RW Options

Amazingly this is still a problem position, like many I thought Sancho would be the answer but there were lots of posters who were adamant that he'd end up on the left as he's better there and so it has come to pass, there's no denying Jadon is on another level at LW, so that leaves us still needing to address the position as Greenwood will be transferred to Strangeways FC which Elanga currently our best and only real option.

So who are the best options on the market? If your only answer is Sancho then this isn't the thread for you. :) I think a left footer is the way to go (sorry chalk on the boots lovers) and we've been linked tenuously with Antony from Ajax, is he ready for the step up? I also think Raphina could end up being a Jota like signing for us and Leeds could be vulnerable for a transfer this summer even if they manage to stay up.

Antony is outrageous, here's hoping but an alternative is Beradi with 10 goals, 13 assists so far this league campaign. This guy is extremely talented. The unorthadox alternative for me is Nkunku.

Berardi? He'll be 28 by the start of next season.

Sancho, while he is arguably better on the left that's not where the team needs him right now. We are playing Rashford, Elanga and even Lingard on the right, 3 players who have operated off the left for most of their careers to accommodate Sancho on the left who has played most of his senior career on the right.

Sort it out Ralf.

Raphina would surely be a decent option for us.
Wouldn't cost the world either, especially if Leeds get relegated.

I think Tete at Shakhtar Donetsk is worth a look. 22 year old left footed RW. 10 goals and 2 assists in 28 appearances this season. 31 goals and 15 assists in 108 appearances overall so a 1 goal in around 3 game sort of player.

Obviously the situation in Ukraine will affect the players. Feels a bit scummy to suggest him but he will probably be available and for a reasonable fee.

Elanga has looked more confident running with the ball from the right, and I'm talking about in the summer for the long term, not the next dozen or so games.

Berardi has always looked a real talent but very temperamental which is why I'm guessing Juve haven't hoovered him up. Nkunku is class but most avid Bundesliga watchers seem to feel he's best in Bruno's position.

We need someone quick, willing to press, who actually plays as a specialist right winger. I don’t want any of these ‘can do a job there’ type players. Let’s get some actual specialists.

Antony and Raphinha are probably the best left footed right wingers that are actually available. Those two fit the bill best.

Noni Madueke from PSV is another great talent. Had most of the season taken with major injury but he’s come back like he never left

Dembele will probably be on our radar as a free signing. Maybe the change of scenery will do him well, in the Adama/Auba sense for Barcelona? I wouldn’t count on it though.

Bukayo Saka is my ultimate pipeline would never happen dream. He’s like Sancho with more pace and physicality who can comfortably operate on the right side, with about 3/4ths of the creativity.

Sancho has played most of his career on the left.

Coming through the youth teams, he operated on the left. He played mostly from the right in his first season at Dortmund while he was new to the team, then established himself as a left winger and one of their best players thereafter. It is abundantly clear which side he excels on.

He's also a shining light for us just now - it makes no sense to shackle him by moving him to his weaker side at the moment. Elanga has looked fine off the right, Lingard barely plays and has probably played from the right more than the left in his senior career and Rashford's issue's surely go beyond the position he is deployed in - the man can't/ won't run!

To be fair mate I did say his senior career.

I personally think he can be just as effective playing on the right, he would certainly give us a good crossing option playing from there because feck knows Dalot and AWB aren't providing it.

Fair enough mate I'm not averse to us bringing another top winger in and using Sancho on the left then. But for this season I think we need him on the right and it's a strange choice from Rangnick that he rarely uses him there.

I think I'm just pissed off with the fact we keep buying players capable of playing to a high level on the right like DiMaria, Mkhitaryan, Sanchez and Sancho but then barely playing them there. As you say RW has been a problem for almost a decade and one of the main reasons for that is almost every winger/wide player we sign gets moved to the left.

If were out of options I'd play dalot at rw over rashford.

I honestly don't see how anyone can think he can be nearly as effective on the right.

Also, Di Maria and Alexis Sanchez were, similarly, not right wingers, hence being moved away from that area. Both, as well as Sancho, were played out of position on the right earlier in their career. Basically in the same way Rashford has been.

Antony would be the one for me. Hakim Ziyech wasn't really a winger but a right sided central player like how Mata has been utilised in the past.

Antony's ability to unhinge defensive lines and open up space via his dribbling, speed and flair is quite a joy to witness. He's a player that may not get a goal or assist in a game, but his impact is telling imo.

I think he has it in him to take the step to become a regular goalscorer. He would certainly be my first choice.

Agreed. He's only 21 years old but his ability to run at opponents and hence open up space for others due to his skill, speed and flair are attributes that would mesh well in a team that wants to implement a high intensity game style. The goals and assists will come.

No question or hesitation Raphinha, if we are ignoring his talent, his work ethic and how team orientated he is sets him apart from Antony.

I think Antony from Ajax would be quality for us…. Bring ten Haag as manager and then bring Antony with him. My second choice would be raphinha, surely he’s due to move to a bigger club by now. Another player we should be looking at is Pedro goncalves from sporting… watched him a few times and he looks decent, not sure what sided he his though but he scores and assists quite a few.

I think someone that could do a bit of playmaking from the right would be good. Something like Odegaard. Preferably a clever two-footed player that can pick the right passes in tight spaces. We need to combine better down our right but we also need to be able to use quick transitions on that side too. AWB can pass and run but we need a player next to him that is a quick thinker and a step ahead. Lindelof also is never a step ahead, always waving his arms around wondering what to do.

Strange. He's about as team oriented as Bruno Fernandes - i.e. a bit of a gun slinger

What a player… after the Euro’s I’ve been sold on him. But with our current dynamic we need someone more explosive to combine with Sancho.

He’d be too similar.

Hakim Ziyech was alot better than Antony at Ajax.
Ziyech looked good in a much better team. Meanwhile Antony is just coming on at the age of 22 and has looked better the past year or so than Ziyech ever has. He is an absolute menace down the right and will be a big time player at a big club unlike Ziyech.

Are you thinking of Chiesa? He was the star winger for Italy at the the Euros.

We really need someone who actually wants to play on the RW and it’s their best position. Seems so obvious but we just try to shoehorn anyone and everyone like. It’s every bit as important we get a RW as it is a striker and couple of midfielders.

I like Raphina but price would be ridiculous unless Leeds go down and there are plenty of other good options out there for less money. Would like to see us go for Antony, especially if Ten Haag joins us as well.

The pre requisite of this is a top class left footed player comfortable cutting inside and down the right channel. The days of a right winger hugging the touch line has gone out with the arc.

I wasn’t watching who put the ball in the back of the net I was watching the game play. He came on against Spain and I thought he was Spanish. Just techy.

But think about what you just said and thinking about what type of player I was requesting. It just doesn’t add up.

Has he really though? Maybe I was wrong about him playing mostly on the right I haven't checked but I'd imagine it's a pretty even split between right/left.

As for the second part I rate Sancho very highly, that's why.

Despite me actually saying they were capable of playing there. Both have played large parts of their careers there, my point was while they were at the club they were better options on the right than the likes of Lingard and Mata who were shoved out there to fill a gap, much like Sancho and Rashford now.
