Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

Make or break season for Amorim, that said, the club have to back him to the hilt one way or another and get him the players he needs, finishing 15th last season was completely unacceptable and an embarrassment, it simply cannot happen again.

Plenty have and 2 posts after you has also. He will be a problem, anyone thinking he won't be is burying their head in the sand.
He's a huge problem and will continue to be a problem, but I also think the GK position is one of the easier problems to solve. Decent, affordable, reliable GKs are a dime a dozen in football. Get a cheap-ish stop gap to take over as number 1 for the next 1-2 seasons and then reassess in a future transfer window when our financial position improves.

So the whole idea of us stopping doing that and ending up with "shit" squads is out of the window again? Shaping the squad to yet another manager who is unproven himself, what could possibly go wrong.
That sums up our coming season.
It looks like we are going to be writing off yet another season and if things do go wrong, we will need another manager in 12 months.
Writing off season after season after season is how things are now.

So tied of these strawmen arguments. Nobody is saying that at all. Modern clubs need structures that enable good decisions to be taken - that is not passing the buck.

Of course Amorim is accountable. But you have to give people a fair crack before you judge them. He was hired to do a squad rebuild, so before we judge him, let's see what progress he can make with several better players.
How about we give him 42 games, the last one of which is a cup final that, should he win, will see us playing in the CL next term whilst getting an influx of cash?

Easy peasy. Let's see how he does!

If the manager sets the rest of the team up correctly the goalkeeper wont be a problem, unfortunately after what we have seen over the last 7 months I have zero confidence in the managers ability to do that
...until we have a goal kick, or they have a corner kick, or we pass the ball to Onana and expect him to make a good pass with it. Unfortunately Onana is involved with a lot of "build up" play, even if that results in him kicking the ball into touch. His actual shot-stopping is shite. His passing ability gets us into trouble more often than not. The entire team could be set up well and playing "correctly" and the minute Onana is involved, it's a roll of the dice which Onana turns up: the one who got to a CL final or the one with reflexes of a sloth.

It wasnt anywhere near that, there were multiple factors like Rashford getting himself stupidly sent off and costing the game away in Copenhagen
the careful reader will note that "99%" is used as hyperbole.

hyperbole /hī-pûr′bə-lē/

noun

  1. A figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect, as in I could sleep for a year or This book weighs a ton.
  2. A figure of speech in which the expression is an evident exaggeration of the meaning intended to be conveyed, or by which things are represented as much greater or less, better or worse, than they really are; a statement exaggerated fancifully, through excitement, or for effect.
  3. Extreme exaggeration or overstatement; especially as a literary or rhetorical device.

Of course you sign players who suit the managers style of play, be pretty fecking stupid not to, thats's where you would end up with a "Shit" squad, as we have for the last 12 years.

Why would INEOS bring in Amorim if they are not going to back him with his vision, may as well have brought in someone else.

Maybe wait until the window is over before posting such reactionary posts, we are at the start of July, we have nearly 2 months remaining and not exactly a que of clubs trying to buy our players, so it will take time to see what will happen.
How is that a "reactionary" post, it wasn't even related to what you're saying.

Ten Hag is the best example of what could possibly go wrong with this idea of "backing a manager with his vision".

The alternative isn't to sign random players that manager won't be using, nobody is saying that. It's just this idea that a manager can't be judged until he has his own players is really silly and is a great recipe for ending up with yet another "shit" squad.

So, what would you do this summer window? Not buy players? Buy players that doesn't suit the managers style?

Let me guess.. sack the manager?
I'd do the opposite to what you want, we'd be challenging for CL places then. Hope this helps.

Our chance create was around 12th in the league. A bit of that is on Garnacho, a bit on Hojlund and a massive part on a system that clearly isn't working
A system doesn’t make players blaze it over the bar from 30 yards, ignore passing to there teammates in better positions or fighting CBs never winning and not being an outlet.

Maybe we can’t score goals because our attack is sh1t and our highest paid attackers played for other teams.

Precisely, that's all I was asking. Cause absolving a manager of all responsibilities just because he hasn't gotten a brand new team is exactly the road we went down with ETH also. Hopefully we can boost his chances of success with a few more signings but wouldn't at all he surprised if they feck it up.
There can be two sides, Amorim hasn’t performed well enough and also this team is not fit for purpose, with some new signings of quality we will be able to find out what he is truly about.

ETH signing player he had either coached or played against Ajax, is in no way similar to signing players who suit Amorims philosophy, that is what recruitment is there to do.

I never said Amorim cannot be judged, he has clearly performed poorly but this team is also not fit for purpose.

So what would you like? Us to not sign players and plan for the next manager while Amorim is in the role?

While he is here we need to back him with players that suit his style, but players who also can adapt to multiple styles of football.

If the manager sets the rest of the team up correctly the goalkeeper wont be a problem
What?

Every goalkeeper needs to save shots that are saveable, no matter the team they're in. Our goalkeeper has dreadful instincts, reaction times and technique. We are not a serious team as long as our goalkeeper is conceding soft goals and dropping howlers, which he does more than any other keeper in the league.

No set up is going to stop the opposition from exploiting that our keeper can't do the bare minimum basics of being a goalkeeper.

Yep no difference between Schmeichel and Taibi, Barthez, Bosnich. They all played under SAF after all

I genuinely think we might be worse this year. Unless I see a new keeper/central defender/central midfielder and striker it's just gonna be the same oul rubbish. And I think Ruben was awful this year.

