. Turns out these two charlatans were not in fact diamonds in the rough, but were very much the bumbling industry rookies that the fandom had feared. As time went on, it gradually came out that they had basically conned the studio into giving them the job by talking big game and passing themselves off as passionate Tolkien scholars or some shit. While there are differences between TV and football, there are also similarities, and it seems clear by now that Amorim used fancy talk and a smidgen of success in Portugal to land himself a job that he was not even remotely qualified for, and then his lack of actual competency caused the train wreck, together with his hubris and self-evident personal flaws that led him to refuse to ever change anything despite the fact that none of what he did came even slightly close to working.

The average person is stupid and easily manipulated when personally invested in something. Loads of United fans bought into his snake oil pitch, and seemingly people in executive positions are just as susceptible to it.

Although the really worrying thing about it all was how long so many were content to stick with him, even after the charade was up and it had become obvious he was a dud. It's quite amazing how utterly shit he was whilst retaining support from supposedly one of the biggest clubs in the world. A truly ludicrous situation to witness

The sequel to No Way Home Win.
;) very good this one.

On topic: I also fail to understand why some Utd fans protect his tenure here.
It was abysmal. And if he goes on to replicate his success with Sporting Lisbon at another club,

It won't make his time at Utd any less shit.

Didn't think it would take an Amorim thread to obliterate any lingering curiosity I have about the Rings Of Power on my never ending watch list.

His tenure seemed to put people in two camps, whereas I was quite firmly on the fence. Had reservations but keen not to keep churning through managers.

In hindsight, the naysayers were absolutely right. Egotistical chancer and snake oil salesman. His lack of a thank you to the match going fans after he left was an absolute disgrace. Hope he fails now.

A good sign of how good (or bad) a coach is, is how well they perform after leaving United.

Ten Hag proved he was rubbish. Not looking good for Ruben either.
