When someone garners the attention this kid is getting, it certainly does beg for a thorough examination of him as a player. I'm just curious because I've watched nothing more of him than a few youtube videos and they only highlight his goals, really, which is the least interesting thing (as they are a given - the kid scores goals) as you then want to know how he handles himself, his potential for growth and his understanding of the game.

I was going to ask a lot of full-back related questions, but sounds like he's got little in common with the position - if we're talking attacking talent, then he's got a lot to live up to when there's so many potentially great youngsters coming through in those positions. Would you rate him along the lines of a Coman, Dembele or the myriad of wing-forwards making their name having broken through and gone on to top clubs?

You mentioned Bale, but a young Bale was a ridiculous athlete with a very refined left foot (crossing, free kicks, shooting) is it just Sessegnon's shooting you'd compare in terms of technique with his connections to the ball?

I just wonder if this kid is English-level good or whether he's a world-scale young talent. I know next to nothing of his hype train, so I'm trying to create a point of reference from this thread.
He's the most developed player out of the best international youth team in the world currently, the England 2000 group who are world champions. He was considered too advanced to be playing in that age group but won the U19 Euros with England last summer instead and made team of the tournament. He is arguably the best 17 year old player in the world currently.

He's played 19 games for Fulham this season as a left back but has 13 goals and assists in 13 games as an attacking left player. Since they moved him up the pitch they have been on a great run which has seen them challenging for automatic promotion after being mid table.

The comparisons with Bale more come from him being a good left back who will likely end up as a left attacking player. He isn't quite as athletic as Bale at the moment, he is too small although his manager praised his engine and work rate.

Currently I would rank him among the like of Dembele and Coman in terms of potential, not sure how you couldn't. He is supposed to be a great professional and level person too so I can't see why he shouldn't fulfill his potential.

He isn't the most gifted player technically. Foden, Sancho and Hudson Odoi are far more likely to bring the house down with amazing skill or technique but that doesn't mean Sessegnon won't be a top player.

Thanks for this ^^. Gives me a better understanding of the player. I'm going to have to remember to watch Fulham next time they're on TV!

Just heard an interview on sky sports. Seems very mature and level headed for 17 years old.

Understand he plays left back and left wing, but he obviously prefers to play higher up as a left winger.

We've been linked with him, but one thing we don't need is another left winger, and I think we'd be wasting him at left back.

Nevertheless, from what I've heard, he seems to be a young English player, with bags of potential, which can only be positive for the national team.

Hope he goes on to have a fantastic career.

Most obvious PL level talent playing at a lower level since Bale/ Alli/ Dembele, and we all know where they went. Nailed on for Spurs in my opinion. Hope we get him, but can't see it just yet.

10 in 12 now.

It's so annoying knowing that Mourinho won't sign him because of his age. He's going to be an amazing player.

Yeah because we need another LW.
If the player is good enough, you sign him and fit him in. If they signed him and loaned him out to a newly promoted team for a season, a position in our squad would open up for him

Not really. It's the reason we're in a bit of a mess now, in terms of forcing players into the team just because of their name and losing balance, i.e. Spurs and Newcastle.

Play the team that gives us the best balance, not the best players.

Ironic that his idol is Shaw, a player with not a single goal in 100 + games yet Sessègnon has a marginally better than one in three strike rate after 60 odd games !

The jury is well and truly out whether either of these two will be proper first team quality players for a club that is looking to hallebge on all fronts.

He’s only 17 and things change in football. In 2-3 years there could be a spot in the first 11 for him.

Not buying a 17 year old with such huge potential because there are currently players in his position is massively short sighted on Mourinho and the clubs part.

Buy and loan out wouldn't be the worst. A proper left winger like a Sane wouldn't go amiss at all IMO, though that's long term. But good option to have off the bench and to rotate. Sanchez and Martial are both similar in that they like cutting in all the time, so does Rashford but he's more a back up striker. Plus he can rotate with Left back and do what Young does but as a proper left sided player.

When Martial and Rashford dont play, it will be Mourinho's fault for them not progressing. If Sessengnon doesn’t play enough, it will be Mourinho’s fault for him not progressing. Never mind the fact we already have Sanchez.

Besides he is playing in the Championship.

Can't we play him like Madrid plays Marcelo in the left back position? We play with left forwards rather than traditional left wingers, so it should be fine in theory?

It doesn't matter where he plays, if our scouting team believes him to be the next big young talent, we should go in for him. He can already play left wingback and left winger, I'm sure he can adapt to right wing as well.

Just watching him now against Brentford.

Playing well up the field as an attacking LM just in case people are thinking he's a LB

Getting him and loaning back to Fulham would be nice, otherwise I don't see the point, don't think he is going to be a LB, and he won't get in ahead of Sanchez at LW

He's done well for a 17 year old, but how on earth does he get nominated for YPOTY? Surely there are 6 better young players than him in the Championship, let alone the Prem. I know he's just 17, but that shouldn't come into to it surely, other than meaning he qualifies for the award. Isn't it meant to reflect the best player below 24 (or whatever the cut off age is). He's not played even close to the levels of the likes of Jota and Neves at Wolves. Ryan Madison has been on a different level to Sessegnon. I understand why Prem clubs are chasing Sess, as he's done what he's done at such a young age, but the award is surely about who are the best young players in the country this season and Ryan Sessegnon isn't even remotely close to that.

He's on the shortlist. Doesn't mean he'll win it.

It's pity he can't play RW, seems to have loads of potential.
He's only 17 so could easily be moulded as a right winger long term. With inverted wingers being the vogue right now, will probably end up there for his next club.

It would make sense to buy and loan back especially if Fulham get into the Prem as hes already settled there and will stay in the first XI most likely as he has been a standout performer for them. Wouldn't be like some our previous loans where talented young players should start but never do.

He could provide good depth in both LB/LM especially if the likes of Darmian/Blind leave and Young at the end of 18/19. Sanchez is 29 as well, so can't see him being here for more than 3 years.

Why? Have we not learnt you can't shoehorn. Who plays there now for us and is he a right winger?

Who am I shoehorning? I just said I reckon Sessegnon's main position could end up as a right winger for whichever club he is at next.

And yeah you can shoehorn, loads of players have changed position successfully from when they were 17.

I see the similarity to Bale in the way he strikes the ball with his left foot when shooting, fantastic technique.

The only similarity with Sane I saw on Saturday was the position they play and how he linked into some slick interplay on the left hand side, similarly to the way City play. He put in a couple of nice crosses too, something which Sane is probably underrated on.

If people are expecting a player as explosive or as fast as Bale and Sane then I think they will be disappointed as he is neither as fast or explosive as either of them.

Sign him up. Although his price tag has probably gone up to 50m since January.