I genuinely hope I'm proved wrong, I do think Mbuemo signing could be big. But Onana can't play. If he starts, I've no hope.
I, unfortunately, feel very much the same.

Transfer business is never easy, so I still hope the club know what they are doing (benefit of the doubt). My optimism that we are on the verge of a massive window is running out. We are back into pre season with one player from a team who finished two points below us albeit with 10 more goals.

He couldn’t single-handedly save Wolves and he can’t do it with just Bruno in attack here.

They’ve talked the talk Inoes et al. Omar taking 2028 etc… let’s see it in action.

Rueben might be fed to the wolves if this is all he’s got to work with.

It's a bit mad that you still seem intent on defending Onana.

Wish he could change the formation to 433 as we still dont have the right set of players for 3-4-3
No proper wing backs, No progressive quick defenders and No strong athletic Central midfielders.

It has been relegation form since he took over. The squad was thread bare since January so some additional fire power would be welcome. I cannot see a major improvement with this formation. Maybe enough to stay at the bottom half without getting into a relegation fight.

Preseason starts on Monday and we have just one new signing and no new striker in sight. This is not Amorim's fault but it will make it more difficult for us to prepare for next season.

I think Mbuemo will be signed before the tour, but a new striker will be signed very late in the window.

As long as we do sign a striker at all. Still relatively early but I'm starting to worry.

The biggest problem we had during the season was finding the time for players to drill and master the play style without the distractions of games.

We are targetting proven PL talent so we can come out of the gates fast in August. God knows we need to given the first 10 fixtures.

We have thrown him under the bus not either completing Mbeumo or going for our 2nd choice (there must be one). There are around two weeks of training before our first match, after which it becomes travel and press commitments and it's more tweaking the system.

It's a bit mad that you still seem intent on defending Onana.
It’s mad Emi Martinez was seen as the replacement, who was no better stat wise and prone to mistakes last season.

Onana looks better in a team that can build up, his long passing isn’t great.

We can upgrade on him, but it’s hardly s priority.

If Utd go into the new season and the window has closed with no new striker it wouldn't be too much of a surprise if he offers his resignation if things are not going well on the pitch, the club has to give him everything he needs in order to remotely start climbing back to some sort of respectability.

This formation let Conte take the PL by storm.

Amorim let Rashford go out, Sancho was already out, he let out Anthony. Garnacho, and Hojilund could not handle the pressure and Amad was on and off injured. Zirkzee was poor the majority of times.

Give him the players and we’ll flourish.
Anyone think we wouldn’t do well if we had Mbeumo, Cunha and either Gyorkeres or Oshimen?

Amorim is going to be shown the door pretty quickly if this is all the transfer business United are doing.

We’ll be fighting relegation if this is all we do. One or two inevitable injuries to key players and we’ll be in trouble. There’s simply not enough goals in this team, and we’ll have less options as Garnacho will be gone.

Thankfully there’s no way the club goes into next season like this. Amorim would probably walk if that’s what we tried.

When something doesn’t work, you make changes.

There are no guarantees. The club signing some players with quality hopefully will lift our performances.

Onana is an awful goalkeeper in a team that can build up or not. He remains a terrible keeper. Martinez had a poor season but he's clearly a better keeper and it's a bit mad that this is even in doubt.

Was he terrible for Ajax and Inter? Nope, man of the match for me in a CL final.

So you want to replace him someone who was poor last season as well? That’s real hopeful.

Feel really bad for Amorim. His first pre-season is about to start in 2 days and the club has bought a grand total of 2 players (one of them being Diego Leon) and haven’t been able to even offload one player. The club management still seem to be as sluggish as they were back in Woodward’s time.

disagree, most keepers are poor now, Liverpool have actually signed another decent one, the decent one's aren't leaving PSG, Barca, Real etc to come to us

He's been fecking awful for us, I don't care what he did at Ajax. Antony and Ten Hag were good there as well. Bad keeper makes the whole defence shaky, replacing him should be high on the list of priorities.

If only he had any influence over how much money we have available

He could have beaten a poor Spurs side, but that was too much for him.
Completely sht the bed in our biggest game in 4 years. Starting XI, tactics, subs all gotten horribly wrong. We won't see such an inept display in a final for quite some time. From the 46th minute it was clear that Spurs would waste time and sit back yet Amorim just froze and changed nothing until the 71st minute. We have to remember that this is a very inexperienced manager and that was his first European final as well. I have no faith in him being successful here, he's been proven to be out of his depth so far.

Many of us pointed out last season that it's extremely unlikely given our record in the transfer market and our financial constraints that there will be a massive squad overhaul, and that Amorim as a result will have to adapt and make do with what he's got, whether he or we like it or not.

For some reason, this realist view has been extremely controversial here.

Yup, very poor from Amorim but as expected based on our season.

He was always going to fail anyways, but yet another lackluster summer window is setting him up to fail sooner rather than later.

Even assuming we get the Mbeumo deal done, we still need a striker, a midfielder, and a keeper before the season starts.

If Amorim is still around come January I'll be shocked.

I hope they manage to have an outstanding month of outgoings and careful planning of incomings over the next month. But if Rashford and Sancho are not sorted and Onana is #1, he's going to struggle.
