Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach | Locked during matches

Seeing posts like these has firmly made me believe that he could have relegated us with an 18th place finish and some of these fans would still laud him for not finishing dead last and how finishing even 18th with this squad is a miracle. Yes we are in an EL final and I am absolutely elated, but let us call it as it is - an awful season managed in the majority by a manager who has not shown anything to assume he can cut it in the PL.

I don't disagree that he has not done a good job in the PL. But I m taking into consideration various factors. It is a hard job, with an unbalanced team, without any physicality and with the need to rely on young players. We had similar issues during Ragnick but people blamed the then manager instead of us addressing the issues. 3 years later and we still have these issues. So, even though things need to improve, I don't want to put the majoriy of blame yet on Amorim.

The first 20 minutes of the second half we were even worse than in first half. The subs and Bruno going deeper changed the game.
It wasn't great but I felt like we were making less mistakes then yeah the subs gave us a much needed spark. Could sense the game had changed as soon as Amad touched the ball and spun their full back. What a player.

Will be interesting to see what team he goes with in the final. I wonder where de Ligt and Heaven will be in terms of fitness by then.

We were 13th when when he came, I think the prem got demoted much sooner than we realised. Most likely in mid Jan when top 4 became very unlikely.

So credit to Ruben if we win the Europa and get CL football. Next year we will be in the same place as Arsenal, but with a trophy.

I believe with time and the right players Amorim will restore us. It’s not Amorim that I don’t believe in it’s those above him.

1. Lining up with Cas and Ugarte combined with nerves made us terrible in playing out the ball. It‘s a conundrum for the final, because I want us to be defensively sound, Cas is a big game player but we shouldn‘t turn over the ball a lot either.

Personally, I‘d go with Bruno and Ugarte in midfield and play De Ligt/Yoro/Maguire in the back line for height. If De Ligt is available.

Most important is to not start the final poor, so Amorim has work to do.

2. We often play 6 at the back, not 5 when defending in a low block. Not a problem: we defend in numbers and attack in numbers. Getting back in defensive positions quickly has been better.

3. Mount is back. For the first time probably, he looks like the player we thought we were getting.

A big positive is that the dressing room seems a lot tighter and a lot happier, despite the results. Players look genuinely pleased for each other, subs celebrate as much as starters, Casemiro hugging Amorim etc.

Andy Mitten also mentioned that Dalot, De Ligt and Zirkzee have been at just about every game despite being injured. Zirkzee in particular, with a season ending injury, isn't obligated to even be in Manchester - but he chose to stay with the team. Lisandro came to both the Lyon home game and last night's.

We still want to win everything. It doesn't always pan out as expected. And as fallow periods go we're doing ok, we are still in the conversation for trophies. We've won as much in the last few years as we did in the whole of the 80s, and that was the team I fell in love with first.
Wanting to win everything is absolutely where level headed fans are, though tempered with the realism that probability doesn’t work in your favour.

‘Expect’ is where a lot of people have had the football analysts blow smoke up their hoop for so long that they think it’s realistic to win every game. Seems that these folks need someone to blame if (when) reality doesn’t pan out that way. Must be a strange place to be.

The first half wasn't good. However, even then, it was a wrong pass by Maguire, a great strike by the Bilbao player, and an awful chip by Garnacho resulting us being behind in HT.

Taking a squad with a striker who can't control the ball and some major injuries (Licha) and for the latter part of the campaign Diallo, De Ligt, Dalot, Zrikzee plus perma unfit/injured players like Mount and Shaw, a bunch of young players as starters and subs, and a very questionable GK to the El final is a very positive development.

His job has been really hampered so far by our inbalanced squad and lack of fitness.
True, his saving grace is that he didn't sign the garbage we are now saddled with. However, next season, the PL shambles that 2nd part of the league campaign has turned out to be will count against him if there is no drastic improvement.

This is such tired old nonsense. If you have watched United for 40 years you'll know we've had one manager in that time who has won a league title. We went 27 years before him without one. That's how it goes, nobody dominates indefinitely. The period you watched was the most successful of any club, not just ours. It was a massive outlier.

