Even if somehow we manage to win the Europa League, I still think we should move on. It might sound harsh, but we can’t get blinded by a trophy and ignore the bigger picture.
His system needs a very specific set of players—wing-backs, ball-playing CBs, a deep-lying playmaker, etc.—and we just don’t have the squad nor the funds to bring enough players for that.
Even if somehow we can get the money giving him the funds to build his ideal team would be a massive risk, especially when the results and performances since he came in haven’t exactly screamed “this is the guy.” If anything, we’ve looked just as or more disjointed than before, only now we’re trying to force players into roles they clearly don’t suit.
It’d actually be better for Amorim too. He leaves on a high with a European trophy, and he’s got the perfect out: came in halfway through a mess, not his squad, still delivered silverware. His rep stays fairly intact. If we keep him and things go sideways next season, that narrative disappears and he just becomes another name on our long list of failed rebuilds.
Feels like we’ve been here before with ten Hag.
It’s depressing to be in this position because I genuinely like Amorim, but the results have gone beyond anything acceptable. The club feels rotten to the core, and I don’t see how it can be repaired without a complete overhaul starting with the ownership, the culture, and the people running it.
This isn’t a one-man job. No manager can fix this on their own, not when the problems run this deep. And as grim as it sounds, I think relegation is a real possibility in the next few seasons. We’re not just stagnating we’re getting worse.
