Most of the older posters probably are aware of my unhealthy obsession with the great man. Simply the greatest sportsman I've had the privilege of watching/secretly stalking.

Anyway, so he's 37. And is averaging over 90 in tests this year. And became the first batsman to score 200 in a limited over game not too long back. Things like this aren't supposed to happen, are they?
 
I have one gripe about Sachin. Why does he play every T20 match for Mumbai, when he rests from ODIs for India? It's clear that everyone wants Sachin to prolong his career.. every time India has wrapped up a series, he's been rested for the dead rubbers. Every time an ODI series feels insignificant(on the back of a test series or against NZ etc), Sachin is rested. But then he turns up for Mumbai and plays every pointless T20 match.

Sachin along with Dravid are my favourite players.. and he's a remarkably modest person, without even considering his achievements.. but it grates on me that he does this.

Because he believes test cricket is what matters like most players do. So that takes precedence. He likes to play for Mumbai because it's something fresh and new (T20) and it's just 20 overs so doesn't take that much of a toll. And for a man of his age, who started at 16 (!) it's all about a challenge. Test cricket is ALWAYS a challenge, and T20 presents a new challenge to him.

Besides, the guy is a living legend and 37. He can do whatever he wants to do. We should just be grateful that he's still playing cricket. When it ends it's all downhill.

You misunderstood me. I am all for wrapping Sachin up in cotton wool to prolong his test career, but if he's going to rest from playing for India, I don't think he should be playing for Mumbai.

T20 is just 20 overs, but he played an entire IPL season this time around. 16 matches in all, and you have to factor in the amount of travelling the players do all over India. Not a single team plays more than 2 games back to back at home. Very little time to recuperate from matches.

T20 is a new challenge, sure, but it's not really proper cricket. IMO, playing for India should take priority over playing for any player's local franchise.

It's not really about that for him anymore. If he isn't feeling the 'zing' :) in him when playing One Day cricket, then what's the point. It's all about the challenge now for him. There's no point in him half heartedly turning up for something which doesn't excite him. He's earned this right.

I suspect he secretly enjoys the shortest form of the sport. Also he made a commitment to Ambani and he's not the sort to renege on one of those. Third point, money. Ujala Techno Bright can't be covering his declining endorsements can it.

There's been enough said about him to print across the globe a couple of time, I would imagine. He made me put the tv off that day when he got out on 98.

Massive respects for Tendulkar.

The 1st time I ever saw him live was when India toured Australia in 2003. India drew that series in Australia.

It was an exceptional series, and Tendulkar was in really bad form heading into the Sydney Test. I remember around 20 of us bought tickets on a whim and decided we'd go watch. Only to watch Tendulkar score 241 not out. It was the strangest feeling in the world, sure there were loads of people from the subcontinent watching, but it was like all of the SCG wanted him to hit form. Every milestone he crossed the ovations became more and more heartleft, and the applause more profuse.

I remember when he reached his double ton, the crowd going bonkers, no one would have batted an eyelid if you told them, this was India, not Australia.

Tendulkar, bar the captaincy debacle, and ball tampering incident in South Africa(very badly handled by the BCCI I think, the 2nd/3rd test not being a test), was untouchable as a cricketer and person.
 
Well he never tampered with the ball so the BCCI did the right thing IMO. Denness was a racist twat.

And that 241 was one of the worst doubles I've seen.

Here, here. A part of me will crack when he decides to retire. I can't quite explain how he's affected my days growing up. The man is a true giant of the game. I'd be surprised if I ever get to see another like him.

To have started out at 16, still be going on, and still out performing the others is remarkable. It would be so apt if he wins the world cup next year. But with every passing series you do wonder whether his ability is going to desert him.

That was the thing, somehow this Goliath of cricket, had become the underdog, he was so shit that tour, I think heading into the Sydney test, he might have had a series average in the teens.

He put away a lot of his shots, and grafted that massive score, it was the complete opposite of everything people had come to expect from him, and that made it amazing. Just this old timer(simply because of how early he started, and the amount of cricket he had played already at the age of 30-31), who looked like he was done, form gone, starting to decline, and what looked like one last hurrah....

Of course, 6 years later, he's still going strong.

Awesome. I could say things but then I'd be seen as (an even more of) a retard. Crappy is another one like us but he isn't on the cafe much these days.

Sehwag has got a 300, but he'll be a tier below always for me. Fine player though.
 
One of the greatest batsman of all time, if not the greatest, always a pleasure to watch him bat and one of the nicest guys in cricket. Great player.

do you remember the match against australia in sharjah when sachin smashed 140 odd runs and the umpire unfairly gave him out. i think fleming was the bowler...i nearly threw the tv out of the window in disgust :lol:

How could I forget. What games those were. He was like a man possessed. Brilliant century in the semi and the final. I remember that decision. There was this one shot off Tom Moody, that was just unreal. Straight over the bowlers head for a massive six. Moody just looked baffled. Tony Greg was having an orgasm in the commentary box those two games.
 
On the subject of Sachin, what are your favorite innings of the guy.

Test- That century in Chennai against Pakistan, really made my cry although i was 9 at that time and that 155 against South Africa in Bloemfontein. Also 4th Innings Century against England in Chennai

ODI- Sharjah Innings, 90 odd against Pakistan in WC 2003, 175 against Australia, Double Century against South Africa.

Amen to that brother. Have done some stupid things to watch both India (Sachin) and United (much later on in life) as well. :lol:
 
The upper cut of Akhtar in the 2003 world cup. He murdered them that day. What an occasion to do it. And what an attack to do it to.
 
You also got to remember that he's getting a shit ton to play IPL. And the IPL itself is needed to be successful for the sport to continue booming, so of course one of the biggest ambassadors for the sport is going to do all he can for that form of the game, theres not exactly much he can do by playing one days anymore, the future is tests and 20/20.

I was there in South Africa for the WC.

Akhtar was the fastest bowler in the world at the time. Sachin treated his bowling as he was a school kid.

When Sachin Tendulkar travelled to Pakistan to face one of the finest pace attacks (Imran, Akram and Waqar) assembled in cricket, Michael Schumacher was yet to race a F1 car, Lance Armstrong had never been to the Tour de France, Pete Sampras had never won a Grand Slam and Roger Federer was a name unheard of.
 
I think we've been very lucky over the past 15 years to witness the rise of 3 truly great batsman. Its a pity as an Australian that we have the biggest cnut of them all, as Lara and Tendulka are truly gentleman of the game.

Tendulka is in the Bradman and Warne zone of cricketers. The very best that we will ever see.

Wow. I'm about his age and can't believe he's still going this strong. Btw, Is this the series with the Sialkot test where he was peppered with the short stuff? The boyish fella on a lush green pitch with curly pads and white helmet?

Lucky lucky!

It was just surreal. It was billed as their big face off, and Sachin was swatting him around as if he was throwing tennis balls at him.

Then obviously, the way he played Warne will be the stuff of legends. So much hype over the two great players head to head against each other. Before the series Sachin said that he'd been practicing so cope with it. Boy, did he cope with it. He made Warne look like some random Ranji trophy leg spinner. It was special the way he played Warne. He didn't just play him well, he toyed with him, and gave him a nice tonking whenever he felt like it.

One of the all time great's Sachin is...but he was Allan Donald's bitch...true story. Donald was his arch nemesis, his kryptonite. Tendulkar struggled to get big scores vs SA because of 'Wit Blitz'