We still want to win everything. It doesn't always pan out as expected. And as fallow periods go we're doing ok, we are still in the conversation for trophies. We've won as much in the last few years as we did in the whole of the 80s, and that was the team I fell in love with first.

Think most fans would be just happy with being able to win a PL game, or two on the bounce. Only the most delusional of fans are genuinely expecting us to win everything at this point.

Amorim on whether he will rest players until the final: "No, they will play because sometimes it's better to play. What I want to protect are the players who can get injured. We want to win and be competitive, including in the Premier League. Bruno [Fernandes] doesn't have an injury problem, but Harry [Maguire] does. So we have to manage that, but they have to play, and it's better to play."

Amorim: "When I talk about characteristics [that the team lacks], it's the players who play more inside than outside, those little things, even the foot. It's very important to have a left foot in the position Garna [Garnacho] played today, as a right-wing 10. That can change the way we play. Having wingers who are more attacking than defensive can change the way we play. Those are the kinds of things we'll try to do in the future, but it's going to take time. It won't happen in one summer. So I was talking about that and the weaknesses, you can see the match. We have so many problems, even to win this kind of match. You can see during the match that we have a lot of things to improve."

I’ve read all of these and I’ve seen two different views.

Yes Amorim has underperformed in the league, but the same frailties have existed under ETH.

We can’t pass through the 3rds, with pace and penetration causing us to recycle with our CBs.

I think with quality added in this system can and will work, I thought the biggest showing of what he wants with his Inverted RWB, was the pace and link up play between Dorgu & Amad, if we get Cunha who can link up with Dorgu on the left and a new RWB will add pace and quality pushing oppositions back.

We still need a CM who can dictate the tempo and fire it into the forwards, we will score far more, we all know out front 3 is poor.

We lack the physicality to deal with the PL, but I still feel this is the guy to take us forward, recruitment is paramount no matter who is in charge and we play 3 or 4 ATB.

Yeah well if they win the EL their salaries get a nice champions league bump.

We just don’t seem to ever target that kind of player. Eriksen probably the closest to it in recent years. It’s so annoying we never replaced Scholes and never won the league since.

So he talked about playing with a right 10 who is left footed so tends to move infield and at the same time he speaks about having more offensive options at wingback. Almost as if he wants two Amad on the pitch at the same time at right 10 and right wingback.
He could go for Cherki, Mastantauno or give Antony another chance.

And nothing in the media. Thats like a breath of fresh air. You know that 1 year ago there would be 5 exclusives and an in depth analysis of the monitor that got thrown out of a window, the pixels and hdmi cables. And the players’ feelings.

That's a good point tbf. He's either got rid of the misfits or he's got them pulling for each other and the club (or both). And tbf I'm sure the directors and whatnot must have something to do with that apparent shift too.

I think this is silly to just post about moaning. The flip flopping on here about Amorim is hilarious, its ETH all over again. One moment he's awful, wins the FA Cup and there's a massive clamor for him to stay. Much as I enjoyed the last 20 minutes, the fact is the first 70 minutes was one of the most inept displays I have ever seen from a United team, against a fairly average Bilbao missing several of their key players. People say don't talk about 7 defensive players, but directly as a result of that we had no outlets and were unable to progress the ball. At times it looked like we were playing with 10 players or less. Sure Dorgu got forward, but equally the limitations of the wing back system is they are often not real attackers, and he was in nose bleed territory whenever he got near the box. I don't see the fluidity in his system that others claim, sure better players will make us look better but equally better players will make any system look better.

I was really confident we would beat Spurs in final before the game, but after that shambolic period I just don't know. The formation still doesnt suit our squad and its not clear how many players we need to make it work or what an effective midfield would look like. There are still a lot of questions and sure we can enjoy the win and some nice goals, lets be sensible and acknowledge he still has a lot to prove.
We created two huge chances for Garnacho in the first half and their goal was a potshot from 30 yards that the goalkeeper should really have saved.

If that's what we're now calling "one of the most inept displays (you) have ever seen" then you must have a short, short memory - or have missed about 150 of our games post-SAF!

I would say it was a fairly typical performance. We did not give up many chances, the half chances we did give up came from individual errors and we created two big chances first half, but as usual, Garnacho missed them.

No surprise then, that when we bought on two good attacking players + Mainoo, we suddenly started creating and taking chances.

In short - it's not the system, it's our weak and wasteful attack + individual mistakes costing us currently

Well said. Recruitment has set us back years, so it’s unfair to judge Amorim without at least a proper summer window. How much time beyond the summer he gets, I don’t know. I’m hopeful though, we can’t keep being this pathetic in the League forever, right? Right?

7:1 aggregate vs 4th La Liga team.

Not too feckin shabby, Ruben.
They have the best defensive record in La Liga, too. 7 goals against them in two games and it could've been more. All whilst easing our joint best attacker back into the team in Amad.

I’m really enjoying the end of the season which is something I didn’t think possible just a few weeks ago. Let’s see what he can do with a few signings, a preseason and hopefully a European trophy to his name.

Looks like a bit of both.

Whilst a really small point - look at the love Casemiro gave Amorim when he was signed - and this was from a player who the manager dropped for months.

It's why cups are so important, most clubs are pretty much done by now. There's a couple trying to get into 5th spot but otherwise the league's relatively dead, relegation was known a while ago, as were realistic Champions. FA cup, Europa and/or CL (obviously the latter being vastly better) really ignite the end of season fan experience.

Interesting video explaining Utds wide diamonds and how the players are starting to understand what Amorim wants

That 20 minutes in the second half is the best we've played under him since he has been manager, can we start games in that manner and maintain it I hope so we'll see though.

If he plays 7 defensive players starting against Spurs they will win that game, he needs to be braver in the final than the start of this game.

Just won 7-1 to get to a European final yet you’re still posting miserable jibes at the manager. Great support.
I didn't say I hate him. I just said it's very easy to not fall into some charisma hole with him and fall in love like a lot have. How's that being miserable? Because I'm not in love with him?

Which will happen when the manager implements new tactics that lead to you getting overrun every game, losing lots of games and then struggling. Said manager surprisingly doesn't lose his job, continues the pattern the next season, inevitably gets sacked 4 months too late. Then his replacement implements completely different formation/tactics and you continue to struggle. It's been a vicious cycle in confidence terms that wont' be easily fixed, it'll take a while for a lot of these players players to get their confidence in themselves and each other back.
Agreed

We need a sharp uptick in league results next season regardless of what happens in the final.

It's not like winning the Europa should buy him a season where we can finish 14th-16th again.
Exactly. Good achievement by Amorim to get us to the final. I'm glad about that from him. The rest has been so terrible that he has to hit the mark quickly last season. It's been that bad that winning the Europa doesn't wash out the rest but still would be great for him and the club to win it.

And nothing in the media. Thats like a breath of fresh air. You know that 1 year ago there would be 5 exclusives and an in depth analysis of the monitor that got thrown out of a window, the pixels and hdmi cables. And the players’ feelings.
That's because we won the game. If we lost then staff would have shared what happened.

Lets win the Europa league - both him and the club need it. We can't be going into next season with low morale again - winning the EL and getting CL qualification through it, gives us at least a glimmer of hope.

We might find out he's not the one next season, but feck me we need something to hang onto going into next season.I want to at least be excited for the first game of the season.

Delude myself over the summer that we might be turning things around.

And that's me of all posters on here who's saying that.

Largely agree but we did struggle to get the ball out of our own third as we tend to in general. Last night I felt it was even worse than usual. Not sure I'd class that as individual mistakes either. It's just what we do.

Can't do that against Spurs.

No I think recruitment is everything, look at that Klopp team he started with and won the league, it’s night and day, as good as a coach as you are your not winning the league with that team.

I have to have faith otherwise what’s the point.
